11:43<ro>Hey,is debian safe for online payments
11:44<danopa>ro: safe as any other distro
11:47<ro>Should i use debian or its forked version for good experience?forked version like mx linux, etc.
11:48<danopa>ro: for what good experience?
11:49-!-L0rD` [~L0rD`@0001f895.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
11:49-!-L0rD` is "anon" on #tor-project #tor-dev #tor-de #otr #linux.de #https-everywhere #debian #cryptodotis
11:49<ro>like overall ,good performance ,less bugs, more privacy, almost included with free softwares only, doesn,t get hard on the hardware etc..
11:50<mnuhmnuh>ro: _the point_ of debian from day one was debian stable. everything else debian boils down to focus on stable.
11:50<danopa>ro: debian probably the most stable of all distros, and very secure. this channel will alwasy recommend debian, oddly enough
11:51<petn-randall>ro: I'd stick with Debian, it's the only distro you'd get support for in here. If you want to use another distro for whatever reason, that's fine, but the Debian forks usually have much smaller communities and thus less people to ask for help.
11:52<ro>I love the XFCE DE alot but the Debian XFCE is troubling alot with the configuration like no support for touchpad and the panels and sessions doesn't saves but the story is different with Debian Gnome it works completely .any solutions
11:52<mnuhmnuh>ro: i run stable, but have tails and slackware on bootable usbkeys, and play with them regularly.
11:53<petn-randall>ro: I'm looking at the touchpad config menu in Xfce right now, I don't know what you're talking about.
11:53<petn-randall>It's called "Mouse and Touchpad".
11:54<ro>no tap to click option there i had to configure the config files myself and its troubling
11:54<ro>my laptops left click is damage
11:55<petn-randall>I'd hardly call that "no support for touchpad", though.
11:55<petn-randall>It's more along the lines of "Debian does not offer a workaround in the menu for my broken touchpad".
11:55<mnuhmnuh>ro damaged hardware means you're lucky with what it managed to give you.
11:56<arto>ro: I'm just now using XFCE on a notebook, no such problems ever
11:56<ro>and another thing is the changes are not saved when i logout the session and gives xfce-panel error always on the xfce debian.any solution ??is it happening to me only or what?
11:57<arto>ro: that also is ver foreign for me
11:57<ro>arto:are u using tap to click?or anything else?
11:58<arto>ro: touchpad, luckily there are buttons too
11:58<petn-randall>ro: Settings → Session and Startup → General → Automatically save session on logout
11:58<petn-randall>Does that not work for you?
11:58<ro>i did that but still the panel crash !!
11:59<petn-randall>ro: How does it crash? Do you get any error?
11:59<ro>ibus + or something panel error
11:59<arto>ro: what debian version?
11:59<ro>Debian Stable 9.5 XFCE
12:00<petn-randall>ro: Did you install any packages from other repos?
12:00<arto>ro: what is the model of your laptop?
12:00<ro>no i got the error in my first boot and i tried to sort out the problem but was very tough and switched to gnome but i want to use xfce
12:01<ro>DELL INSPIRON 3421 i3-3227U variant
12:01<petn-randall>ro: If you can give us the exact error we might be able to help.
12:03<ro>No running instance of xfce4-panel was found” yes this error everytime i boot
12:03<ro>asks for execute everytime and gives the worning
12:04<petn-randall>ro: Is that the *exact* and complete error you get?

21:32<bremner>iirc, priority standard?
21:33*grummund probably means 'essential', how do you interrogate for that?
21:35<grummund>never mind...
21:35<grummund>apt-cache show coreutils | grep -i essential
21:35-!-localhorst [nekobus@0002307f.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:37<bremner>well, essential is stronger than what you asked, but OK, if you're happy, we're happy
21:37<grummund>:D
21:38<grummund>basically i have my script check for the commands that it needs, but checking for cat, rm, mv, etc. would be silly.
21:40<abrotman>grummund: aptitude search ~pstandard
21:40<abrotman>for example
21:41<grummund>-bash: aptitude: command not found
21:41<grummund>oh the irony :D
21:41<bremner>grummund: oh, then essential actually makes sense
21:41<abrotman>I'm sure you can work out how to install that tool
21:42<grummund>sure i can. and thanks. :)
21:43<abrotman>dpkg: standard task
21:43<dpkg>rumour has it, standard task is a "task" that should be installed on all machines during the installer stage. It installs packages that are important, required and standard (i.e. "aptitude install ~pstandard ~prequired ~pimportant"). Packages in the <essential> set are always installed. Also ask me about <tasksel>.
