14:03rafx why do i need to shutdown the linode to resize a disk image I don't have mounted or even specified in the active configuration?
14:04SupaDongzu because you're mucking with the partition table
14:06SupaDongzu what happens if you have two partitions: sda1 and sda2
14:06SupaDongzu while running, you resize sda1 to half its original size, and make a new partition between sda1 and sda2
14:06SupaDongzu if you're using sda2, it is now sda3
14:07SupaDongzu there are all sorts of conditions that partition resizing can create
14:07rafx but i'm trying to resize a backup disk that isn't associated with any /dev/*
14:07* SupaDongzu shrugs
14:08SupaDongzu how does it know that?
14:08SupaDongzu the point is that there are a lot of situations you could code the resizers to help with
14:08SupaDongzu but partition resizers are already juggling enough voodoo as it is
14:08SupaDongzu I avoid them like the plague
14:09rafx by looking at the active configuration & time of boot i'm guessing
14:09SupaDongzu the problem is that there are all of these heuristics you could plug in
14:09SupaDongzu and they'd only serve to make people send you angry e-mails about the situations where the heuristics failed them
14:10rafx btw, what are your thoughts on using symbolic links for directories such as /home?
14:10SupaDongzu and this is such a delicate operation
14:10SupaDongzu oh
14:10SupaDongzu I use a symlink for home on my system
14:10SupaDongzu drwxrwsr-x 104 root staff 4096 2004-12-11 19:40 /home/
14:10SupaDongzu lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2004-09-11 13:51 /home -> usr/local/home/
14:11SupaDongzu I have a huge RAID on /usr/local/
14:11--- <<-- Shaun [~ndci@ip68-111-70-41.oc.oc.cox.net] has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
14:11SupaDongzu and I symlink all the major read-write partitions into it
14:12rafx so if i have a disk image on /mnt/shared, it really isn't an issue to /home -> /mnt/shared/home or /var/log -> /mnt/shared/log ?
14:12SupaDongzu I would use relative links myself, but sure
14:13SupaDongzu like /home -> mnt/shared/home/ and /var/log -> ../mnt/shared/log/
14:14rafx oh i see
14:14SupaDongzu that way they work even when you mount your filesystem tree under something else
14:15rafx glad i asked, learning some really neat tricks
14:16rafx how do i safely copy over an existing /var/log to ../mnt/shared/log? mv won't work because files are locked, right?
14:16SupaDongzu yeah, you'll want to shut down syslog first
14:17rafx yea and qmail (since djb likes his own way of logging)
14:17SupaDongzu hahahahaha
14:17SupaDongzu oh boy
14:17SupaDongzu if I were you
14:17SupaDongzu I'd take this system down to single-user mode
14:17SupaDongzu and do it that way
14:18SupaDongzu if you can
14:18rafx good idea
14:18SupaDongzu okay, I'm off to make breakfast
14:18SupaDongzu later
14:18rafx later
14:18rafx thanks for all the help

20:52ref as in, do i just get charge for the portion of the month?
20:52@caker ref: correct
20:52@caker ref: upgrades can usually be configured the same day, depending on availability
