10:44<bogdan>hey guys
10:45<bogdan>anyone having problems accessing host20 ?
10:45<bogdan>for about 10-15 minutes it's totally non-responsive
10:45<bogdan>i checked the load and it's pretty high, take a look
10:45<bogdan>http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/1158/host20load9bd.png
10:46<jekil>bogdan: i have the same problem on host 21
10:46<bogdan>the lish console is hardly responding ... i managed to type in "root" in about 3 minutes .. now i'm waiting for it to ask for my password
10:47<bogdan>timed out ..
10:47<bogdan>jekil: since when?
10:47|-|dddd44 [dhb55@60.50.132.128] has joined #linode
10:47<jekil>i on host 21 every day at ~1230 (and now) i get a dos caused to high load
10:48<jekil>a lot, i dont remember
10:48<bogdan>no, i mean today
10:48<bogdan>since about 15 minutes ago?
10:48<fuzzie>generally, when linodes become that unresponsive, it's a problem with them swapping too much and running out of i/o tokens, not a host issue
10:49<bogdan>fuzzie: the lish console (which runs off the host afaik) is behaving the same way
10:50<bogdan>i haven't experienced this kind of unresponsivness until now (i'm not even able to type a command) .. but maybe i haven't accessed my linode at this time
10:50<jekil>fuzzie: my host is ok, and i dont have cron tasks at ~1230
10:50<fuzzie>if you're logging in as root, you'll be using your own linode.
10:50<bogdan>i can't reach my linode
10:51<bogdan>i type root (after waiting about 3 minutes for the user login input to show) then it times out because the password input doesnt show at all
10:51<bogdan>this is on the lish console ... so clearly the host is way too loaed
10:51<bogdan>loaded*
10:51<fuzzie>what part of the lish console?
10:52<fuzzie>i mean, the lish console is just a way to access your linode without ssh.
10:52<bogdan>i know how it works
10:52<bogdan>and i'm telling you i can't login to lish
10:52<fuzzie>so unless you're having problems logging into lish via ssh, which you're presumably not, since you're trying to login as root, which you can only do after you're logged in via ssh
10:53<fuzzie>and obviously the username/password prompts for ssh would be on your local machine, so no problems with input.
10:53<bogdan>have you seen that pic i linked above?
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> hey guys
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> anyone having problems accessing host20 ?
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> for about 10-15 minutes it's totally non-responsive
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> i checked the load and it's pretty high, take a look
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/1158/host20load9bd.png
10:53<bogdan><jekil> bogdan: i have the same problem on host 21
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> the lish console is hardly responding ... i managed to type in "root" in about 3 minutes .. now i'm waiting for it to ask for my password
10:53<bogdan><bogdan> timed out ..
10:53<bogdan>oops
10:53<fuzzie>the picture says medium host load.
10:53<fuzzie>which is completely irrelevant.
10:53<bogdan>"medium", yeah .. but the bar is pretty long, never seen it that long
10:54<fuzzie>i've seen it all the way up on hosts, and it hasn't caused any real problems
10:54<bogdan>and lish is totally unresponsive, nor is my linode .. and i was logged on it
10:54<fuzzie>it's a very inacccurate indicator anyway
10:54<bogdan>true, i know .. i just havent seen it that high until now
10:54<fuzzie>but, if you're sure it's not a problem with your linode, all you can do is wait for mikegrb to reappear, or file a ticket
10:55<bogdan>it's not my linode, im ultra-sure ... i was logged on it directly via ssh when it suddenly stopped taking commands
10:55<bogdan>it echoed back commands after about 1-2 minutes
10:55<bogdan>it's been doing that for about 15 minutes now
10:56<bogdan>i'll try rebooting my linode but i fear that wil take hours ...
10:57<bogdan>thanks for the tips anyway
10:57<bogdan>i was curious if anyone else here was on host20 to check the behavior

18:02<JasonWoof>I'm considering getting a linode account (or two), and have a few questions.
18:02<JasonWoof>first, is there a way to see text that is output to the root terminal though the website or something?
18:03<JasonWoof>just trying to get a feel for what it would be like to try to diagnose issues with my image not booting
18:03<JasonWoof>seccond, is it possible to increase my allotment of diskspace without reinstalling the OS?
18:03<@caker>JasonWoof: you can see the complete boot messages via the Lish console
18:03<JasonWoof>awesome :)
18:03<@caker>JasonWoof: yes, you can resize disk images
18:04<rafx>is the process of buying/receiving extra RAM automated? ie no need to wait for linode staff to manually do something?
18:04<JasonWoof>third, can I get one linode in one of your hosting facilities, and one in the other? (I understand there's one in TX and one in CA)
18:04<@caker>JasonWoof: http://www.linode.com/wiki/index.php/Lish_Documentation
18:05<@caker>rafx: you can add RAM, disk space, and extra xfer ala carte automatically, yes
18:05<@caker>rafx: but, if you want to move up to the next Linode plan, you'll need to send us a ticket, but you can make the move when you're ready
18:05<JasonWoof>caker: wow, lish looks very cool
18:06<@caker>JasonWoof: you can ask after the account has been activated to make sure it's in once DC or the other, just ask us first if there is availability for what you're after
18:07<rafx>JasonWoof: lish is very cool. i love being able to connect to console even when my linode's sshd is down.
18:07<JasonWoof>caker: so it's possible to move my image from one DC to another?
18:07<@caker>JasonWoof: yeah. But, a migration takes 0 seconds when there's no disk images to move
18:07<JasonWoof>rafx: that sounds very comforting indeed :)
18:08<JasonWoof>caker: :)
18:08<@caker>JasonWoof: otherwise, it'll take a few minutes per gig to transfer cross-dc
18:08<rafx>i once used lish to fix my linodes bootup scripts after introducing a typo. didn't have to rely on support staff at all
18:09<JasonWoof>rafx: beautiful
18:09<JasonWoof>caker: ok, that's quite acceptable
18:09<@caker>http://www.theshore.net/~caker/uml/old/screenlog.1 <-- example of UML's kernel messages, up to where init would take over (ignore the panic)
18:10<JasonWoof>cool
18:12<JasonWoof>ok, now I just gotta wait until I have a bunch of time and a few bucks.
18:25<rafx>on a linode 120, whats a reasonable tcp rate limit/sec and burst when hosting apache2 web server with mostly static content?
18:26<rafx>i'm using shorewall 2.2.3 and wondering what to set for LIMIT:BURST in the policy file. i saw an example somewhere using 10/sec:40 but I don't know if that is appropriate for linode 120 hosting a public web server
