08:57<adhawkins>HI all. I'm running fail2ban on one of my machines, and am finding that the same sets of addresses are showing up on a regular basis. Is there any 'debian' way to create a file containing a list of IP addresses / ranges to block, that can be automatically applied at startup?
08:58<petn-randall>adhawkins: You might want to check the fail2ban documentation if you can save/restore the tables during reboot. But I personally don't think that fail2ban is a good choice, as IMHO the problem is somewhere else.
08:59<petn-randall>(that likely is: using password authentication for SSH)
08:59<adhawkins>petn-randall: I wasn't planning to do it within fail2ban. More some other script that runs at startup and just blanket blocks ranges as I find them.
08:59<adhawkins>petn-randall: And it's not SSH that is being protected, it's SIP logins.

09:44<duclicsic>adhawkins: iptables and ipset combined is what you need. the netfilter-persistent package deals with loading rules on boot, but afaik the version currently in stable doesn't support ipset just yet.
09:45<duclicsic>you can however grab the proper scripts from the package in sid. doing so isn't going to make frankendebian because netfilter-persistent is extensible with scripts, and all you'd be doing is getting the scripts for ipset which are not included in the stable package yet
09:45<petn-randall>I'm not sure if fail2ban in stable already uses ipsets, IIRC it doesn't.
09:46<duclicsic>i just mean he can use ipset to make a blacklist to be restored on boot, if he's seeing the same sources hit fail2ban frequently..
09:49<duclicsic>adhawkins: i have a fair bit of experience with protecting against SIP brute force attempts, running fail2ban in front of SIP, and netfilter in general. feel free to PM if you want to discuss in any length, i wouldn't want to spam up the channel.
09:52<petn-randall>I also had SIP running on the internet, and after the incident, I decided against it. :)

09:57<duclicsic>i work for a hosted voip provider, so SIP exposed to the internet is essential for our primary business
10:00<petn-randall>Indeed. In my case it was a SMB with both bosses using SIP "because they can". A bug in asterisk back then cost us a few thousand in phone bills, after that we shut it down. :)
