10:50<amacater>That might be the problem - I know I've seen various things saying that that's problematic at the moment. If all else fails, use virtualisation and run Linux there?
10:52<newbi3>But I am able to live boot Debian and ubuntu there. Just the keyboard and touchpad don't work
10:54<amacater>That's a bit of a deal breaker if you actually want to use the Macbook :(
10:55<blast007>possibly related (though it's about the mid-2017 MBP): https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/310290/keyboard-and-touchpad-are-not-working-when-booting-from-live-usb

10:57<blast007>it also sounds like some/all Apple computers with the T2 chip prevent Linux from accessing the internal storage (even when secure boot is turned off)

10:59<newbi3>Isn't it possible to just get rid of the complete OS and start with pure Linux, like happens with all other laptops?
11:00<amacater>No, it's an Apple device - you have to go through hoops to get anything else to do anything
11:00<blast007>from what I've heard, at least with the recent Apple computers, the T2 chip prevents Linux from even seeing the storage
11:00<blast007>the storage device, that is

11:03<blast007>just have to edit the boot command line at the live boot menu
11:04<broken_guitar>yesterday i asked a question about how to make qualcomm atheros QCA9377 rev31 to work, and i finally found the answer
11:04<broken_guitar>it requires certain non-free firmware and binaries
11:05<broken_guitar>all you have to do is download and install debian+nonfree iso
11:06<broken_guitar>then it detects your card automatically. also, some free binaries for this card may already be available at main unstable/testing
11:07<broken_guitar>but i didnt check this possibility. i simply ran the debian+non-free installer
11:07<broken_guitar>so, if anybody is facing the same issue. this is what worked for me ;o)
11:07<amacater>That's always a good option if you're stuck with nonfree drivers: it's worth then installing the appropriate firmware - options to make sure that the firmware is still there on reboot :)
11:08<newbi3>I ran a custom iso which I had updated from stretch-backports with non-free and contrib
11:08<newbi3>still no luck
11:09<newbi3>the 'toram' option allows me to use the mouse :)
11:09<newbi3>thanks blast007
11:10<newbi3>broken_guitar: is there an iso which comes with debian+nonfree readily?
11:10<broken_guitar>i did the same at first. install the all-free iso than installed the non-free firmware and binaries and they just didnt work
11:10<broken_guitar>then i downloaded and installed this iso and it just worked like a charm
11:10<broken_guitar>yeah
11:11<newbi3>Can you share the link please? or do I download the 'full' DVD from the Debian downloads page, does that have everything?
11:11<broken_guitar>it's at getting debian page
11:11<broken_guitar>ill check where it is
11:12<broken_guitar>https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/
11:13<broken_guitar>download the 9.6.0-live+nonfree and make a bootable flash drive to test it first
11:13<newbi3>yup, let me give that a try
11:13<newbi3>thanks broken_guitar
11:13<broken_guitar>if the live version detects all the firmware you need, then you can proceed to make a full installation
11:14<broken_guitar>you're welcome, dude! i'm also new to this haha :o)
11:15<broken_guitar>well... have to sign out now. good luck!

19:45<broseph>Man, systemd is a complicated system. It is cool, though.
19:45<mnuhmnuh>and vast.
19:45<broseph>Much more complicated, though, than rc.d

22:16<ppc64>any folks have a clue about bridge networking ? I have been trying to setup something trivial but always lose all connection to the wworld. I have a single interface enp4s0 and just want a layer 2 bridge created with ip link add bridge0 type bridge
22:16<ppc64>should be trivial ... fails every time .. some little step is wrong here
22:17<ppc64>see https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058844
22:18<ppc64>I end up with all interfaces up and no connection to the world at all .. a default route via 172.16.35.1 dev bridge0 doesn't seem to get me anywhere
22:28<ppc64>test .. is this thing working ?
22:29<dvs>I guess no one knows about bridging right now.
22:29<ppc64>clearly
22:30<ppc64>I guess I just keep hacking away reading man pages
22:50<trysten>ppc64: maybe use bridge-utils to get it working? then work backwards
22:50<ppc64>well ... sort of tried that too
22:50<ppc64>every step is laid out clearly here https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058850
22:51<ppc64>every step makes clear sense ... no errors and yet no packets flow out ever again.
22:51-!-Arcade [~Arcademan@arcade.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Quit.]
22:51<ppc64>However at the last step there is not a default gateway added. However ip route add default via 172.16.35.1 dev bridge0 seems to have no reasonable effect

23:01<rwp>ppc64, Your default route looks incorrect to me.
23:01<ppc64>rwp: ummm? oh ... where ? before or after the hackary ?
23:02<ppc64>looking at https://paste.debian.net/1058850/ which line number ?
23:02<rwp>Here is a working bridging setup route: https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058852
23:02<rwp>As you can see the route is for the bridge not the interface.
23:02<rwp>Which I agree is not intuitive.
23:02<ppc64>yes .. that looks perfect and nicely trivial
23:03<ppc64>okay ... what is your physical interface on that bridge ?
23:03<rwp>Here is the /etc/network/interfaces that created that last paste of mine: https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058853
23:04<ppc64>okay so ... you have bridge_ports eth0 there
23:04<ppc64>okay
23:05<ppc64>no need for spanning tree protocol at all .. okay
23:05<rwp>Oh, I missed copying the first line. Update: https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058854
23:05<rwp>I have never been in a situation where STP helped me. But many cases where it hurt me. :-(

23:06<ppc64>rwp: well I wasn't sure that the STP made a diff or not so I tossed it in and removed it .. repeatedly however it only matters with multiple bridges
23:06<ppc64>PryMar56: we have a working config example https://paste.debian.net/plain/1058854
23:07<ppc64>rwp: so then .. looks like I need to do a reboot and should not need to
23:07<ppc64>rwp: call me old school but a reboot for a trivial network config should never be needed
23:07<rwp>You shouldn't need to reboot. You say it isn't working at all. Just bring the interface down and then back up again with that config.
23:07<ppc64>yep
23:08<ppc64>well .. no .. hold on .. using /etc/network/interfaces will need a systemctl command sequence
23:08<ppc64>how about this : ip link set down enp4s0
23:08<ppc64>then ip addr flush dev enp4s0
23:09<ppc64>that makes the physical enp4s0 essentially out of the picture
23:09<rwp>Sorry. If you are using systemd-networkd then you are blazing your own trail.
23:09<rwp>I think with that you will be good to go. I need to run! TTYL. Good Luck!
23:09<ppc64>ahhhhhh
23:09<ppc64>okay
23:09<ppc64>well .. let me try this out
23:10<ppc64>this is where I may fall off the network
23:11<PryMar56>ppc64, I had it wrong.. you can bridge enp4s0 since its a routed bridge
23:14<ppc64>test
23:14<ppc64>holy crap
23:14<ppc64>I am still running here

23:17<ppc64>I could not even ping the router at 172.16.35.1
23:17<ppc64>this is horrific but I may just edit /etc/network/interfaces and then reboot
23:18<ppc64>I should be able to do all this from the command line and be damned if I can figure out why it won't work

23:23<PryMar56>ppc64, bridge0 needs the IP address, not enps04
23:23<ppc64>yep
23:23<ppc64>got that
23:23<PryMar56>settings for tap0 come after bridge0, I don't see that.. they are before

23:24<ppc64>well ... I think I shall remove the tap0 interface from the equation entirely for now

23:26<ppc64>actually ... I have to reboot just to see what I get from a modified /etc/network/interfaces file ... however won't a systemctl network stop and then start do the same ?
