00:53<twb>Installing amd64-microcode didn't seem to patch my CPU
00:53<rudi_s>twb: Did you reboot?
00:53<twb>In that package I can see fam15h through fam17h files --- but dmesg says I have AMD Turion(tm) II Neo N40L Dual-Core Processor (family: 0x10, model: 0x6, stepping: 0x3)
00:53<twb>rudi_s: yes
00:54<twb>Does my earlier family just mean I'm out of luck?
00:54<twb>[ 5.550372] microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x010000c8
00:54<rudi_s>I'm no expert, but I think so.
00:54<twb>^ I get that in dmesg both before and after install + reboot
00:56-!-walking [~walking@00022adc.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:57<twb>Aha!
00:57<twb>There is also a "microcode_amd.bin" with no "famX", and family 0x10 IS mentioned in microcode_amd.bin.README
00:57<twb>So my best guess is simply that my N40L CPU is pre-patched to the current version, already?
00:59<twb>Still not very conclusive

01:18<twb>On a tangent: I see we still have both memtest86 and memtest86+. Which sucks less?
01:18-!-walking [~walking@00022adc.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
01:18-!-walking is "walking" on #debian
01:20<twb>memtest86 Description: suggests memtest86+, so I guess memtest86+ sucks less
01:26<jm_>I had much more success using gcc as memory tester ;)
01:28<twb>I dunno how much backstory I gave you guys last week
01:28<twb>I have a HP ProLiant MicroServer g7, AMD N40L CPU, 4GB Samsung ECC RAM.
01:29<twb>It boots Debian Live off an internal USB key, does RAID1 across a pair of 2TB WD Reds, then plain ext4 on top (no LVM).
01:29<twb>Then it just rsnapshots onto that once a day. Dumb as bricks.
01:29<twb>Anyway, its ext4 has managed to become so badly corrupted that e2fsck can't fix it.
01:30<twb>I left it trying to copy the recoverable data onto a third disk over the weekend, and when I came in this morning, it had hung again.
01:30<twb>Because it's Debian Live, the logs aren't saved anywhere, but I can't find anything obviously wrong
01:30-!-hasebastian [~hasebasti@2a02:810d:8d00:4f8:6f57:d24c:dd3f:4bdc] has joined #debian
01:30-!-hasebastian is "hasebastian" on #debian-kde #debian
01:31-!-walking [~walking@00022adc.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:31<twb>(ECC RAM, SMART self-tests OK, mdstat OK, no physical weirdness e.g. snakes, mice, dust)
01:31<twb>It was running stretch w/ 4.14bpo kernel for the last year or so; I bumped it to 4.18bpo last week.
01:32<jm_>hung with no console output?
01:33<twb>OK so this morning its DHCP client had stopped, so no SSH. I could Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch terminals, but systemd wasn't auto-starting gettys on them
01:34<twb>The still-logged-in root shell on vt1 didn't respond promptly, but when I walked away for an hour and came back, it had printed another "root#" type bash prompt, so presumably it WAS doing something, just very very slowly
01:34<twb>So my working theory is that whatever happened it made e.g. the HBA shit itself and constantly reboot, which kept the kernel busy enough that it couldn't action anything else
01:35<twb>Oh, also while it's not on the UPS here, we log power quality so should notice if there was e.g. a brownout.
01:35<jm_>does debian live offer boot to ram option? in that case you should at least be able to start some commands to investigate
01:36<twb>jm_: yes, I'm using that

01:36-!-clonak is "clonak" on #debian #NwH #moocows #Digital-Deception
01:36<twb>i.e. its normal boot method is to copy the filesystem.squashfs into a tmpfs, then unmount the USB key completely, and just run out of ram
01:37<twb>It's doing a memtest86+ now. If there's anything else I can try, let me know.
01:38<jm_>I would try to use gcc but that might be problematic with debian live
01:38<twb>jm_: you mean like... just try to compile firefox and see if it destroys the hardware?
01:38<jm_>twb: yup
01:39<twb>blehhhhhh
01:39<twb>I mean, it's probably reasonable, it just feels ugly
01:40<jm_>metadata_csum ext4 option also sounds reasonable, but you probably don't have that enabled

02:51<twb>A *HA*!
02:52<twb>Even though the filesystem is semi-buggered, and it's not mounted normally, I just (finally) realized I can still inspect the journals thereon
02:52<twb># journalctl -oshort-iso -D /mnt/src/log/journal/ -p4 --since=2018-08-01
02:52<twb>-p4 limits by log priority, i.e. ignoring all the boring stuff
02:54<twb>In there, I can see 166 DRDY events, all on 2018-10-03, for ata1.00 and ata3.00 --- which sound like the two HDDs, since they're plugged into bays 1 and 3 of the 4-bay backplane
02:55<twb>Normally DRDY events indicate that the controller on the HDD itself is cactus, but seeing them from *both* disks is supporting evidence that the HBA itself is cactus
02:55<twb>That's the *only* date I can see DRDY events, but that might just mean that most of the days it died, it died too hard to get logs onto itself
02:56-!-walking [~walking@00022adc.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:57<jm_>but wouldn't you then also notice this via SMART?
02:58<twb>smart only checks the disk controllers, it can't check the HBA
02:59<twb>In this case the HBA is probably the AMD equivalent of the PCH, i.e. a chip soldered onto the mainboard, not a separate riser card
03:00<twb>("real" servers generally have either a proprietary raid controller HBA, or a "passthrough" HBA (pretty much just wires), on a daughter board)
03:00<jm_>ahh sure, makes sense
03:01<twb>I've never seen a southbridge or PCH actually fail, so I have no clear idea how to prove it and get the vendor to RMA it
03:02<jm_>I have on my second Athlon board - apparently not an isolated incident
03:02<twb>It's a super cramped case
03:03<twb>If it has hung tomorrow I'll turn it off and open it all up and reseat everything
03:03<jm_>yeah I looked at it when looking for something to replace my atom in a mini ITX case
03:03<twb>the N40L / N54L ?
03:04<jm_>not sure what exact model, hp microserver something
03:04<jm_>but decided it's too custom for my liking
03:05<twb>HP ProLiant Microserver gen7, it's a really nice unit, the key feature is hotswap HDD bays --- can't get that in anything else in the same market segment
03:05<twb>(Some NASs have that, but their mainboard/CPU/RAM is too cut-down and weird to run stock linux)
03:06<jm_>that looks like the right one indeed
03:06<twb>I have a gen10 at home, it's about 20% noisier and a lot uglier, but otherwise nice

