02:23<srimadhan11>Hi all!. I was using ubuntu for more than 3 years, now I want to try debian. I tried creating bootable usb drive using dd, ddrescue and 'Startup Disk Creator'(which is available in ubuntu with package name 'usb-creator-gtk'), but none of them worked. That usb is recognized on boot menu, but screen remains grey after that usb is selected.
02:24<srimadhan11>I have tried both official and unofficial version, none worked
02:25<srimadhan11>Am I missing something?
02:29<srimadhan11>But all the three tools(dd, ddrescue and 'Startup Disk Creator') successfully creates bootable usb for ubuntu
02:31<srimadhan11>I googled, but didn't got any solution. Any advice or solution will be very much helpful.

05:54<Mikaela>Hi, I think depending on which command gave that, installing that package would have new depedencies or want to remove packages from your system. I think the primary way would be either "sudo apt upgrade" which should be the same as "sudo apt upgrade --with-new-pkgs" or if it wants to remove packages "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" (I think the -get is optional and apt works the same way)

14:15<WoC>blast007, he may be using the hybrid mode, where you have gpt but also mbr
14:15<jhutchins>That was just guessing. What I have is the "preservation mode" MBR that has a single, full-disk partition, and a GPT. I don't know what the implication of overwriting that "preservation" MBR would be.
14:16<WoC>jhutchins, as long as they are consistent, that should present no issues
14:17<jhutchins>WoC: They're not. The MBR has one full disk partition, the GPT has the correct partitioning.
14:17<WoC>i c
14:17<WoC>gparted can usually fix that
14:18<jhutchins>I could copy the GPT to the MBR with gdisk, but I don't know why it's working now.
14:19<WoC>Magic, until it tries the mbr... ;P
14:19<jhutchins>WoC: No, the MBR is not functional.
14:20<jhutchins>I'm not sure what it does, but it doesn't have the partitions in it.
14:20<jhutchins>Someone proposed that it was a fall-through from one Grub stage that didn't understand GPT to one that does.
14:20<WoC>well, if you have backups, try the gdisk you mentioned
14:21<jhutchins>WoC: Yeah, I'm going to investigate further before I experiment.
14:22<jhutchins>I'm thinking I might fix the UFI boot and hope that the process doesn't break legacy, then I'll look into the legacy error.
14:22<WoC>if u have uefi, you should not need legacy
14:23<jhutchins>WoC: I think it's early UEFI, I don't know what to do to make it stop looking for the Windows bootloader. I have a clue, but I need to nail it down. I'm pretty sure the process of fixing it will be non-destructive.

14:35<jhutchins>sqrt{not}: Can you boot it to external media with EFI?
14:35<sqrt{not}>I think there is sometimes a question of which partitions are marked "bootable" and also exactly where the first part of grub executable is actually stored on disk.
14:36<jhutchins>sqrt{not}: From what I have read the boot flag is only used by DOS (maybe Windows).
14:36<sqrt{not}>jhutchins: I think the answer is no, but it's been a long time. I'm not sure right now which mode it's actually booting in, i'd have to shut it down and check.

17:54<sqrt{not}>!nvidia
17:54<dpkg>Where possible, Nvidia graphic processing units are supported using the open source <nouveau> driver on Debian systems by default. To install the proprietary "nvidia" driver, see https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers or ask me about <nvidia dkms>, <nvidia legacy>; installing this directly from nvidia.com (i.e. with <nvidia-installer>) is _not_ supported in #debian, please go to #nvidia on irc.freenode.net.
17:55<LZZ>I can even get to install proprietary drivers...

17:56<sqrt{not}>LZZ: do you know if you have a driver installed for it, or which driver you have ?
17:57<LZZ>Iḿ not sure but i think that the problem happens even if I install without a desktop enviroment, since it happened on a console screen
17:57<amacater>LZZ - What's the card?
17:57<LZZ>gtx 1070
17:58<LZZ>I meant to say ¨I can´t even get to install proprietary drivers¨
17:58<LZZ>sorry
17:59<amacater>I've previously found it easiest to install an absolute minimum text only desktop then to add non-free, then to install the appropriate (proprietary) drivers from Debian's Nvidia drivers. That blacklists nouveau and does all the other steps
17:59<LZZ>fresh install -> sddm login -> colored noise -> ctrl+alt+f1 -> noise changes, but it´s still noise
17:59<amacater>It's horrrible but it works
18:00<amacater>The trick is that you have to start from almost nothing - so you don't have X - you just have a console and text mode, build-essential. Once you've got the drivers installed - then you use tasksel to install the desktop of your choice
18:00<LZZ>But if I get the noise in the console window, I guess it means it wont work even if I don´t install a desktop enviroment, doesn´t it?
18:01<LZZ>with ubundu, kubuntu and fedora, I had issues even with the installer
18:01<amacater>If you install a basic text mode only - using expert mode to install and unselecting any desktop. That defaults to a vey basic VGA compatible screen
18:01<LZZ>debian installer worked fine
18:01<amacater>And from there you can move forward. Have had to do this with some laptops
18:03<amacater>Anything that already has X on and you bring up terminal / konsole is already having problems. I first had to do this when nouveau wouldn't even let me use a mouse but Nvidia proprietary worked
18:04<LZZ>well, I´ll have to do this, I guess... I needed a linux installed fast, but I guess I can´t have it.

19:52<WoC>dang ~465 GiB swap ?

20:00<sqrt{not}>maybe 64 giga * 8 bytes/word which is in the neighborhood of the limit i think i bumped ?
