#openttd IRC Logs for 2008-12-25

---Logopened Thu Dec 25 00:00:28 2008
00:48<SpComb^>the logs are down for the inmitent future because of someone's incompetence
00:49<SpComb^>there's probably a loose netwrok cable somewhere or somethning, or then the machine is broken
00:51<mincepie>huzzah!
00:51<mincepie>merry christmas.
00:53<SpComb^>yeah, christmas holidays and there's nobody there etc
00:53<mincepie>quite
00:53<mincepie>interesting theory, however
00:53<SpComb^>then there's a power outage, everything falls apart completely (for the fourth time this year)
00:54<mincepie>how do you propose a cat5e/6 plug may disconnect itself from its socket? ;)
00:54<SpComb^>I have no clue, but I haven't hearrd anything, I'm just assuming
00:54<SpComb^>I'm not at home, so I'm busy mostly ignoring it
00:54<mincepie></joke>
00:56<mincepie>I very much enjoy the idea that facebook want me to tell them whether I like or dislike individual banner ads

01:51<@Rubidium>I think it's the latter, but I'm far frm sure
01:52<domokun>OK, thanks

13:35<mincepie>mmm
13:37<mincepie>it's not that I resent being given £5 for christmas, it's just that I've been getting £5 every year since my birth in 1990, and inflation means this is now worth about 55% as much as it was then
13:38<mincepie>though my grandmother has been giving my father £5 since 1951. I suppose he's a bit worse off
13:39<Eddi|zuHause>my grandparents have lived through more currencies, they probably do understand the effect of inflation :p
13:39<Eddi|zuHause>and also that the children need more money anyway as they got older
13:40<mincepie>true
13:41<Eddi|zuHause>i'm not really sure about the values, but i think i got 50€ for christmas, and another 20€ for showing up at them today ;)

15:31<Armon>Hi, all.
15:32<Armon>I have a problem with OpenTTD and already checked the wiki. Whenever I start multiplayer, it starts downloading pretty fast, but *always* somewhere between 120-160kB downloaded (of say, 400-500kB), it continuously slows down to a virtual stop.
15:32<Armon>I've now been at 163kB for several minutes, for example.
15:32<Armon>It's been like this for about 2 years and I never bothered trying to fix it, now I'm trying to.
15:33<Armon>This happens regardless of which server I'm trying to connect, and it has happened since 0.5.2, although now I'm using 0.6.3. Ubuntu Linux.
15:33<Armon>Any ideas? Or is this normal, perhaps?

16:13<Armon>I seem to be the only person in the world with this problem. The weird thing is that it happens to me on multiple installations and networks.

16:16<Armon>Firewall is non-existent. Also, it does connect and download quickly in the beginning, the manual says that to connect to other servers, it's only outbound.
16:16<Armon>But I might be using the same ISP, however.
16:16<Armon>On these different networks that is, I hadn't thought about that. I'll check it out, thanks.

20:59<SmatZ>I think he shot himself
20:59<SmatZ>I haven't seen him for ~35 hours
20:59<fjb>That is ok.
20:59<SmatZ>:)
21:29<mincepie>any germans about? :S
21:30<Eddi|zuHause>no.
21:30<Eddi|zuHause>they are obviously all asleep at 3:30
21:31<mincepie>I'm detecting a few small flaws in your argument
21:31<Eddi|zuHause>it's called "irony"
21:31<Eddi|zuHause>i thought you guys invented that :p
21:32<mincepie>no, no, it was pliny
21:32<mincepie>we just got really good at it ^_^
21:32<Eddi|zuHause>so... what did you really want to ask?
21:33<mincepie>I wanted to ask whether "e.schweizerbart sche verlagsbuchhan" was a name, a name and a company name, a company name, or what
21:33<mincepie>oh, sorry, it's verlagsbuchhandlung
21:33<Eddi|zuHause>err... sounds like there are some letters missing
21:33<mincepie>sodding deutsche bank wordwrapped it
21:34<mincepie>yes
21:34<mincepie>ordering party, sorry, is listed as "E.Schweizerbart'sche/ Verlagsbuchhandlung..."
21:34<Eddi|zuHause>"E. Schweizerbart" sounds like a name, as in founder of that "Verlagsbuchhandlung", which then would be a company
21:34<mincepie>I would guess the latter is a company
21:34<mincepie>right
21:34<mincepie>hm
21:35<mincepie>still can't put "Dear Mr Schweizerbart'sche" owing to gender ambiguity
21:35<mincepie>oh well, "dear sir" will do fine
21:36<Eddi|zuHause>"sche" is a suffix, you should leave that out. and you don't know if the founder is actually still at the company
21:36<mincepie>ok
21:39<Eddi|zuHause>and for future reference, the last part of the word ("Handlung" [something to do with "Handel" == "trade"] in this case) is usually the most generic, the words before that are increasing levels of specification
21:40<mincepie>intriguing
21:40<mincepie>english does that also, I suppose
21:40<Eddi|zuHause>a "Buch - Handlung" would then be a shop for books
21:40<mincepie>yeah, guessed that ^_^
21:41<Eddi|zuHause>Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän
21:41<mincepie>ah
21:41<mincepie>is that the meat labelling regulator?
21:41<Eddi|zuHause>is a captain, who works for the Donaudampfschifffahrtsgeselschaft
21:41<mincepie>or something
21:42<Eddi|zuHause>+l
21:42<mincepie>ah, here we are
21:42<Eddi|zuHause>which is a Gesellschaft [something along the lines of "Company"] which deals in Donaudampfschifffahrt
21:42<mincepie>Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz
21:43<Eddi|zuHause>Fahrt -- meaning they drive Donaudampfschiffe
21:43<mincepie>I've got "Danube Steamship Company captain"
21:43<Eddi|zuHause>yes, something along that line
21:43<mincepie>interestingly, translating all these very long german words into esperanto makes them even longer.
21:44<mincepie>german efficiency beats all, once again ¬.¬
21:45<Eddi|zuHause>i remember the time when i started to notice that some of the words i use every day are actually made up of smaller components
21:45<mincepie>mmm
21:45-!-fjb_ [~frank@p5485E025.dip.t-dialin.net] has joined #openttd

21:46<Eddi|zuHause>or "Brottasche" can be split into "Brot" [bread] and "Tasche" [bag]
21:47<Eddi|zuHause>that was also the time that i noticed that there were two "t" in "Brottasche" ;)
21:47<fjb_>Here is the link to the Schweizerbartsche Verlagsbuchhandlung: http://www.schweizerbart.de/
21:48<mincepie>or "electroencephalography" may be split into "electron", "encephalos", and "graphy", meaning "amber brain drawing"
21:49<Eddi|zuHause>that was not actually a word of every day use when i was 4 :p
21:49<mincepie>hm, you must have gone to a state-funded school

21:52<Eddi|zuHause>http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Schulgespenst <- that one i think

21:54<mincepie>I can only think it's being more open-minded or something

23:00<baudchan>so I am pretty new to openttd, and I am going through the manual and so I've built two bus stations and have two busses running between them. I noticed that one will generate 15 or so passengers while the other collects passengers, and is already in the upwards of 1,000 passengers. Is this supposed to happen? also I've noticed that even though my busses make nearly $4,000 annually I seem to be losing money
