---Logopened Mon Dec 31 00:00:00 2018
00:00<annadane>i am, because i'm totally missing the point of what you're saying
00:04<sdk>Don't worry it happens to everyone of us ;) anyway my bed is calling me. night!
00:15<rwp>If you put a package in backports then you are signing up to support security upgrades on those packages until the next release.
00:16<annadane>^
00:16<rwp>People might be willing to do that for a package or two. But not for an automated entire repos.
00:16<annadane>automating the process is not ideal

04:27<koleygr>Hi... and happy new year to you... Does anybody knows if ubuntu minimal install has diferences from debian minimal install?
04:28<rudi_s>koleygr: Ubuntu tends to have a lot more (unnecessary) services running, even on a minimal install (I'm talking about server install here, not sure if you can get a minimial ubuntu desktop installation at all).
04:28<rudi_s>*and more packages installed.
04:34<koleygr>thanks rudi_s
04:34<koleygr>Had to imagine that...
04:34<koleygr>thank you very much
04:36<rudi_s>np, personally I'd recommend a minimal Debian ;-)

04:38<amacater>Best way? Run an expert install - clear the selection for everything except basic system and start adding from there - 200 packages or so
04:39-!-CowboyNeal [~pater@000273bc.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:52<koleygr>thanks amacater... You mean to add the packages after the install... Am I right?
04:57<amacater>Yes: If you run the most minimal install - the minimal install is 239 packages including ssh server. At that point, when you finish the install, you have a very minimal system that you can add to.
04:58<amacater>I do this for hardware that has video problems - then I sort out the non-free video _before_ I add a desktop envioronment.
04:59<amacater>!ubuntu
04:59<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on chat.freenode.net instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.
04:59<amacater>Cant' remember how to get the dpkg bot to give the message that Ubuntu may be off topic here :)
05:01<koleygr>Thanks...
05:01<koleygr>!dinu
05:01<koleygr>not like this lol
05:02<koleygr>!uind
05:05<koleygr>I know that ubuntu is not debian but my question (I think)... was ontopic because it asks if debian's minimal install is the same (compared to ubuntu) ... and the answer is not (thanks for this!)... asnd thus... this is a useful question for the chanel (I suppose)

12:39<Heiki>some X programs, especially many games, prevent activation of the screensaver; is there a way to override this behaviour? (in this case, openttd and Xfce and light-locker, but probably the same for many other combinations as well)
12:39<Heiki>“xset dpms force off” does blank the screen, but only for a second or so
12:43<dtw>Heiki, because your Enter key is still "active" and it turns the screen back on. Try "sleep 1; xset dpms force off".

12:52<TobiX>Heiki: Probably something like this https://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL_DisableScreenSaver is called from the game...
12:54<TobiX>Interestingly, SDL forces screensaver disabling since 2.0.1 and a program has to opt-out of the that bahaviour

13:00<TobiX>openttd still seems to use SDL 1.2, so it won't work for that...

16:32<rwp>That would be a good test but I forget the form of the URL syntax for such things...
16:33<rwp>Probably something like file:///usr/share/sounds/alsa/Rear_Center.wav
16:34<rwp>I am thinking that if evince is calling xdg-open to handle the url and that if xdg-open will produce the same error for you on the command line, then it would be easier to debug what is happening.
16:34<rwp>Of course none of this may apply. There are always so many variations...
16:35<rwp>Debian releases are typically for two years. So on the schedule every two years is a new Stable release. Because that is a good period of time for a Stable release.

16:50<hazaardinari>excuse me?
16:50<jhutchins>hazaardinari: You could tell us what it is.
16:50<rwp>neofetch is cute. I had not heard of it before.
16:50<hazaardinari>oh right
16:50<hazaardinari>i made a pastebin
16:51<hazaardinari>i'm also having problem looking at what i paste in a paste box because of gtk+....
16:51<hazaardinari>can't see shite
16:51<rwp>lolcat adds colors. Okay. Since neofetch already has colors adding it to neofetch seems gratuitous.
16:51<hazaardinari>https://pastebin.com/J1CuVz3n
16:52<kraai>When I boot my system, it displays "Please unlock disk sda5_crypt: Unrecognized metadata device type ."
16:52<hazaardinari>rwp, but never have i ever seen this happen, in arch, deepin, ubuntu, android
16:53<rwp>hazaardinari, I can recreate the problem. It seems that neofetch unconditionally outputs color escape sequences. Then lolcat tried to color the colors.
16:53<kraai>When I enter the correct passphrase, it says "cryptsetup: ERROR: sda5_crypt: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options?"
16:53<rwp>The solution would be to have neofetch not output color escape sequences. Reading the man page...
16:53<jhutchins>hazaardinari: So you're trying to use lolcat to colorize the output, which is already formatted and colorized, and lolcat is (presumably) choking on the ASCII formatting, right?
16:53<kraai>After enough failures, it drops me into the initramfs.
16:54<hazaardinari>but jhutchins it works everywhere else....
16:54<jhutchins>kraai: Sounds like you're going to need that backup you made.
16:55<rwp>hazaardinari, It works elsewhere because elsewhere avoids sending color escape sequences into a pipeline.
16:55<rwp>The problem is neofetch.
16:56<rwp>After a brief read of the neofetch man page I do not see a way to disable escape sequences in the output. I may have missed something.
16:56<kraai>jhutchins: lol
16:56<hazaardinari>wow you're really fast
16:56<jhutchins>Which may be a different version, be running in a different environment, or have different default settings. It will output differently on different distros.

16:56<jhutchins>hazaardinari: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-display-system-information-with-neofetch
16:57<rwp>hazaardinari, Simply put what you want cannot be done with neofetch at this time. You can try this experiment. "neofetch > /tmp/nf.out" and then edit that file with an editor and look at the escape sequences in there.
16:57<rwp>That is what lolcat is working with when it reads that input. Blech! garbage in, garbage out.
16:57<kraai>`cryptsetup open /dev/sda5 sda5_crypt` seems to work; after I enter the right passphrase, /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt exists.

17:03<kraai> /dev/mapper/inspiron--7348--vg-root is a symlink to /dev/dm-1.
