03:18<Eugene>Feature Request: get an EV cert for linode.com
03:18<dcraig>site is already too green
03:18<Eugene>Hulk out
03:18<Eugene>And HSTS! Gotta have HSTS.
03:21<kyhwana>and hpkp!
03:21<Eugene>That one I'm not as sold on
03:21<Eugene>Mostly because it's still in draft
03:22<Cromulent>heh chrome says that linode.com uses obsolete cryptography
03:22<Zimsky>so does your FACE
03:22<Eugene>ssllabs only gives it an A
03:22<Cromulent>I like the way chrome is pushing websites to update their SSL settings
03:22<Eugene>The SHA1 obsoletion?
03:22<Cromulent>well TLS I guess now
03:23<Cromulent>Eugene: that is another thing they are doing
03:23<Cromulent>the fact that my bank is also using obsolete cryptography is something I am more worried about
03:24<Zimsky>someone was saying "but if the code for openssl is public, doesn't that mean anyone can decrypt things encrypted with it"
03:24<Eugene>Apparently itvends.com is also using obsolete cryptograph. :-|
03:24<Eugene>I'd like to know what exactly Chrome thinks isn't obsolete
03:24<Eugene>SSL/TLS is such a damned hard thing to get right
03:24<Cromulent>Eugene: forward secrecy and eliptic curve cryptography
03:24<Eugene>:-/
03:25<Eugene>I don't even know how to do ECC with nginx
03:25<Eugene>Or would that be for the SSL cert itself?
03:25<Cromulent>Eugene: nope it is an OpenSSL command in nginx.conf
03:25<dcraig>IT VENDS! modern cryptography
03:25<Eugene>Do tell me more
03:26<Cromulent>Eugene: this should get you started ssl_ciphers "EECDH+ECDSA+AESGCM EECDH+aRSA+AESGCM EECDH+ECDSA+SHA384 EECDH+ECDSA+SHA256 EECDH+aRSA+SHA384 EECDH+aRSA+SHA256 EECDH+aRSA+RC4 EECDH EDH+aRSA RC4 !aNULL !eNULL !LOW !3DES !MD5 !EXP !PSK !SRP !DSS";
03:26*Eugene gives it a shot
03:26<Cromulent>need some tweaking
03:26<Cromulent>needs*
03:27<Cromulent>Eugene: nope my mistake EECDH+ECDSA+AESGCM EECDH+aRSA+AESGCM EECDH+ECDSA+SHA384 EECDH+ECDSA+SHA256 EECDH+aRSA+SHA384 EECDH+aRSA+SHA256 EECDH+aRSA+RC4 EECDH EDH+aRSA RC4 !aNULL !eNULL !LOW !3DES !MD5 !EXP !PSK !SRP !DSS !RC4
03:27<Eugene>For reference, I'm currently using: #"EECDH+AES256:RSA+AES256:EECDH+AES128:RSA+AES128:EECDH+3DES:RSA+3DES:!MD5"
03:27<Cromulent>Eugene: yeah you have 3DES in there and you haven't disabled RC4
03:28<Eugene>I based this off of the Cloudflare recommendations github thingy
03:28<Cromulent>Eugene: i got this from qualsys who do the ssllabs thing
03:28<Cromulent>Eugene: https://community.qualys.com/blogs/securitylabs/2013/08/05/configuring-apache-nginx-and-openssl-for-forward-secrecy
03:29<Eugene>That blog post is familiar, but it seems to change regularly.
03:29<Cromulent>Eugene: you could go even further than that these days
03:29<Eugene>As far as even do much more like?
03:29<Cromulent>wha?
03:30<Eugene>http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/has-anyone-really-been-far-even-as-decided-to-use-even-go-want-to-do-look-more-like
03:30<Eugene>Anyway.... copy-pasted in that line, and now I get an A+ in SSLLabs.... and "modern cryptography" per Chrome.

03:32<Cromulent>domain name is secret :P
03:33<Eugene>Eh?
03:34<Cromulent>Eugene: sorry was just wondering why you didn't just post a link to the results rather than a screen shot and guessed it was because you didn't want me to know your domain name
03:34<Eugene>No, it's because ssllabs usually makes you sit while it re-retests
03:34<Eugene>While a screenshot gives it instantly
03:34<Cromulent>Eugene: it caches results for a while
03:34<dcraig>the domain name is in the URL box !
03:34*Eugene shrugs
03:35<Cromulent>dcraig: doh didn't see that - not that it matters anyway
03:35<dcraig>go vend yourself something
03:36<AnTieViL5>hello could i get a server ip for one of the servers im wanting to host my own server but i want to know what my ping rate is to the server.
03:37<Cromulent>Eugene: this is just a guess but have you tried to generate a 2048 bit diffe hellman file?
03:37<AnTieViL5>well i would like to rent a server through linode but i need to know the ping rate i get first
03:37<Eugene>I'm not specifying a DH, no.
03:37<arlen>!speed

