13:46<LordAro>why do you want openttd.cfg to recognise them? you can just add them in the newgrf settings

14:37<andythenorth>controversial
14:37<andythenorth>I still don't understand cargodist
14:37<frosch123>is that a good thing?
14:37<frosch123>usually games are more fun if you do not understand them completely
14:38<frosch123>it leaves room for interpretation and imagination :)
14:38<andythenorth>:)
14:39<andythenorth>last game I tried was a mess
14:40<andythenorth>I approached it like YACD
14:40<andythenorth>and I tried using autorefit
14:40<andythenorth>one of those is wrong, and one of those is broken
14:41<andythenorth>so I guess I should forget about YACD-style play
14:41<andythenorth>and also forget about autorefit :)
14:41<@Alberth>initial setup of auto-refit is somewhat more complicated than what you'd ideally want
14:42<andythenorth>it's too fragile
14:42<andythenorth>having to change that 'distribute cargo to stations even without a demand' switch is not at all obvious
14:42<andythenorth>and then having cargo waiting everywhere makes it hard to figure out what cdist is actually doing
14:42<@Alberth>you don't actually have to do that, just refit to the desired cargo one time
14:43<@Alberth>cdist doesn't really like it if you change train movements, it has to run some calculations, and then play catchup
14:44<@Alberth>so it's a mess for some time
14:44<@Alberth>not something you have to worry about very much, it sorts itself out eventually
14:44<andythenorth>autorefit seems like it was designed with yacd in mind, and now I find it kind of useless
14:45<@Alberth>I had a good use for it with fruit and maize in tropical
14:45<frosch123>i used it for candyfloss/sugar/toffee

14:46<@Alberth>but not doing autorefit may be better for understanding what cdist is doing
14:47<andythenorth>I'm sure I found in my last game that autorefit doesn't work even with explicit orders
14:47<andythenorth>I spent some 30 mins or so testing different things
14:47<andythenorth>no cargo is distributed to the station iirc
14:48<andythenorth>nvm

14:49<@Alberth>cdist takes some time to add new stations to the distribution
14:50<@Alberth>usually it does get some, unless it is far away across the map from the creating industry
14:51<@Alberth>also having symmetric distribution limits choices here
14:51<@Alberth>then you only get as much cargo as the smallest amount that can be transported
14:52<@Alberth>which obviously fails horribly with most industries
14:52<andythenorth>iirc, the issue was that industries simply didn't distribute cargo to the station
14:53<andythenorth>the autorefit didn't seem to mark the station as visiited by a vehicle with that refit
14:53<andythenorth>but I might be talking rubbish, it was months ago
14:53<andythenorth>anyway, I'm compiling for a new game :)
14:54<@Alberth>oh, it worked for me, but you do need to visit a station with at least one wagon for each cargo you want to exchange there
14:56<Eddi|zuHause>that's probably something that needs to be improved
14:57<@Alberth>which holds for almost all parts of the program :)
14:58<andythenorth>I am smoking crack, autorefit with explicit order does work

14:58<andythenorth>is cdist now on by default for all cargos?
14:59<andythenorth>I can't see an off switch
14:59<Eddi|zuHause>"manual" means "off"
