00:47<babyf>Ok, I am using dpkg --pre-invoke to run some script before a package is installed, but is there a way I can see what the package name/version is in the script?
00:48<twb>Oh, I should point out that the GPG check is done by apt, not dpkg
00:48<twb>So if you e.g. "wget foo.deb && dpkg -i foo.deb", you're on your own
00:49<twb>re pre-invoke, I don't know offhand.
00:49<twb>I guess you mean DPkg::Pre-Invoke in apt.conf ?
00:49<twb>It's bound to be available somehow
00:55<jm_>I tried it now and the only thing I see is DPKG_HOOK_ACTION=install in environment (which is what man page mentions)
00:57<twb>I would've guessed it's on some high fd
00:57<twb>because that's how dpkg seems to do its IPC
00:58<babyf>I just want to somehow get all my pacman hooks working, I asked yesterday but then went to bed, trying it now but I don't think I can get it to work with way.
00:58<twb>>puzzled<
00:58<twb>debian supports pacman?
00:59<babyf>no, I was using pacman, it has support to execute user defined scripts when some action happens on some package, I want the same working on debian
00:59<twb>OK. What's your hook actually doing?
00:59<jm_>what's the end goal?
01:00<babyf>one creates snapshots, and another one writes entries to journald where I then have a listener that forwards them as wall messages when I'm on the console or otherwise notifies me in my WM.
01:02<babyf>I guess I can watch dpkg.log for the latter, but that is a bit clumsy, but not sure how I can get the snapshots to work, i.e. after every install create one for the system so that I can rollback if something goes wrong.
01:03<twb>so like the first one is basically to be able to zfs/btrfs rollback to the previous known-good state?
01:03<babyf>yes
01:03<twb>Surely that's a problem someone in Debian has already attacked
01:03<jm_>have you checked if Pre-Invoke in apt gives more info?
01:04<babyf>jm_: not yet, perhaps I should
01:04<jm_>for Pre-Install-Pkgs it says «APT will pass the filenames of all .deb files it is going to install»
01:05<jm_>ahh and even more with version 2, so that should have you covered if you don't install stuff with dpkg
01:05<twb>apt will batch debs into discrete dpkg runs, too, so e.g. "apt install gnome" will trigger a dpkg pre-hook, say, 6 times
01:06<twb>re your notifier part, if your goal is to be reminded to restart things that were upgraded, there's a package called something like needsrestart-user or needrestart-gui which might meet your needs
01:07<twb>I typically install that + unattended-upgrades as part of my BCP
01:07<jm_>needrestart - check which daemons need to be restarted after library upgrades
01:07<jm_>needrestart-session - check for processes need to be restarted in user sessions
01:08-!-iflema [~ian@00019eaf.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
01:08-!-iflema is "ian" on #debian #linux
01:08<babyf>ok, I guess that will work. Also, I was wondering if some information could be passed to trigger scripts like which package actually caused them to wakeup so i could make a generic hooks deb which shows interest in / changing and then decides which hook to run from a directory based on the package/version
01:09-!-jhutchins_wk [~jonathan@00011b69.user.oftc.net] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:09<babyf>this is similar to how I got it to work with rpm (bar some issues that won't be fixed, per the maintainer) with all of its transfiletriggerin and related stuff
01:09<twb>jm_: thanks
01:11<twb>babyf: your generic deb can register a "trigger" for certain directory paths, and if anything is added/removed in those paths, it'll run your deb's postconf script at the end of the run. But I don't think that is useful for your case.
01:11<twb>babyf: unless you e.g. ONLY care about python upgrades, and thus watch /usr/lib/python*/
01:12<babyf>but what if I care about / changing (i.e. any package being added/removed) and then based on some details passed to my script I can decide what hook to run?
01:12<twb>babyf: even if these existing things don't work for you, you can tear them apart and see how they work
01:12<twb>babyf: yeah I dunno about that (re /)
01:27<babyf>I think Pre-Install-Pkgs is working for my use case, thanks. (Though I think this neat fd thing could also be used for Dpkg::Pre-Invoke and Dpkg::Post-Invoke which are arguably more useful and would allow for hooks to run post the action)
01:33<babyf>Let's see if I can make some sense of the code and try implementing it :-).

10:05<itd>Dkeagle1911: You could try to use '%U' or '%F' for "${file-i-clicked-on}". Just a guess though.

10:19<Dkeagle1911>i just found a tutorial to put "Open with Sublime Text" DIRECTLY in the contextual menu, i think i'll go for it xD

16:25<mnuhmnuh>sqrt{not}: i would guess that'd work well.
16:32<mnuhmnuh>sqrt{not}: you may need to bang a bit on initrd to make it happy.
16:32<sqrt{not}>I think I should be OK, the only thing I worry about is if the boot-sector grub loader has a hard-pointer to some binary in the /boot directory, or if it's smart enough to deal with it as a directory. The partition starts on the same sector as before
16:34<mnuhmnuh>i see nothing like that here.
16:35<sqrt{not}>mnuhmnuh: the /boot directory has 2 versions of initrd-img-xxxxx already, one for each kernel version grub knows
