04:36<Dominik>i have to keep my working copy on desktop pc and on the laptop in sync. what would be the best way to do that?
04:38<@peter1138>rsync?
04:38<@peter1138>or git/hg...
04:39<Dominik>can i set those up so that binaries are ignored?
04:40<SpComb>a distributed vcs would be the best for that
04:41<Dominik>you mean cvs?
04:41<SpComb>I haven't gotten a chance to use git that much yet, but the way I understand it, you would commit updates to your local repo and then pull them in on the other one
04:41<SpComb>no, distributed vcs, Version Control System
04:42-!-XeryusTC [~irc@cc480157-b.sneek1.fr.home.nl] has quit [Quit: May the ducttape be with you]
04:42<Dominik>but i don't need version control for my local changes. and the files get updated through svn as well. i'll give rsync a shot i think
04:43<SpComb>I assumed that you're developing OpenTTD on both your laptop and your desktop at the same time
04:45-!-XeryusTC [~irc@cc480157-b.sneek1.fr.home.nl] has joined #openttd
04:45<Dominik>yes. but i don't need to keep track of my local changes. they only need to be propagated to the other machine without keeping record of the change
04:48<Alberth>Dominik: I'd still use a VCS even if you don't use the history. Automagic merging of changes (and that will happen at some time) are useful enough on their own. (afaik rsync doesn't do that)
04:49<Dominik>but the two copies should never differ. once i start working on the laptop i want to sync it with the desktop and vice versa
04:50<SpComb>still a usecase that a distributed vcs carters to
04:50<SpComb>if you ever forget to sync before you modify, rsync won't like it
04:51<Dominik>hmm, ok. which vcs do you recommend? git? and how much work is it to set up?
04:52<SpComb>the basic commands are probably quite simple if you've used svn before, but if you really start using it, then it might be a good idea to spend a bit of time reading the documentation

04:52<newhost>hi
04:53<newhost>i created a script name "on_server_connect.scr"
04:53<newhost>but nothing happened when players join
04:53<newhost>the script has only 2 lines
04:53<newhost>say "welcome"
04:53<newhost>say "play fair"

04:54<newhost>can anyone help me
05:03<LordAzamath>newhost: In what directory is the script?
05:03<newhost>scripts
05:04<LordAzamath>mm.. try echo instead of say
05:04<newhost>i will
05:05<LordAzamath>I don't belieeve it'll work but anyway :P
05:06<newhost>no it did not
05:06<newhost>im just can get it right
05:07<newhost>i think im doing everything alright
05:07<Dominik>ok, now i installed git and did "git add ." in my wc. do i have to manually set ignores for the .svn directories or is git smart enough to track svn updates as well?
05:10<LordAzamath>newhost: Don't go offline.. I'll try to find out some things about scripts :) and then help you
05:10<newhost>ok thanks.... i might be afk... but i will definetely be online... thanks
05:14<Dominik>omg, "git-svn fetch" takes forever... how much big will my local repository be with all 12*** revisions in it? does this make sense to check them all out?
05:14<Alberth>Dominik: To git, .svn directoruies is just more source to keep track (I expect). Since OpenTTD is git-aware, you probably don't need them.
05:16<LordAzamath>newhost: I think you're doing it ok...http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?p=633343#p633343
05:16<LordAzamath>This is what I found and it states exactly what should you do
05:16<LordAzamath>and what have you done too :D
05:16<LordAzamath>but.. just for knowing, what version do you have, newhost?
05:17<newhost>beta4
05:17<Dominik>oh, openttd does use git? someone should update the homepage. it doesn't mention git at all. but at least i found a useful wiki entry.
05:17<newhost>LordAzamath: the say and echo command are only appearing in the dedicated server window
05:17<newhost>LordAzamath: not for all users
05:18<LordAzamath>say should appear to other user too
05:18<LordAzamath>..
05:18<LordAzamath>have you got your server advertized
05:18<LordAzamath>I could join and look if I see modt
05:18<LordAzamath> :P
05:20<newhost>yeah the server is ONLY.TESTING
05:20<newhost>and funny or not it seems that suddenly started to work
05:21<newhost>i know im a noobie but i havent done anything... and now it works
05:21<LordAzamath>Yes, I saw that :)
05:22<LordAzamath>btw, did I get kicked or connection lost?
05:22<newhost>yeah it seems that everytime someones connect...
05:22<newhost>connection lost
05:23<LordAzamath>hmm... when I connected umj got connection lost ^^
05:23<LordAzamath>but glad that you got it working
05:24<newhost>yeah
05:24<newhost>i dunno