03:37<arlen>there you go AnTieViL5
03:37<AnTieViL5>ok ill try that thanks
03:38<Cromulent>Eugene: just a guess it might help it might not
03:38<Eugene>Worth a go.
03:38<Eugene>The keys are 4096, so should probably use that length
03:38<Cromulent>I tried a 4096 bit file but gave up after it took ages
03:38<arlen>the cloudflare cipher was updated recently
03:38<arlen>worth checking again

03:40<arlen>probably skip chacha
03:40<arlen>unless you patch openssl
03:40<Eugene>Just using the CentOS 7 defaults, so no.
03:42<Eugene>Woo. No more WEAKs in ssllabs, and "modern crypto".
03:42<Eugene>Any particular reason on chacha?
03:42<arlen>more efficient for mobile
03:42<Eugene>I mean to skip
03:42<arlen>it's not in normal openssl
03:42<Eugene>Because my openssl doesn't have... yeah.
03:42<Cromulent>I tend to trust any cryptography that OpenBSD supports
03:43<Eugene>Eh, shouldn't hurt anything to have it in, right? openssl will just not have it, and thus skip.
03:43<Cromulent>they know more about these things than I do
03:43<Eugene>I also lean on OpenBSD & family.
03:43<arlen>sure
03:52<Eugene>I'm trying to decide if getting EV certs is worth the StartSSL cost
03:53<Eugene>I'd want it on..... 5 domains, so $400/2 years.

11:05<Windriver>Good morning linode folks. I've been experiencing some odd mysql cpu spikes recently, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for tracking which queries are eating cpu? There doesn't appear to be a pattern to the spikes, they happen randomly and briefly, then the system goes back to normal for awhile.
11:07<Windriver>I've reviewed my traffic logs, and i'm not seeing any unusual/spikes in traffic when the cpu climbs. In fact, the mysql usage charts in longview don't appear to spike when the cpu does either. Haven't been able to track a pattern to the madness. Unless mysql does some sort of background functions randomly, that might cause spikes? Spikes can last up to 90 seconds, reaching 40-50% cpu (normal 5-10%)

11:08<tonyyarusso>Windriver: I know MySQL lets you log long-running queries - that might help.

11:09<Windriver>tonyyarusso: I do have the slow query log running and monitoring for anything like that, but my longest query wait time is 0.03s
11:10<tonyyarusso>hrm
11:10<tonyyarusso>When you say "mysql cpu spikes", do you just mean CPU spikes on your MySQL server, or have you actual confirmed MySQL as the offending process, eg in top?
11:11<Windriver>Both longview and top show its mysql thats eating the cpu, apache and everything else are running smoothly
11:12<Windriver>I did get a big burst of traffic to my site for the past 2 weeks thanks to a high trending tumblr post, so im seeing about 10x as much traffic as normal. Still, the site runs smoothly -most- of the time, trying to track the troublemaker to prevent any future issues. Here's an idea of what I mean by spike: http://odin.magicite.net/mysql-spike.png / http://odin.magicite.net/cpu-spikes.png
11:13<Windriver>as you can see in the longview screenshot, the query usage doesn't really align with the cpu spikes

21:50<Mooney>I'm considering getting a Linode VPS but I've got a question about the network speed first if anyone wants to help me out.
21:50<Ikaros>Ask away.
21:51<Mooney>They say 125/250/500mb/s etc etc. Is that spread across the node or is that a steady connection?
21:52<arlen>that's your outbound speed limit
21:53<Mooney>I realize that, but is that a steady connection or will it usually be closer to 10 like some other hosts?
21:53<arlen>they don't lie
21:54<internat>ive always found that the bottle neck was at the other end ;)
21:54<arlen>will you be able to achieve that speed? probably not because internet
21:54<Ikaros>But odds are you can utilize a very large portion of it at maximum.

23:48<alanrbryant>thanks
23:48<alanrbryant>I will
23:49<akerl>backing up secret keys seems like a bad idea
23:49<kyhwana>akerl: well, what's worse, losing them and losing access to the account or backing them up somewhere secure/encrypted?
23:50<Eugene>Just store them in the butt
23:51<akerl>False dichotomy. This is why scratch codes exist: to allow you to store a one-time-use backup code rather than the secret from which codes can be generated at will
23:51<Eugene>Unfortunately not every 2FA implementation supports scratch codes
23:52<curby>is anyone having trouble staying logged into the manager? i can log in, but when i click on the name of my linode, i get logged out immediately
23:52<akerl>Thankfully most of them do. For things that don't, you get to do the fun tradeoff dance, which is going to depend on how they want you to verify that you're you in absence of codes
23:52<akerl>curby: Are you using a proxy of some kind to hit the Manager?
23:52<curby>nope
23:52<Eugene>Amazon is one that notably doesn't support it
23:53<akerl>Is your local network dual-stack?
23:53<curby>i think i'm ipv4 only
23:53<curby>my router has no ipv6 address afaik
23:53<akerl>Interesting. The most common cause of getting bumped from the Manager is if your IP is changing in between requests
23:55<curby>it's also not asking me for my 2fa code, but that might be based on browser cookie rather than client ip
