01:20<Cromulent>does anyone run a mumble server on their Linode? If so how many concurrent users do you think a $10 linode would be able to handle?
01:21<@jfred>I do run a mumble server on mine, but I haven't stress tested it
01:21-!-seanh-corona [~Adium@2601:646:8201:b7f0:8063:dda4:7a57:9ff8] has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
01:21<Cromulent>ah OK - should be cool with about 20 users though?
01:21<@jfred>that said, speex and opus don't require much bandwidth at all for speech
01:21<@jfred>I don't think 20 users would be a problem at all
01:22<Cromulent>ok cool - I'll set it up and see how it goes - if I remember correctly you can configure the server to change the max quality allowed and thus bandwidth used - is that correct?
01:22<gparent>I think so
01:22<Cromulent>sweet
01:22<gparent>[2:13:51 AM] Server maximum network bandwidth is only 72 kbit/s. Audio quality auto-adjusted to 43 kbit/s (10 ms)
01:23<Cromulent>the reason I ask is I want to start a public mumble server for a game I play
01:26<gparent>and for what it's worth, mumble seems to work just fine on VPS
01:26<gparent>might be obvious to say but if you never tried it :P
01:31<Cromulent>yeah well it was either running my own server on a VPS or paying another company for a "managed" mumble server with limited slots and I didn't particularly want to do that I prefer to configure things myself even if $10 a month is a bit more expensive than a managed provider

08:09<Gang>Hello there?
08:10<Gang>Can't access my Linode via ssh client, any help?
08:12<Gang>hello?
08:12<DrJ>gang: have you tried lish?
08:13<Gang>Yes, I tried Lish
08:14<Gang>They said it was filesystem errors
08:14<DrJ>then you will probably either need to reboot the linode (maybe it is frozen) or open a ticket
08:15<Gang>Same thing happened last month
08:16<Gang>May have to rebuild my Linode. Is there any way to backup the websites in this situation?
08:19<Gang>When reboot normally, in Lish it says The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. keys:Continue to wait, or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery
08:20<Gang>But when I press M, nothing happens
08:26<DrJ>you should already be doing backups
08:27<DrJ>linode offers a pretty good backup system which costs a few dollars depending on your plan level
08:27<DrJ>I also backup to my home server everynight with rsync, only copying files that were changed
08:28<laser`>Gang: Try booting it using Finnix and see if you can get anything off it: https://www.linode.com/docs/troubleshooting/rescue-and-rebuild
08:29<DrJ>one really good reason to use linode's backups system though is because in the case of disaster you can get back up much more quickly. For example, with my upload speeds it would probably take me 12+ hours to recover fully from home backup
08:29<DrJ>I use my home backups more for recovering single files when needed
08:29<Gang>OK man, I just bought my Linode last month
08:29<DrJ>you on the $10 plan?
08:30<DrJ>if so the backup service is only $2.50 extra
08:30<Gang>$20
08:30<DrJ>then $5
08:31<Gang>But I can't back it up right now
08:31<DrJ>I know, just saying
08:31<DrJ>you waited too long :)
08:32<DrJ>anyways, I would boot into finnix
08:32<DrJ>like laser said
08:32<DrJ>maybe create a new linode and rsync the home directory to the new linode from finnix
08:32<DrJ>and just start fresh
08:32<DrJ>hopefully the home directory isn't corrupted
08:33<Gang>Just cancelled my vps with another host, then I can't access my Linode. All my data is here. nightmare
08:34<synapt>hit up the support tickets
08:34<synapt>they respond fairly quickly generally
08:34<Gang>Already do that
08:34<Gang>Only to find I have to rebuild it
08:35<synapt>o_O
08:35<synapt>what in the world did you do to it
08:37<Gang>it appears that the disk is corrupted. the same thing happened last month, when I had a backup with another host
08:37<Gang>Sadly, no backup this time..
08:38<DrJ>Gang, hard to have sympathy for you since you had no backups... harsh, but so.
08:38<laser`>The error message above doesn't necessarily indicate corruption, it indicates that either your mount points are wrong, or you're using a custom kernel with the wrong init line or something...
08:38<DrJ>although odds are you will be able to recover your data with finnix
08:41<Gang>Thank you for the point. You mean the Rescue Mode? How could I do to recover the websites files?
08:43<synapt>two disk corruptions in two months time seems exceptionally unlikely, even if across two hosts

14:59<Terabyte>thanks Peng
15:00<Terabyte>and yes it's on the API
15:02<Terabyte>unrelated, is there a convention that says that /dev/xvdb is swap disk, or if not, how does the OS know which disk is swap? (does it just automatically detect a swap FS and use it as such), the root device is configurable, but nothing seems to identify the swap disk as special...

16:43<greg_js>Seem to unable to setup remote access to my Ubuntu 15.4 MySQL server even after adding bind-address = xx.xx.xx.xxx
16:43<akerl>greg_js: I'd highly recommend not doing that
16:44<akerl>Exposing your database over the internet is a really great way to get your database compromised
16:45<akerl>If you want to connect to it from your local system, SSH tunnels are your friend, and most modern MySQL clients support them. If you're trying to connect from other *servers*, stunnel or similar are great
16:45<greg_js>The whole point is that phpMyAdmin is terrible for development
16:45<akerl>Yes, phpmyadmin is terrible in general
16:45<greg_js>The idea is to disable remote access after dev.

18:53<orvtech>Friends, I lost the device that had my 2FA codes associated with it, what would be the procedure to have linode disable 2FA for my account?
18:54<dwfreed>orvtech: send them an email
18:55<orvtech>dwfreed, do you know if they have an SLA for answering them in a period of time?
18:55<dwfreed>they don't, but they try to respond to all emails as quickly as possible
18:55<orvtech>ack'd
18:55<orvtech>thank you
18:55<dwfreed>if you haven't heard from them in a while, might be worthwhile to poke them with a phone call
18:57<Kyhwana>orvtech: no backup codes?
18:58<dcraig>is it still possible to bypass 2FA with the API?
18:58<dwfreed>dcraig: neg
18:58<dcraig>that's exciting
18:58<dcraig>maybe I'll turn it back on again
18:58<dwfreed>user.getapikey requires a 2fa code if you have 2fa enabled
18:59<dwfreed>also you can have multiple API keys and set key expirations
19:18<dcraig>neat

22:06<zifnab>anyone know why 'df -h' would be timing out
22:06<zifnab>timing out, as in, not doing anythign :(
22:06<akerl>strace would probably know
22:06<zifnab>oh it does, thanks :)
22:06<zifnab>nfs died
22:07<zifnab>so better question :) how does one force-unmount an NFS share
22:07<akerl>umount -f ?

22:07<zifnab>nada
22:07<zifnab>lazy also fails
22:08<zifnab>its nfs! it can't be easy
22:08<akerl>Though restarting the nfs kernel server or whatever would probably also be worthwhile
22:08<zifnab>well it'll come back as soon as that server is unpacked
22:08<zifnab>its in a box
22:08<akerl>?
22:08<zifnab>er, i moved

22:09<zifnab>the server my linode is NFS'ing to is physically in a box
22:09<zifnab>as in, 'remote died, folder still there, but i can't do anything cuz i'm nfs and i'm not expecting network problems, ever'
22:13<zifnab>there we go, umount.nfs4 -f /path