08:56<Gonozal_VIII>how fast do passenger trains go in the usa?
08:57<Eddi|zuHause2>passenger trains in america are nowhere near anything that they are in europe
08:59<Tefad>suck, and blow.
08:59<Eddi|zuHause2>any kind of passenger transport system needs heavy support by governmental funds, but the american passenger network is chronically underfunded, so they have no money to buy new rolling stock, or fix their tracks
08:59<Gonozal_VIII>i see
08:59<Tefad>metros are the only thing that move at decent rates
08:59<Tefad>and the only reason you'd beat a car ride in those would be due to traffic.
09:00<Tefad>i can see a demand for decent range of passenger service in CA and along the north east.
09:00<Tefad>but cross-country, not so much
09:01<Eddi|zuHause2>on tracks that are not owned by a private (cargo) railway company, you often have speed limits <50km/h, because the track needs maintenance
09:01<Gonozal_VIII>you can reach almost every town here by train :-)

14:29<@Bjarni>LordAzamath: OpenTTD uses UTF-8 internally so yes
14:29<@peter1138>Supports what encoding?
14:29<LordAzamath>arghh
14:29<Eddi|zuHause2>why would grfcodec care about character encoding?
14:29<LordAzamath>I can't get strings which include öäüõ to work properly in names..
14:30<@peter1138>GRF strings require a thorn (þ) at the start to signify UTF-8.
14:30<DaleStan>Does it work in TTDPatch?
14:30<DaleStan>That is a UTF-8 encoded thorn, of course.
14:31<LordAzamath>aghh..
14:32<LordAzamath>I don't get, what thorn?

14:34<LordAzamath>currently problem is that when I have for example ä in nfo, it prints ā and some weird letter

14:35<LordAzamath>what thorn?
14:35<LordAzamath>"GRF strings require a thorn (þ) at the start to signify UTF-8." in the start of the string?
14:35<LordAzamath>so "þöäüõ" 00 would be öäüõ?

14:36<P00_22>does any1 know if the music works?
14:37<P00_22>on the ppc version?
14:37<LordAzamath>I'm making Estonian style town names, but we have a large quantity of these letters in our names
14:37<LordAzamath>P00_22: No need to shout
14:37<DaleStan><LordAzamath> so "þöäüõ" 00 would be öäüõ? <-- If and only if your text editor is saving things in UTF-8. If it's saving in Latin-1/Latin-15, then the thorn, not being a UTF-8 encoded thorn, won't trigger UTF-8 mode, and will appear.
14:38<LordAzamath>hmm.. let me check
14:38<P00_22>LordAzamath: it's exciting..
14:39<LordAzamath>DaleStan: Kwrite says unicode (UTF8)
14:39<@peter1138>LordAzamath, and also check the bottom of http://wiki.ttdpatch.net/tiki-index.php?page=StringCodes
14:39*peter1138 notes that Unicode or thorns are not mentioned on the Action 4 page itself.
14:42*LordAzamath notes happpily that he isn't doing new town names with action4
14:42<LordAzamath>btw, As I could understand, Action12 everything automatically to utf8
14:43<LordAzamath>so I wouldn't really need to put thorns anywhere, just add a action12 somewhere.. is it right? It seems too simple
14:44<DaleStan>No. It forces TTDPatch to enable UTF-8-related changes. It does not force string reading into UTF-8.

14:47<LordAzamath>it changes in utf8
14:47<LordAzamath>but it still comes strange
14:49<DaleStan>Then open your NFO with a hex editor and manually verify the encoding.

14:50<DaleStan>Or manually perform the encoding.
14:50<DaleStan>Or past the offending NFO line.
14:50<@peter1138>As you never stated what actually happens in the first place...
14:50<@peter1138>Or on paste.openttd.org...
14:50<LordAzamath>peter1138: I did state
14:51<DaleStan>No, you didn't. "weird" is as well known as "strange".
14:51<@peter1138>"for example ä in nfo, it prints ā and some weird letter" == not UTF-8 encoded
14:51<LordAzamath>I tried with thorn too btw
14:51<LordAzamath>I just didn't say that
14:51<@peter1138>Did you paste?
14:51<LordAzamath>it remained the same
14:52<LordAzamath>yes
14:52<LordAzamath>because I have no idea how to make a thorn sign :P
14:52<@peter1138>Er...
14:52<@peter1138><DaleStan> Or manually perform the encoding.

14:54<LordAzamath>it's impossible combination because even :P
14:54<@peter1138>Pardon?
14:55<DaleStan>On Windows, hold Alt and type 0222 on the numpad.
14:55<LordAzamath>DaleStan: I'm not on windows
14:56<LordAzamath>anyway, with þ in front it just says ā and 3/4 sign after it
14:56<LordAzamath>and then the old thing
14:58*LordAzamath considers installing khexedit
14:58<DaleStan>Then your encoding is broken. Paste the offending line (post-NFORenum), preferably with what the hex editor says.
15:00<LordAzamath>funny.. paste.openttd.org did not recognise eithe öäüõ nor þ characters

15:07<LordAzamath>ok.. now I'm going to create a structure so there wouldn't be nonsense names :D
15:08<+glx>LordAzamath: for info, the 2 grfs in http://devs.openttd.org/~glx/townname/ do exactly the same as the openttd townname generators
