00:45<Chutt>"Hi, I can't change the contrast on my pvr-250, how can i fix this?"
00:45<Chutt>"the driver doesn't do it"
00:45<Chutt>"so how do i change the contrast?"
00:45<Chutt>i really should just unsubscribe from the mailing lists
00:49<thor_>"Is anyone working on a driver to get more than 480 lines of resolution"
00:49<poptix>heh
00:49<thor_>"I'd really like to get HD out of my cable and onto my 26 year old b&w tv"
00:49<poptix>Chutt: i found my problem with the xinerama stuff
00:50<poptix>Chutt: basicly, the setting only works for the actual video output
00:50<Chutt>hrm
00:50<Chutt>it should work for the other windows
00:50<poptix>well, it'll work for child windows of the video
00:50<poptix>ie, the EPG
00:50<Chutt>the epg isn't a child window of the video
00:51<poptix>hmm
00:51<Chutt>it's a independent top level window just like everything else
00:51<thor_>but maybe not themed yet?
00:51<poptix>well, when i start mythfrontend, it always goes to the first xinerama display
00:51<thor_>ie. under more QT control
00:51<thor_>just a thought
00:51<poptix>when i select 'watch TV' or watch recorded, the video (and info and epg and whatnot after that) go to the selected xinerama display in the general config
00:52<poptix>but the initial menus and whatnot are always on the first display.
00:52<thor_>mythfrontend -display 0:1 ?
00:53<thor_>or however that works for xinerama
00:53<poptix>erm, correction
00:53<Chutt>xinerama's one big screen
00:53<poptix>_only_ the video is going to the selected xinerama screen
00:53<poptix>the EPG is not
00:53<Chutt>it's an absolutely crappy hack, too
00:53<thor_>I'm making no sense ... should go to bed
00:54<poptix>when the EPG pops up, it goes back to the first screen, and displays the video in the preview window
00:54<poptix>(and the video freezes in the selected xinerama display)
00:55<poptix>i did find out why it wouldn't stretch across all available displays
00:57<thor_>Chutt, you're going to like this
00:58<Chutt>hm?
00:58<thor_>all available tracks (music, playlists, the whole tree) navigable in the playback window
00:58<thor_>left right up down
00:58<thor_>very nice
00:58<Chutt>eh
00:58<Chutt>i dunno
00:58<Chutt>have to see it.
00:58<thor_>yup
00:58<thor_>tomorrow
00:58<thor_>sleep
01:00<Chutt>i don't _want_ to have everything shown in the playback window
01:00<Chutt>i just want what's going to be playing
01:00<Chutt>the rest is excessive

13:32<rkulagow>chutt: are you here?
13:37<Chutt>mostly
13:39<rkulagow>i've got another hang-type bug; this is with CVS mythfrontend. if you have an (apparently) damaged file (in this case, i think the mythbackend crashed during the encode) and you're fast forwarding and then hit ESC in the fast forward, mythfrontend returns to the "select a recording" screen, except none of the show information is actually in there; just the frame. have to go to a console and kill mythfrontend.
13:39<rkulagow>on a good MPEG2 file, hitting ESC during fast forward brings up the "save position, keep watching, etc" dialog
13:39<Chutt>hmm
13:40<Chutt>could you run it in gdb, get it to hang like that, then hit ctl-c and do the backtrace stuff?
13:40<rkulagow>i'll try again. i'm using blackbox; don't know if i can get focus to go back to the gdb window when this happens.
13:40<rkulagow>brb
13:41<Chutt>you can try running gdb (and mythfrontend) from an actual console
13:41<Chutt>just set the display to the running x server
13:44<rkulagow>right, i'm going to do that. of course, didn't compile with debugging, so i just got that started.

13:45<rkulagow>it's only a p3-533, so it's going to take a while.

15:16<mdz>probably not
15:16<mdz>either the stack is corrupt or your gdb is broken
15:19<rkulagow>well, in that case i'll move onto the next problem. (crappy looking fonts that look like bitmapped or something)
15:19<Timon>rkulagow: What flavor of linux you using?
15:20<rkulagow>timon: this is mandrake cooker that i've put onto a new box. fonts in eterm look fine; the fonts in Myth look terrible.
15:20<Timon>cooker, is that 9.1?
15:21<Timon>I had problem with Mandrake 9.0 and gdb. It kept telling me there was no symbol table. I had to upgrade to the latest gdb and it worked fine then.
15:24<rkulagow>cooker is pre-9.2
15:24<rkulagow>i wouldn't be surprised if it's broken.
15:31<poptix>i got my netbooting mythtv frontend working

15:32<Timon>poptix: You mean like bootp?
15:33<poptix>yes
15:33<Timon>Really? Thats sweet
15:33<Timon>You should post a howto
15:33<poptix>my SiS 735 based motherboards have a 'boot from network option', like many other systems
15:33<Timon>sweet
15:33<poptix>i hit that, it grabs the kernel, then it boots and mount / over nfs
15:33<Timon>All my nic's require the rom chip to do boot from network (Except my intel card)
15:33<Timon>sweet
15:35<poptix>no hard drive makes it a lot less noisy
15:35<poptix>and decreases the amount of active cooling needed

15:52<mdz>my motherboard has a network boot option, but it uses some crazy novell protocol I couldn't find a server for
15:52<mdz>I just use a floppy with grub on it
15:52<mdz>my myth box has been diskless from the start
15:55<rkulagow>mdz, poptix, would you be willing to share so that i can add something to the howto?
15:55<moegreen>damn imdb.com
15:58<poptix>mdz: PXE?
15:59<mdz>poptix: "Novell Netware Ready Firmware"
15:59<poptix>oh, ick
15:59<poptix>stick with the floppy =)
16:00<mdz>yep
16:00<rkulagow>hrmm. curious. fonts when X resolution is 640x480 look terrible. when X resolution is 800x600, they look nice. i wonder why it isn't scaling correctly.
16:00<mdz>rkulagow: there are plenty of howtos for building a diskless system
16:00<mdz>there's nothing specific about mythtv in the setup
16:00<poptix>rkulagow: it's actually quite easy
16:00<poptix>rkulagow: i made this setup with a base redhat install
16:00<poptix>recompiled the kernel to support nfs root fs
16:00<poptix>then just copied / to the nfs server
16:01<rkulagow>right, but the HOWTO is 90% me taking other people's work, not me working it out on my own. =)
16:01<rkulagow>i'll poke around, but i don't really need it for myself.
16:01<poptix>rkulagow: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/nfsroot.txt =p
16:01<poptix>i'd point to the other documentation, rather than copying it

20:08<BenB>which allows me to keep the current ringbuffer as recording and to record at least until the end of the current programme, even if the frontend dies.
20:09<BenB>currently, if I watch livetv, I am often 20 mins or so behind, to make up for ads etc., but if the frontend crashes, I lost the ringbuffer and with it the whole 20 mins :-(.
20:10<BenB>I stumbled over that TransitionToFile() function, which looks like doing just what I need.
