#linode IRC Logs for 2005-01-27

---Logopened Thu Jan 27 00:00:21 2005
00:00SupaDongzu the least you could do is make aliases for ! and !! and !!! and so on
00:00@caker SupaDongzu: that's what you (I) get for suggesting I upgrade
00:00--- ---> npmr [inkblot@goose.movealong.org] has joined #linode
00:00npmr linbot, roulette
00:00@linbot npmr: *click*
00:00SupaDongzu I really hate it when linbot msgs me and says "GOSH I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YU MEAN BY !!!!!!"
00:00@caker I should probably downgrade him
00:01SupaDongzu hahahaha
00:01SupaDongzu nooooo
00:01tierra|h probably actually have seen it about 20 times now... aired it on Defcon Movie Channel, it was one of the small clips we were using during the development of the script would pick filler at random and play it
00:01@caker why?
00:01SupaDongzu you were running a pre-release
00:01@caker this version is buggy
00:03@caker I don't get why they would break infobot/etc and then release the final version
00:03SupaDongzu they don't like infobot
00:04SupaDongzu they like their other factoid modules better
00:04@caker which? megaoid or something?
00:04SupaDongzu no, not moobot
00:04SupaDongzu just one of the others
00:05* caker looks
00:07@caker while I'm bitching, I don't like the new site, either
00:07chris_ What new site?
00:07@caker http://supybot.sourceforge.net
00:07* chris_ isn't following the conversation

03:01jdub re sales/marketing
03:21jasonf jdub: caker is the guru for linode
03:21jdub thanks :)
03:21jasonf but most of us users know a lot about it all, so you might as well ask what you gotta ask
03:21jasonf or post to the forum @ linode.com
03:21jdub it's, er, boring corporate stuff :)
03:21guinea-plow oh no, not another jdub
03:22guinea-plow how many of you ARE there?!
03:22jasonf jdub: I presume it's got something to do with him using your distro in a new distro image he released today?
03:22jdub that was only *today*?

03:23jdub was just chatting to a friend who hosts on linode, she was thinking of requesting a warty image, then it turned out there was one there :)
03:23jasonf what's the question you have?
03:23jdub heh, that's serendipitous :)
03:23jasonf if nothing else, I can tell you if email / forums / irc is the best place to ask it
03:24jdub boring corporate stuff, need a contact within linode
03:24guinea-plow heh
03:24tierra the suggestion popped about a week ago... then caker just up and did it...
03:24guinea-plow you talk like linode is some big corporation
03:24jdub will chat to caker/peer at the website
03:24jasonf caker is the only guy at linode
03:24guinea-plow caker is the MAN
03:24jasonf owner/operator/guru
03:25jdub tierra: much demand for it around the linode community?
03:25tierra don't get anyone wrong, Linode is pretty big, but it's all run by one guy: caker
03:25jasonf he just has an awesome network setup
03:25jasonf a lot of automation
03:25tierra jdub, well, everyone here already has their distro of choice installed, it's mostly for those that need something like linode, and are big on Ubuntu
03:26jasonf I use Debian Sarge :)
03:26jasonf on my linode
03:26jasonf WXP/Debian SID on my desktop
03:26jasonf so I'm related ;)
03:26jdub heh

03:26guinea-plow ooOOoo

03:29jasonf tierra: on the linode forums
03:29jasonf in the announce forum
03:30jdub tierra: one from ubuntu? dude, no one knows; i only found out by chance
03:30jasonf oh, nevermind
03:30tierra (not the one on linode.com)
03:30jdub tierra: so would like to sort out some cross-marketing action with caker ;)
03:30tierra oh... I had heard someone was going to put up an announcement on ubuntuforums.org or ubuntulinux.org
03:31jasonf jdub: I'm like the #3 guy in OpenOffice.org marketing on the US East Coast :-D
03:31guinea-plow oh god, this is dreadfully boring