11:53<BillyGates>yes, that part
11:54<lids>I'm working in partitioning [beggining the installation]
11:54<BillyGates>I don't think the bootable flag on partitions does anything useful, in Debian at least
11:54<BillyGates>the important part is installing a bootloader on the MBR, master boot record
11:54<BillyGates>so don't install grub to /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2 or whatever the root partition is

Getting conflicting answers from my google-fu so thought I'd ask here: If I run 'nice -n 19 ashellscript.sh' do the commands executed inside ashellscript.sh run at nice 19 or just the script itself? If ashellscript.sh runs anothershellscript.sh does this (sub)script inherit the 19 niceness? in other words is niceness inherited?

19:13<somiaj>ais-admin: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/37896/nice-and-child-processes -- my google-fu found that
19:13<somiaj>and as the answer gave, you can monitor this with top, so run some experiements to see what actually happens.
19:13<ais-admin>niceness is inherited - I just tias'd it.
19:14<somiaj>as that says, it is inherited at the time the child is run, if the niceness changes, the childern will not change with it. Also I think setuid and other such programs (or ones that set their own niceness when run) may affect this. So use case might matter (just a huntch)
19:15<ais-admin>its a special purpose script i'm writing so as long as it work in this specific case i'm happy
19:18<ais-admin>im ssh/rsyncing multiple snapshots to another server - creating - pushing over rsync, removing etc. Noone has complained of any slowdown in operations cause I nice'd 19 all the processes
19:19<ais-admin>so... it works - \o/
19:19<retrospectacus>look into rsync's --bwlimit option to make it network-nice too :)
19:20<ais-admin>indeed I have - thx for the reminder though
19:21<somiaj>I also think you can reduce load by changing how it checks if two files are the same, the defaults fairly quick (I think file size/datestamp is used), I don't think it checks hashsums by default.
19:22<ais-admin>yes thats correct - date/time used first which us usually fastest
19:23<ais-admin>and date/time will work perfectly in my scenario as this will be a once daily operation
19:23<twb>Oh hey I know about that stuff
19:24<twb>From memory, nice ionice -c3 chrt --idle 0 rsync --remote-rsync='nice ionice -c3 chrt --idle 0 rsync'
19:24<twb>Er, that should be --rsync-path
19:25<twb>You should also make sure that OpenSSH is setting the DSCP bits correctly, which it *should* do by default unless you're being clever with ControlMaster.
19:25<twb>i.e. --rsh='ssh -oIPQoS=throughput'
19:25<ais-admin>im never clever
19:27<ais-admin>especially with anything as formidably named as 'ControlMaster'
19:28<twb>ControlMaster basically lets you run multiple SSH sessions over a single SSH connection
19:28<twb>This is especially handy if you have to e.g. do multi-factor auth to create the SSH connection
19:29<twb>The main downside is that your interactive SSH and your bulk SSH (rsync) get treated as one connection, so rsync "slows down" interactive work to the same host
19:29<ais-admin>ahh interesting
19:29<twb>If you are a monster and still allow password-only auth, it's useful for that, too
19:30<twb>To enable it put this at the bottom of your ~/.ssh/config:
19:30<ais-admin>NEVER!
19:30<twb>'Host *\nControlMaster auto\nControlPath ~/.ssh/master-%C\nControlPersist 3600\n'
19:31<twb>That makes it Just Work for everything

20:09<ais-admin>try moving swap up higher and putting the UUID back in place of the /dev/
20:09<ais-admin>other than that - i'd just be guessin
20:14<ais-admin>sso the issue is not your fstab its your initramfs - not sure how to update that with the proper settings - is there some conf file that you can change to tell update-initramfs values you want to use?

20:19<ais-admin>no I dont think thats a good idea. - you can comment the swap line in fstab and update-initramfs again so at least you can boot with out swap while you're fining a solution

20:29<goonieb>ais-admin: yes, that's what I thought, but it was working fine, nope, but the SSDs are, and for hibernating, SSDs are the way to go (-I don't use swap really
20:30<ais-admin>im over my head cause I thought debian always used swap for hibernation - maybe the guys in thetesting channel could shed more light
20:30<goonieb>ais-admin: yes it does
20:31<goonieb>I mean swap is enabled, but I set swapiness
