05:10<grove>The output from `update-alternatives --list w` is better suited to be used as an argument for another command, than what `namei` can provide (at least as I can tell from the manpage), so if you're searching for something you know (or suspect) is handled by the alternatives system, that's probably a better choice,

05:56<abacate>Hello. My grub corrupted again. I have an USB device with the Debian image on it. How to fix grub from the busybox rescue mode?
05:56<abacate>All I find are the debian commands for fixing it. But those commands don't work on the busybox, obviously.
05:57<bremner>one option would be to boot a full rescue image, like grml
05:57<abacate>bremner, full rescue image?
05:58<bremner>i.e. don't use busybox
05:58<bremner>but a real OS, if that makes it easier
05:58<abacate>OK. I downloaded the Debian CD image. The Debian DVD image would be the full image, right?
05:58<bremner>no. You need a live image. Either debian live, grml, or ...
05:59<bremner>I guess one obvious question is why your grub config keeps getting corrupted...
06:00<abacate>bremner, this time the system froze during update
06:00<abacate>It's not much frequent, it's that I don't remember what I did previously to reinstall it
06:00<abacate>I'll try debian live, thanks.
06:00<bremner>have you checked for hardware problems? memtest86 and smartmon ?
06:01<bremner>basically, infrequent is too often for that kind of problem. It should never happen.
06:01<abacate>bremner, no, I'm on my parents house. I don't live here, I arrived to fix the PC, tried update, and it froze
06:02<abacate>The PC has some bad configs that I never fixed, and I'll need to fix them now, because my parents don't know how to circumvent them
06:02<abacate>Like, cups not working from time to time and needing to restart the printer

06:04<jm_>abacate: debian install cd has recover boot option, tried using that?
06:04<abacate>jm_, yes, but it only lends me busybox
06:05<abacate>I don't know how to reinstall grub from busybox, because the commands aren't for it
06:05<abacate>Do you know how?

06:12<jm_>abacate: ok so rescue mode asked me which partition to use as root fs, then the next step gives a choice of reinstalling grub
06:12<abacate>jm_, when I choose /dev/sda1 it gives me a red screen, saying there isn't a shell there. Obsiously.
06:13<abacate>Are you using the cd image? Or the dvd image?
06:13<abacate>Then the only option is to use the image shell, that is busybox
06:15<jm_>abacate: I use the netinst CD - did you use the option "Execute a shell in /dev/sd.." or "Reinstall GRUB boot loader"?
06:16<abacate>jm_, wait a minute, I'll boot the machine now

06:19<abacate>OK, flash drive on USB port... Booted. On the installer boot menu, I chose "Advanced options", then "Rescue mode". After the initial settings (language, timezone, network, etc), it asks me root filesystem.
06:20<abacate>Options are: /dev/sda1; /dev/sda2; /dev/sda3; /dev/sda4; /dev/sdb1; /dev/sdb2; mount raid cluster; don't use a root filesystem.
06:21<abacate>When I choose /dev/sda1, and then "run a shell on /dev/sda1", the blue background turns red, and it says "no shell was found on /target".
06:22<abacate>Choosing "don't use a root filesystem" gives me busybox

06:33<jm_>abacate: don't try random stuff, what happens if you mount /dev/sda1 in busybox?
06:34<abacate>But I can load a normal shell on /dev/sda2
06:34<abacate> /dev/sda1 doesn't have a shell to be run. The only option is using busybox, which is useless
06:35<abacate>But I can't use apt update on /dev/sda2, as it gives me DNS error
06:35<jm_>ok so you are saying sda2 is your root fs? so sda1 is maybe /boot?
06:35<abacate>Dunno
06:36<abacate>I think I'll have best luck with sda2
06:36<jm_>well try to find out then, mount it and look at what you see
06:36<abacate>On sda2 I see the normal debian shell
06:36<jm_>mkdir /tmp/m && mount -r /dev/sda1 /tmp/m && ls -l /tmp/m ; umount /tmp/m
06:36<jm_>repeat for sda2
06:37<abacate>This is to be run on busybox?

