#debian IRC Logs for 2019-01-09

---Logopened Wed Jan 09 00:00:13 2019
00:03<vera>nyov: yes exactly
00:04<vera>I haven't found anything in dmesg, not that I can decipher all of it, but nothing jumped out as video related... in kern.log there were some nouveau errors which is why I blacklisted that driver, but that wasn't it
00:07<nyov>for me, sometimes after a few weeks my fglrx card runs into issues playing back video through x11/xv (mplayer), which feels similar to your issue. but I can't remember if fixing it required rebooting or only a DM restart
00:08<nyov>which could be an issue with bad memory/RAM, a(nother) memleak in the driver, or some X11 bug. I haven't tried to track *that* one down :P
00:11<nyov>vera: well, unless your system is a kiosk and unattended, it's perhaps easiest to just work-around by restarting the LDM when it occurs.

13:30<jhutchins_wk>rwp: The service command still works and still figures out whether to run an init script or a systemd service.
13:30<rwp>In any case I was simply reacting to a comment from timothywcrane and was mostly in agreement.
13:32<jhutchins_wk>timothywcrane: iirc it was redhat that introduced the "service" command to save admins the trouble of remembering /etc/init.d/<service> syntax, so it will probably stick around for systemctl.
13:33<jhutchins_wk>timothywcrane: I don't recall seeing anything about deprecating it for EL8.
13:33<jhutchins_wk>timothywcrane: (RedHat is pretty much the lead for systemd adoption.)
13:33<rwp>The 'service' command was more about cleaning the environment than syntax. The syntax is basically the same as the init.d scripts. But the environment gets cleaned first.
13:34<rwp>Otherwise the admin's environment leaks into the init daemons environments.

17:26<Tjips>I suspect my USB flash drive is mistakenly being picked up as a keyboard when plugged in via a USB3.0 extension cable. At startup (with flash drive not plugged in) I got a notification that my keyboard's battery is low. My actual keyboard is wired. Now, when I plug my flash drive in nothing shows in "Removable Devices" systray entry, and no extra sdX appears in /dev/. Ideas?
17:27<petn-randall>Tjips: First thing I'd do is check /var/log/kern.log when plugging in the device.

18:10<toad_>What do dashes and double slashes mean in apparmor profiles in aa-status?
18:11<sarnold>hey toad_
18:11<sarnold>dashes are part of the profile name
18:11<toad_>Hello sarnold!
18:12<sarnold>double slashes are used as a 'profile part' separator to separate the main profile from subprofiles or hats
18:12<sarnold>eg /usr/bin/evince//sanitized_helper
18:12<toad_>Yeah, so we can have dashes in a filename, and they end up in the profile name...
18:12<sarnold>the main profile is /usr/bin/evince and there's a subprofile within it named sanitized_helper
18:12<toad_>So it seems to be automatically creating subprofiles... will it use the outer one?
18:13<toad_>/opt/wine-staging/bin/wine//null-/opt/wine-staging/bin/wine-preloader//null-/opt/wine-staging/bin/wine64-preloader//null-/opt/wine-staging-bin/wine64-preloader//null-/opt/wine-staging-bin/wine64-preloader
18:13<toad_>It does seem to break the automatic tools - they don't seem to detect anything - but will it break manually written profiles?
18:14<sarnold>aha, so the //null- bits are fun
18:14<toad_>Hopefully not, because the outer profile should apply, it's just that I can override it more specifically if I want to?
18:14<sarnold>this is because the 'main' profile is in complain mode
18:14<sarnold>and as it executes things, the kernel fakes these things up so that the log messages can say which program accessed things
18:14<sarnold>it gets pretty noisy if it grows too far..
18:15<sarnold>but this is the only way to know how to assign things if you wanted to use Px or Cx or similar for one of the executions in this chain
18:15<toad_>Hmmm#
18:15<toad_>So it's more usable for grepping the logs and writing rules by hand, it just confuses the automatic tools?
18:16<toad_>Related question: does this imply that the outermost policy still applies? Or is it purely by the current executable?
18:16<sarnold>well, in complain mode, in some sense, *nothing* applies.. (almost) all accesses are allowed
18:17<sarnold>there are times when i prefer to do profile development by hand, yes
18:17<sarnold>when the tools work they can be pretty neat
18:17<sarnold>but they don't always work
18:17<toad_>But if I was to run it in enforce mode, it goes away, it's just a logging construct?
18:17<toad_>It applies the profile for the current executable, even though it's been forked a bunch of times...
18:18<sarnold>right
18:19<toad_>n00b question: I can just create a profile in /etc/apparmor.d/ and put multiple profiles in it, it doesn't care?
18:19<toad_>Lots of examples do that - it just basically reads them all separately one at a time?
18:19<sarnold>the parser handles that fine
18:19<sarnold>the other tools handle it with various levels of grace :(
18:20<sarnold>so you may not be able to use aa-complain or aa-enforce to toggle things, but manual edits and so on would keep working
18:20<toad_>What do I do about the existing profile files then?
18:21<toad_>Can I just remove the files?
18:22<sarnold>hmm, what do you mean?
18:25<toad_>Ah, to answer earlier question: execute permissions!
