08:29<grummund>morning all, deborphan -n lists the package gnupg2, is there a way to avoid that?
08:31<grummund>the -n ignores 'suggested' and 'recommended' dependencies, so how do you mark the package as specifically wanted?

08:41<itd>grummund: Does 'apt-mark manual gnupg2' help?
08:41<sicelo>i would like to ask how to report a bug that affects a bug that affects a package in stable (as well as sid), and have it fixed for stable? upstream has a fix for it now. package in question is glib2.0 to be specific.

08:48<razing>hey there. This the right place to ask for help ?
08:48<sicelo>yes razing
08:48<grummund>itd: thanks, but apt-mark says "gnupg2 was already set to manually installed."
08:48<sicelo>assuming you have debian, that is :)
08:49<razing>have an issue when i moved from stable (stretch) to testing. Have a couple of leftover wine packages i can't remove
08:49<razing>i get an error on PATH missing ldconfig and start-stop-daemon
08:49<razing>only these old packages are having issues. I can install and remove new ones just fine
08:50<sicelo>maybe #debian-next? not sure. anyway, the PATH thing is probably from using 'su' instead of 'su -'
08:52-!-dvs [~hibbard@00012127.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
08:52<razing>thank you sicelo , thay seems to have done the trick
08:53<grummund>sicelo: unless it is security related i think the best you can hope for is for the fix to be done in testing, then you (or someone) would need to backport it.

16:46<at0m>nightshift: i have a (rather old) external (PATA disk) enclosure that does firewire. much better speeds that with USB2, and saves the CPU. maybe you can find something similar (SATA upgrade would be nice on mine)
16:48<at0m>nightshift: if you're looking for bare performance, firewire is so much better than USB2. otoh, your next laptop may not support firewire. for pc's that's not an issue since you can install PCI(e) firewire card
16:48<nightshift>at0m, not worth it really, I'm running a drive with a USB3.0 interface on it, and I want to leave that drive accessible to all the other non-firewire equipped computers, just in case. Also, in the likely chance that the drive itself outlives the machine, I won't be buying another firewire capable one
16:49<at0m>nightshift: ofc, i see. could be that you needed this specific laptop to get fast disk access, there 1394 adapter could have been an option
16:50<at0m>FWIW, my firewire enclose also has USB connection =)
16:50<nightshift>In all likelyhood the machine I'm currently on right now will replace the old macbook when it croaks. This machine isn't 3.0 either, so, that's part of the reason I was hoping there was a non-pc/expresscard option....

17:20<nightshift>at0m Hmmmm, sort of on the topic. If I've got a usb2.0 port that is only giving me 1.1 speeds, that's a firmware issue, right? I don't have the non-free repo activated on this system right now (running stretch)
17:21<at0m>nightshift: apparently, the kernel can demote any USB port to a lower version if it deems the port not up to specs. that could be voltage/amps, for example
17:21<at0m>nightshift: i got 4 USB2 controllers on this one box, all of them are 1.1 for linux.
17:22<nightshift>gotcha, so, might be the kernel thinks the port isn't behaving properly?
17:22<at0m>yes
17:22<at0m>could be any of a number of requirements/specs that fails
17:22<nightshift>Figures, so, even if I had a 3.0 controller (the machine I really want it on is an ubuntu server install) I may not get the speeds anyway
17:24<at0m>right
17:24<at0m>one of the next reboots, i'll look into BIOS voltage regulation of these USB2 ports here, maybe i can drive that up a notch
17:25<nightshift>well, that sucks a little. Guess when/if I build the server I should make sure I have a big enough drive for the data that's gonna go on it, and not depend on the external then....
17:26<at0m>that's not even considering the fact that usb will always be serial - ie. you transfer one large file and any other operation will wait till that mv is complete. not so on firewire/SATA/PATA disks.
17:27<nightshift>Yeah, I might try playing with that too, now that I have a clue what the issue might be. Have to tried the non-free firmware, just in case? Watching my boot I know there are at least two non-free firmware packages I need, haven't bothered to do that because everything I NEED to work does.
17:27<nightshift>true, very true

21:55<nightshift>stupid question time. I just upgraded from stretch to buster, both used the cinnamon de. However, the terminal I'd been using in stretch is gone, replaced by xterm. I prefer the other terminal, anyone know what package I need to install to get that back?
