05:50<ftc>i just created a new debian linode, i noticed that the debian version is 6.0.3, is there any reason that i shouldn't update to 6.0.6? or should i leave it as is?
05:50<chesty>upgrade
05:51<ftc>ok then. i assume then that the only reason it's 6.0.3 is that they haven't got around to creating a new image?
05:51<chesty>exactly
05:52<ftc>ok cool
05:52<ftc>thanks
05:53<chesty>upgrade often, I update once a dat
05:53<chesty>day

05:57<chesty>updating within a release shouldn't break anything, and it's better than being broken into
05:59<chesty>linux desktops for example usually have an auto update feature
06:00<chesty>servers can too, but it's off by default
06:02<ftc>yeah auto on a server seems a bit of a bad idea. was working at a place once where the main windows domain server automatically updated itself in the middle of the day with broken network drivers. that was fun.

06:56<ftc>anyone got any idea what that's there for? there's no user called "t" or anything
06:58<chesty>weird, it might be a bug in the image, change it to your main user
06:59<ftc>hmm yeah, someone in #debian said it might have been the install user or something

11:34<s99>How does one reconcile, for an SSL website, both IPv6 and IPv4 support with not requiring SNI support?
11:35<hawk>s99: ipv4 or ipv6 doesn't matter
11:35<s99>I already have in place SSL sites. One certificate for each site. And one separate IP-based vhost for each of those sites. (And no other site using that IP.)
11:35<hawk>s99: The only thing that matters is that the name in the certificate matters the name the client requested.
11:35<s99>Currently the vhosts are IP-based, using the IPv4 address
11:35<s99>hmm ok
11:36<s99>So how would <VirtualHost 1.2.3.4:80> (which I just redirect to the 443 one with mod_rewrite) and <VirtualHost 1.2.3.4:443> change?
11:37<hawk>s99: IP addresses are not a factor except that to deal with legacy clients (not SNI-aware) you need a unique IP:port combination per certificate as you have no idea which certificate to present otherwise
11:37<s99>can I boil the IPv6 address into them?
11:37<XReaper>s99: for ipv6 you ask for a /116 in a ticket
11:37<XReaper>and add some addresses out of the pool and use those :)

11:50<s99>Do I have to worry about pools for now though? I just create a new exact duplicate of my old IPv4 IP-based VirtualHost, but replace the IPv4 address with the IPv6 address, and I'm off to go, right?
11:50<s99>s/off/good
11:52<hawk>s99: If you have to deal with legacy clients and have multiple sites you'll need multiple addresses, though. I think that's where the pool addresses entered the picture
11:53<s99>hawk: yes I already have a few SSL sites. each with its own IPv4 address (and corresponding VirtualHost), to support non-SNI
11:53<s99>but it's still a single ipv6 address per site, isn't it
11:53<s99>i.e., i make a duplicate of all of my vhosts, corresponding to the new ipv6 ones
11:53<s99>or what
11:54<XReaper>each linode only gets one ipv6 ip
11:55<XReaper>you can request an additional /116 pool or a /64 or /56 (the larger ones need to be routed to an ip and can only be upped on a single node)
11:57<hawk>s99: Yes, a single address per site, which with multiple sites means multiple addresses

12:02<kuzetsa>?
12:02<kuzetsa>I'm confused by the way it's written
12:02<s99>Oh, I also have /64. Does that mean I can just start using all of those zillion IPv6 addresses that are pointing to my node?
12:03<XReaper>kuzetsa: if it's a fully qualified ipv6 address, it will be quite clear
12:03<hawk>kuzetsa: It's just that they specify the netmask essentially
12:03<hawk>kuzetsa: Just like they do for the ipv4 address

12:05<s99>xxxx:xxxx::xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx/64
12:05<s99>that's the form
12:05<s99>notice the ::
12:05<hawk>Yes, after you request the pool you will have a "public ip pools" section
12:05<s99>hmm
12:05<XReaper>s99: for a pool it would be ::/64
12:05<XReaper>at the end
12:06<hawk>XReaper: wut?
12:06<XReaper>hawk: ... like this 2400:8900:e001:0500::/56
12:06<s99>A genuine IPv6 address has 8 groups. Mine just has 7 groups (one of them empty).
12:06<s99>how come
12:06<XReaper>s99: the :: is just :0:
12:06<hawk>XReaper: I guess it could be, but most of the /116:s will not end with all zeroes
12:07<XReaper>hawk: yeah, a /116 is a range of single addresses
12:07<hawk>XReaper: Yeah, but it's you who said it would end with ::/64 in the listing
12:08<XReaper>he was asking if he had a /64 (misinterpreted the address format)
12:08<XReaper>in terms of a /64 pool
12:09<s99>So given that :: is just :0000:, I have xxxx:xxxx:0000:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx/64 Why is this a single IPv6 address? It has only 7 groups. Isn't this a pool?
12:09<XReaper>it is :0: not :0000:
12:10<s99>oh
12:10<XReaper>just a shorthand way of writing out ipv6 addresses :)
12:10<rnowak>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6#Address_format
12:10<Nivex>:: isn't necessarily just :0: It can be any number of zeroes needed to pad the address to 128 bits
12:10<hawk>XReaper: Not sure if the routed subnets should be referred to as "pools", though that was for these /116:s that you can just bring up willy nilly...? But maybe Linode do so?
12:10<rnowak>blind leading the blind
12:11<s99>rnowak: glad you came
12:11<Nivex>eg ::1 -> 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1

12:11<XReaper>hawk: right

12:12<Nivex>Linode's pools are equivalences to /112, but they are taken from the /64 the node happens to be in
12:12<rnowak>hawk already answered that, and Nivex said specifically what :: can be

12:15<Nivex>s99: because that is the netmask of the segment you are on
12:15<hawk>s99: You need to know the netmask
12:15<XReaper>s99: your linode automatically grabs the ip from the /64

15:43<s99>Okay, so I've obtained an aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:aaaa::/64 block, and it's now routed to my default IPv6 address (that I got initially).
15:43<s99>So my question is
15:43<rnowak>if you need hand holding, perhaps running a lower entry-barrier distro may be of preference

15:44<rnowak>then you should know what to do
15:44<kuzetsa>I do
15:44<kuzetsa>I'm just annoyed that I have to do it
15:45<s99>Are all the IPs I have available as good as any other? For instance, would you for some reason recommend me against using the addresses aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:0000:0000:0000:0000, aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:0000:0000:0000:0001, aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:0000:0000:0000:0002, and aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:aaaa:0000:0000:0000:0003 for four of my nodes?
15:46<kuzetsa>basically, I can't use this: http://gpo.zugaina.org/sys-kernel/linode-sources