11:18tizen Hey caker, if I bought my account yesterday. Do I get a new 25gb of transfer on Feb first?
11:18adamg yes
11:20tizen Wow, that's perfect
11:20tizen time to install all the packages :)
11:21@caker 25 GB of packages? :)
11:23npmr that's the entire i386 debian archive
11:23npmr plus some
11:23@caker honestly, why are people even concerned with a local mirror. It's not like pulling updates down during one month uses even a few hundred MB
11:24tizen caker: Well, obviously not
11:24TehDan indeed....
11:24tizen I just meant, i'll get this install done, and I want the box to go live on feb first
11:24tizen that way i get a good idea for how much bandwidth i'll use
11:24@caker tizen: yeah, that wasn't directed at you
11:24npmr yes but a couple hundred MB/user times a couple hundred users is a lot of *your* bandwidth
11:25@caker npmr: good point.
11:25TehDan I made the argument yesterday it obviously doesn't cost you much either tho...
11:25adamg thats the thing you can still debt there banwidth but save your owne
11:26npmr then again, what's 10GB when the combined quotas of all of your users is around 2TB?

11:35ap0ught I still don't know why a user doesn't set a mirror up for public use anyways.
11:37tizen does it not count internal bandwidth?
11:37TehDan the bw to use an external one is cheaper than renting the storage
11:37TehDan even if you consider the cost of bw to all users, I would imagine
11:45rafx maybe the datacenter company would be willing to mirror. they have even more bandwidth savings to realize than just linode so it'll be worth it for them
11:46rafx hurricane might be willing
11:48@caker anything that goes past my switch is accounted as traffic
11:48tizen Debian GNU/Linux 3.1
11:48tizen orion login: root
11:48tizen Login incorrect
11:48tizen you guys ever see that?
11:49TehDan if you've just upgraded to sarge, you won't be able to login to the console as root
11:49tizen ah.
11:49TehDan login as you and su
11:50mikegrb lolz
11:50tizen lol, that sure sucks. I just did the install, then upgrade, didn't make myself an account

11:58adamg another reason for me to get this api finished
11:59* mikegrb replaces adamg with a very simple api
11:59TehDan mysql ports are getting hammered by a new worm (it only infects on windows tho)
11:59mikegrb "Chicken Cord on Blue"
11:59walkah TehDan: i only use unix sockets on that box
12:00TehDan sensible
12:00adamg nothing simple about my api

12:29TehDan by worse you mean better at catching spam?
12:29walkah i currently have SA 3 bringing a (non-linode) box to it's knees almost daily
12:29guinea-pig heh
12:29mikegrb I run spamd and limit it to one instance
12:29guinea-pig mikegrb: same here
12:29walkah mikegrb: ah. maybe limiting it to one instance would help
12:29* walkah uses spamd tho
12:30mikegrb walkah: well depends on number of users
12:30walkah i also run it via amavisd-new on this particular linode that went boom just now
12:30mikegrb walkah: I'm processing for just two users
12:30walkah mikegrb: ah
12:30walkah well, this linode is only processing for about 10
12:30walkah the other box does ~ 100
12:30mikegrb walkah: you could set it to 2 or 3
12:31mikegrb just depends on number of simultaneous messages
12:31walkah *nod*
12:31TehDan each instance can eat 30MB of ram very quickly....
12:32mikegrb probably limit to 4 or 5 for 100 users
12:32mikegrb if an instance isn't free when a message comes in spamc waits for an available thread
12:32mikegrb well the parent spamd thread accepts the tcp connection then blocks spamc until it has an available worker thread
12:36walkah *nod*

13:27tizen Postfix runs in a chroot directory (/var/spool/postfix) and cannot access any files outside that directory. Usually you talk to the MySQL database via its socket file /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock. As you can see this file is out of reach for Postfix. So you can either try to move the socket file (which may lead to other problems) or use TCP networking. The latter means you are talking to MySQL through your network stack.