06:40<jm_>yes, you can run it on tty2 (alt-right/left to change ttys)
06:41<abacate>mounting /dev/sda1 on /tmp/m failed: Device or resource busy
06:42<abacate>Can't I just assume sda2 is my root and use it?
06:45<abacate>I wanted to follow https://feeding.cloud.geek.nz/posts/reinstalling-grub-on-unbootable-debian/
06:45<piper>if this fails, you will know mkdir -p /media/sda2 mount /dev/sda2 /media/sda2 /usr/sbin/grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/sda2 /dev/sda
06:46<jm_>/usr/sbin/grub-install probably does not exist in install,er you'll need to execute it from chroot, ala:
06:46<jm_>!fixmbr
06:46<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext4 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), chroot into it (chroot /target), run "mount /boot/efi" on EFI and "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". See also <rescue mode>, <dual boot guide>, <supergrub>.
06:47<jm_>and if you have separate /boot, you'll want to mount that too
06:47<abacate>jm_, on /dev/sda2, from the graphical context, I can enter chroot, and have /boot/efi mounted
06:47<abacate>Then I get the normal debian shell
06:49<jm_>abacate: ok and if you run grub-install there, what happens?
06:50<abacate>Would I install it on /dev/sda1 ?
06:51<jm_>well /dev/sda if it's the only boot loader on the system

13:50<Ryblade>hello, i need a bit of help getting debian installed. it needs nonfree firmware for my wifi, so i grabbed the appropriate package and extracted it to an ext4-formatted usb drive, but the installer won't detect the firmware files after i insert the drive.
13:51<Ryblade>i've also tried just putting the tar.xz file on the drive without extracting it, that doesn't work either.

13:53<Synthea>jhutchins, also https://github.com/ngircd/ngircd/blob/master/doc/SSL.txt says to use 2048 bit encryption and I've used just that
13:53<Synthea>Ryblade, You don't have to download tar.gz file, you just need to download the deb package
13:53<Synthea>._.
13:55<Ryblade>do i get that from somewhere else? i'm not seeing a download link to the .deb in the link i've been working from.
13:56<Ryblade>also i just read in the install guide that FAT works best for the installer, i'm gonna reformat my usb drive to use FAT instead.
13:56<Synthea>Ryblade, wait if you want to add non-free firmware the best options are either download the deb installer and installing them offline or use the debian image with non-free firmware preloade
13:56<Synthea>preloaded
13:57<Synthea>Just wait
13:57<Ryblade>ah, i've been doing a net install so i don't think that comes with the preloaded nonfree firmware.
13:57<Ryblade>k, i'll wait
13:57<sqrt{not}>Ryblade: take a look at this page: https://d-i.debian.org/manual/en.amd64/ch06s04.html
14:00<Synthea>Ryblade, also that https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/9.6.0+nonfree/
14:02<Ryblade>oh nice, Synthea, does that include pretty much all the nonfree firmware i may need in one iso?
14:02<sqrt{not}>Ryblade: if you're succeeding with net install (without the wifi thing) just finish the install, then enable non-free in your sources.list, and install the missing firmware with apt or aptitude or whatever
14:02<Synthea>Ryblade, pratically

17:56<jhutchins_wk>!unetbootin
17:56<dpkg>UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) allows creation of bootable USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions. http://unetbootin.sf.net/ Not recommended for use with Debian CD/DVD images, as it mangles the installer in cruel and unusual ways, resulting in hard to debug problems. Ask me about <hybrid images>, <usb install>, <win32diskimager>.
17:57<jhutchins_wk>mnuhmnuh: There, that last factoid.
17:57<jhutchins_wk>I strongly suspect that unetbootin is simply sensitive to user error.
