---Logopened Sun Nov 11 00:00:04 2018
00:00<digi-u>When you are accessing a function requiring root access there isn't a a check box I can see? Yes, Stretch asks for additional installation software after it insists on requiring access to the files in a optical drive.

00:03<@themill>sounds like you might want to edit your sources.list
00:03<digi-u>Hello, mnuhmnuh?
00:04<mnuhmnuh>digi-u: if you've additional on any media it can connect to (usb, network, cd/dvd, ...), it should handle it.
00:05<mnuhmnuh>installer.
00:06<mnuhmnuh>digi-u: assuming good network connect, netinst iso is all most need.
00:06<mnuhmnuh>boot from usbkey, install.
00:07<digi-u>@themill, No, the dvdrom drive I use takes up 2 usb ports and I'm installing onto a xsdxc micro card in a USB adapter. I already have everything on a drive. I'm waiting for bitlocker to deactivate so I can access it from linux.
00:08<@themill>I have no idea what you're talking about now. Try solving one problem at a time.
00:09<digi-u>mnuhmnuh, That is what I have done using rufus 3.x and it installer insists on accessing files from an optical drive. Try it?
00:09<@themill>rufus is known to be a poor option
00:09<mnuhmnuh>xsdxc?
00:13<digi-u>Micro SDXC data storage card like what is used in a Digital Camera. https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/sandisk-sdsqunc-064g-cn6ma-64gb-ultra-uhs-i-microsdxc-memory-card/12600442.aspx?
00:13<digi-u>x is used instead of writing micro sometimes.
00:15<digi-u>@themill, I didn't know that. This is the first time I've had issues with it. What is the preferred option?
00:17<digi-u>Really what I need to do is include the nonfree firmware in the first ISO of stretch. Is there a anything that will allow me to see the root password as I type it In stretch?
00:17<mnuhmnuh>digi-u: if it's just a glorified usbkey your box can boot from, "cp blah.iso /dev/sdX", and install. prob? what?
00:18<mnuhmnuh>"... allow me to see the root password ..."; why?
00:18<digi-u>I didn't have a pre-existing linux install available.
00:19<mnuhmnuh>debian live cd/dvd?
00:20<mnuhmnuh>booted from usbkey/cd/dvd/...
00:22<@themill>!win32diskimager
00:22<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show Debian .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
00:22<mnuhmnuh>digi-u: been doin' this since '93 or so. installer's pretty malleable. :-)
00:22<digi-u>Yes, I thought of a Live disc. I use E2B for multibooting and the newest version seems to have an issue with my CPU. When I try to boot some live distros a stack trace error.
00:24<digi-u>I just didn't have a way to add the nonfree firmware because all the usb port were taken. dpkg, thanks very much!! =)
00:24<mnuhmnuh>don't know e2b
00:25<mnuhmnuh>get a usbhub! cheap!
00:25<digi-u>I know. When there isn't the issue I'm experiencing, E2B is sweet.
00:26<mnuhmnuh>dpkg is a bot, btw.
00:26<dpkg>mnuhmnuh: are you smoking crack?
00:26<digi-u>Yes, I have a hub at home. I didn't when I was at the library.
00:27<mnuhmnuh>well, there's your problem.
00:27<mnuhmnuh>sheesh.
00:27<digi-u>Do you use a multibooter?
00:28<digi-u>Does a basic install of stretch come with a firewall?
00:30<mnuhmnuh>digi-u: i use grub to boot, but i don't multi-boot. just stretch.

00:32<digi-u>I didn't seem to see it, the kernel supports iptables, but I would prefer not to tackle the rule syntax right now.
00:33<mnuhmnuh>there's nice apps that wrap firewall complexity. research.

09:22<kolden>hello. i want to verify the integrity of http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/stretch/Release. using Release.gpg in the same directory and debian-archive-keyring, I get that the file is signed with "Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (7.0/wheezy)", "Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (8/jessie)" and ""Debian Stable Release Key (9/stretch)". however, I can only find the two first keys on
09:22<kolden>https://ftp-master.debian.org/keys.html. hence, I cannot verify the last signature
09:22<kolden>my question is whether anyone knows where i can verify this last key
09:22<petn-randall>kolden: The last key is likely from buster. Note that you only need to trust one of the keys to verify the signature, not all of them.
09:23<kolden>petn-randall: right, thanks!

09:30<kolden>itd: i verified the first two by looking at https://ftp-master.debian.org/keys.html and comparing
09:31<kolden>i guess i have to trust the TLS certificate, but that sounds ok to me
09:31<kolden>is there any other reliable way to verify them?
09:31<petn-randall>kolden: Debian ships with the keys.
09:31<petn-randall>kolden: And your apt already does that for you.

09:31<kolden>petn-randall: i did gpg --keyring /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg --verify Release.gpg Release
09:32<kolden>is that what you were thinking about? debian-archive-keyring package?
09:32<petn-randall>kolden: Sure, that works.
09:33<petn-randall>kolden: Is there a reason you're doing it by hand, though?
09:33<kolden>petn-randall: executing the mentioned command i got "WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature! There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner." on all three keys
09:34<kolden>that is why i thought i had to do a manual check
09:34<petn-randall>kolden: That has to do with the GPG web of trust. You'd usually *manually* mark keys as trusted. But this is irrelevant for apt, as it just ships the keys it should trust.
09:36<petn-randall>kolden: If you use it to verify a signature of people, you'd manually check their identity and verify they are in possession of the key, then mark it with various levels of trust. That is largely irrelevant for apt, as there are only trusted keys in the keyring. If the signature fails, it gets rejected.
09:37<kolden>petn-randall: okay, so i could choose to trust debian-archive-keyring since i trust apt, and since this keyring knows these three keys, even though theyre not marked as trusted, it is enough that they have valid signatures?

Apparently it's a regression in 1.1.7 with USB sound cards and 1.1.6 should be ok, is there an easy way to downgrade? install libasound2=1.1.6-1 just says there's no such version.
