16:32<flips>if you select the specific kernel version, you get less kernel updates nagging ...
16:32<sney>they will both install the same kernel. the difference with the first one is it is a metapackage referring to whatever the current amd64 kernel is in the debian release you are using.
16:32<sney>do not use the nvidia installer, it breaks things
16:33<friendly_passerby>ahh thanks for the kernel advice
16:33<friendly_passerby>nvidia does have its own installer but i am determined to get the repo version to work
16:33<sney>is it a regular discrete gpu or one of those hybrid monstrosities?
16:33<flips>ok, don't listen to me about nvidia, I have ati, intel and matrox
16:33<flips>;-p
16:33<friendly_passerby>lol
16:33<friendly_passerby>not sure what you mean by discrete... its a GTX 960
16:34<sney>ok, not super new, not hybrid, that should "just work"
16:34<friendly_passerby>should ;) welcome to my world of pain, friend
16:34<sney>though I haven't had to go down that road in a while so my knowledge might be outdated
16:34<friendly_passerby>i have had it working once in jessie, so i know it CAN
16:35<friendly_passerby>but i dont remember how i did it
16:35<friendly_passerby>i am going to follow this guide https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
16:36<friendly_passerby>my environment is XFCE id ont know if that will matter
16:36<sney>no that doesn't matter
16:36<sney>it looks like it's still pretty much the same procedure. install headers and nvidia-driver, it builds the module, reboot
16:37<friendly_passerby>that's what they want you to think
16:37<friendly_passerby>this is my 7th fresh install
16:37<friendly_passerby>after i reboot, it turns out nouveau is loaded even though it is blacklisted
16:37<friendly_passerby>the driver installs correctly but does not load
16:38<friendly_passerby>i have done nvidia-detect and it recommends nvidia-driver
16:39<sney>yeah for a 960 that's what you would use
16:39<friendly_passerby>ok the install is almost finished, i will go through my process step by step
16:39<sney>if nouveau is still showing up even though it's blacklisted you could move the module out of the kernel tree so it definitely can't load
16:40<friendly_passerby>i believe nouveau loads as a failsafe due to nvidia not loading
16:40<friendly_passerby>why nvidia doesn't load is what i can't get to the bottom of
16:40<sney>when nouveau is loaded, nvidia can't
16:40<friendly_passerby>yes, but nouveau loads because nvidia doesnt
16:41<sney>that's why there's a blacklist. furthermore, there is no "failsafe" option like you describe. if it couldn't load the video driver it's supposed to fall back to driverless vesa vga
16:41<friendly_passerby>i believe you may be incorrect there, but i am happy to remove nouveau from kernel tree in a bit
16:41<sney>after the nvidia install but before the reboot, check in /etc/modprobe.d to see if the blacklist is actually in place
16:42<friendly_passerby>sure
16:42<sney>nouveau.ko is located in /lib/modules/(version)/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau
16:42<friendly_passerby>ok thanks
16:43<friendly_passerby>there is a nvidia-nouveau-blacklists.conf file that gets created in modprobe.d
16:43<friendly_passerby>and it has the line "blacklist nouveau" in it
16:43<sney>ok that should work fine.
16:43<friendly_passerby>yeah

16:44<sney>the only reason a blacklist would fail is if nouveau was in the initrd and loading before the system even got to parse modprobe.d
16:44<friendly_passerby>i see
16:44<sney>does the installer still ask the "targeted initrd" question? it might have gotten in there that way
16:45<friendly_passerby>i dont believe it does. but it does rebuild it i think

17:12<sney>weird, it is supposed to pull that in automatically as a dependency. well, that should fix you up. restart X
17:14<friendly_passerby>uninstalling nouveau-video wants to remove a whole lot of dependencies
17:15<friendly_passerby>is there anything else you would suggest, i feel like it will leave me in dependency hell
17:16<sney>without apt's actual output, I have no basis to make a determination about that
17:16<friendly_passerby>ok
17:16<sney>but theoretically just having video-nvidia installed (which it should have been already) will enable X to use it, and not try to load nouveau
17:17<friendly_passerby>it was already, sorry i did not append xserver to my initial search for it
17:17<friendly_passerby>to clarify xserver-nvidia-video whatever was installed already
17:18<friendly_passerby>you see where it says in my xorg log "Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 0"... is there a way to edit that
