00:23--- <--- dtrumb [~dtrumb@adsl-64-91-71-140-rb.lax.customer.centurytel.net] has left #linode ()

00:45mega does anyone know what kind of connection theplanet servers get to japan?
00:49npmr got an ip address i can ping?
00:53mega hmm
00:53mega not really, i have a linode box
00:53npmr oh
00:53mega just wondering if anyone did a lot of work with japan, i'm moving there for about 6mo next year
00:53npmr just ping some stuff in japan then
00:53mega i want to upgrade to a linode128.. but then i got to thinking, how good will my connection be?
00:53mega yeah, i guess
00:54npmr run some traceroutes if you're really ambitious
00:54mega i'm feeling ambitious
00:54npmr traceroute it is
00:55npmr about 140ms for me
00:56npmr 165 to another one
00:57npmr 100 from a linode at he
00:57mega darn, sounds like an HE box is better
00:59npmr that's to be expected
00:59npmr it's about 2000 miles closer to japan
00:59mega hehe
00:59mega fair enough
00:59mega 140-165 isn't bad though
00:59npmr dialup users put up with worse
00:59mega hehe, true that
01:00mega heh... hmmm
01:00iggy p2p users put up with much worse
01:00mega i checked a few websites and got about the same results you did, then i tried the city i'll be living in
01:00mega 250-400ms
01:00iggy unless they are using QoS or something
01:00mega pings get about the same
01:01mega 10% packet loss too
01:02--- <--- Newsome [~sorenson@p125.n-nypop14.stsn.com] has left #linode (Leaving)
01:03mega at least I can't fault theplanet... i get 30-40ms till i hop over the pacific
01:08--- <<-- npmr [inkblot@goose.movealong.org] has quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)

02:04Shaun why would your connection change?
02:04mega how do you mean?
02:04Shaun [21:53] <mega> i want to upgrade to a linode128.. but then i got to thinking, how good will my connection be?
02:04mega oh, what i meant was.. if I'm spending 2x the money a month, how good will the connection be since I'll be in Japan
02:05mega I was thinking about a 1yr contract... but not if I get 400ms ping times
02:06mega I moved up to a 96, just because I need the space and ram now
02:09Shaun just because you order a higher package doesnt mean your connection is going to change at all (unless you move you to a diffrent DC which i dont see why they would)
02:09Shaun if you stay in the same dc your connection will be the same as it is now.
02:10mega i wasn't arguing that point, I was saying "what kind of connection will *any* linode to japan"
02:10mega traceroutes and pings are one thing, but i was curious if anyone had done large transfers or anything of the like between japan on a regular basis, that would be give a more accurate idea of what i could expect

16:43JonR i was wondering... i have need of a usenet server. i could install leafnode on my linode, but that requires an upstream usenet server, right?
16:43tjfontaine i do not know the answer to that question
16:44tjfontaine http://www.leafnode.org/faq.html I would assume that has the answer to your question?
16:44JonR hmm, guess it does.
16:45JonR linode hasn't got any sort of usenet server, has it?
16:45tjfontaine I don't know the answer to that question, but since I've not heard otherwise I would say no
