00:43<rwp>Doctor_Pi, The names of the md* devices are mostly not relavent.
00:44<rwp>Doctor_Pi, More details please? So that we might advise you better?
00:45<Doctor_Pi>So I failed the the various raid components and I removed them from the array. I've now stuck the drive in a new machine and want to copy data off of it.
00:48<Doctor_Pi>The original arrays were raid one, the first component on the first drive and the second component on the second drive.
00:49<Doctor_Pi>metadata is 0.9
00:50<Doctor_Pi>So broke the arrays apart by failing and removing each component on the second drive.
00:51<Doctor_Pi>each raid partition also had lvm2 layered on top.
00:51<rwp>All sounds good so far.
00:52<rwp>You said that one of the devices failed and you removed it. Why isn't the array starting automatically at boot time on the remaining device?
00:52<Doctor_Pi>I'm not using the remaining device.
00:52<rwp>LVM uses GUIDs to identify the PVs. Therefore the md12x names are not significant.
00:53<Doctor_Pi>I've replaced the remaining device.
00:53<rwp>Did you partition it appropriately and mdadm --add it into the array?
00:53<Doctor_Pi>The second drive is not a failed device.
00:55<Doctor_Pi>It just failed and remove the various raid components on it. The I stuck the drive into a new machine and I need to copy the data to the primary drive of that machine.
00:57<rwp>Do you a) wish to rebuild the raid using the new device? Or b) just get the system going with the degraded array so you can copy stuff off to the other drive?
00:58<Doctor_Pi>yeah i just want to start the array in degraded mode so I can copy stuff off of it.
01:00<rwp>Why doesn't it start automatically at boot time? Any errors?
01:01<Doctor_Pi>rwp: one sec
01:02<Doctor_Pi>I don't know why it doesn't start automatically
01:02<Doctor_Pi>let me give one of the error messages.

01:08<Doctor_Pi>"no RAID superblock on /dev/sdb3" is the second line
01:10<Doctor_Pi>And yet in /proc/mdstat I have "md127 : inactive sdb3[0](S)" and some number of blocks on the second line.

21:56<vera>I have a question I'm hoping someone might have some insight to since I haven't been able to find anything with google yet - I'm having an intermittent problem playing youtube videos and an undefined subset of other internet videos, in all browsers. Rebooting or restarting lightdm fixes the problem, but after some time the error will recur.
21:57<vera>Youtube videos get stuck "loading" until a message "if playback doesn't start shortly, restart your device". Other videos such as https://i.imgur.com/bZ2Uy4W.gifv will show exactly two frames and then freeze.

21:59<vera>I have a hybrid graphics card and have blacklisted the nouveau driver for the discrete card and lsmod shows only the intel drivers for the integrated card are loaded. That didn't fix it. Restarting browsers (chrome, firefox, or torbrowser), disabling all addons, disabling hardware acceleration, or using browsers in safe mode doesn't help.
21:59<vera>I'm not a very advanced user so I'm at a loss how to debug this further... and all search results I can find are specific to browser issues. Playing videos in external programs works fine.
22:01<vera>4.19.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.12-1 (2018-12-22) x86_64 GNU/Linux, thinkpad t470p

22:01-!-sidmo__ [~sidmo@00026de1.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:02<vera>yes, I just started having tihs problem about a month ago I think
22:02<vera>Unfortunately I didn't realize it wasn't a browser problem for awhile, so I'm not sure what I upgraded at the time
22:05<sarnold>there's probably dpkg logds in /var/log/dpkg.log* if you want to try looking there.. but at least this gives you a starting point
22:05<sarnold>how about kernels? try booting into previous kernels?
22:05<sarnold>previous browsers?
22:05<vera>I should say, I'm also not exactly sure when the problem started :)
22:05<vera>oh ok, good idea, I'll try booting with an older kernel
22:06<vera>thanks! Now I just have to wait for a few hours to a couple days to see if it recurs...

23:19<nyov>then it *could* be that the video driver fails for some renderers (x11 or whatever the browsers use) but not others (e.g. vlc might use sdl or opengl)
