15:55<aoeu>or how to compile openttd without the freaking 8GB studio
16:02<@Alberth>using linux eliminates the need for studio stuff :p
16:02<aoeu>sadly some people still use windows
16:05<Wolf01>wait the anniversary update and use the ubuntu subsystem... which might be another 8GB
16:10<V453000>yeah only about 95% XD
16:18<Eddi|zuHause>you can use mingw to compile openttd
16:19<Eddi|zuHause>as to your original question, no clue.

17:10<rosco>Hey guys, I wondered if someone could help me. It looks like newly available rail vehicles aren't showing in the new rail vehicles dialogue. For example, I was just offered a preview on a new train, I said yes, and the new train is now showing in the new rail vehicles dialogue. Has anyone got any suggestions / pointers?
17:11<Eddi|zuHause>you need to click and hold the rail toolbar icon to switch to a new railtype
17:11<Eddi|zuHause>like electric or monorai
17:11<Eddi|zuHause>l
17:11<rosco>ooooohhh they are electic
17:11<rosco>wow, thanks dude, I had no idea
17:12<Eddi|zuHause>it's not the most obvious feature in the game, yes.
17:14<Wolf01>at least is not ctrl+shift+win+right click while scrolling with the mouse wheel
17:14<Eddi|zuHause>well, we have those kinds of features as well, where people go "wait, i played this game for 20 years and didn't know THAT"
17:16<rosco>haha that sounds like an osx keyboard shortcut... well minus the win key
17:16<Eddi|zuHause>well, pretty much anything you can click has an alternate function when you do ctrl+click
17:17<rosco>my god these electric trains are so much faster
17:18<Wolf01>how to play the entire game with steam/diesel trains
17:18<rosco>haha
17:19<Eddi|zuHause>have you read the forum thread where the guy wanted to play 170 years with inflation and just horses? :p
17:19<Wolf01>oh my
17:19<rosco>so one more question - can I change key mappings?.. e.g. using wasd instead of the arrow keys
17:20<Eddi|zuHause>rosco: some, but maybe not all of them you can change in hotkeys.cfg (no ingame interface)
17:20<rosco>ahh cool, thanks, I'll take a look
17:21<Eddi|zuHause>mind you that these keys already have a function, probably
17:21<rosco>yeah they do by the looks of it, but for shortcuts I think I can live without
17:22<Wolf01>like raise terrain, autorail/road, signals, depot or dynamite
17:23<Eddi|zuHause>honestly, wasd for scrolling the map is probably a terrible idea, you either use the mouse to scroll, or you have your right hand free to use the arrow keys
17:24<Eddi|zuHause>(i miss the ability to steer the mouse cursor with alt+arrow keys from TTO)

17:24<Wolf01>the what?
17:25<Eddi|zuHause>that feature probably got lost in the windows port of TTD
17:25<Eddi|zuHause>you could perfectly well play TTO without a mouse
17:26<Wolf01>just enable the ease of access to use the keypad when num lock is disabled
17:27<Eddi|zuHause>not the same thing
17:27<Eddi|zuHause>also, i don't have windows
17:27-!-Myhorta [~Myhorta@00018fad.user.oftc.net] has joined #openttd
17:28<Wolf01>there's for linux too, I remember I used it
17:29<Alkel_U3>reminds me of that time when I mapped half of the keybord and mouse on my gamepad and played Civ IV with a gamepad :-)
17:29<Eddi|zuHause>yeah, but it never really worked the way i wanted it to
17:30<Eddi|zuHause>civ iv seems like a game that is totally tedious without 100 hotkeys
17:31<Alkel_U3>yeah, but I managed to cover about thirty most basic
17:33<Alkel_U3>not that the gamepad has that many buttons, but the profiler software could map a "fn/shift" key, there's the d-pad, second joystick...
17:34<Eddi|zuHause>i'm sure if you rework the interface to allow for something like "press and hold button, then use joystick in 8 directions" for selecting some functions
17:35<milek7>how about playing tetris via traceroute? :>
17:35<Alkel_U3>that would also work for a mouse without a keyboard to an extent
17:38<Eddi|zuHause>of the top of my head, the most common keys are probably f,s,a,w and space, then all the specialized worker commands
17:38<Eddi|zuHause>maybe i misremember the keys and mix them up with civ II :p
17:39<Eddi|zuHause>they shuffled them around occasionally
17:39<Alkel_U3>cant remember what a,w does
17:40<Eddi|zuHause>w goes to the next unit without giving the current one an order
17:40<Alkel_U3>hm, I did that with enter
17:40<Eddi|zuHause>and a activates a unit, i think
17:41<Eddi|zuHause>but that might really have been in civ ii

17:44<Alkel_U3>speaking of Civ, I'm curious what's Civ VI gonna be like. After the direction it took with Civ V I'm not even looking forward to it very much
17:44<Eddi|zuHause>i don't think there was anything wrong with Civ V
17:44<Eddi|zuHause>but i haven't played it very much in the past few years
17:45<Eddi|zuHause>and certainly not since i found EU IV
17:45<Alkel_U3>I don't think it's a bad game, I just think it's not a very good Civilization. Not to my taste

17:53<Eddi|zuHause>i actually tried a civ IV game a few months ago, it usually goes well until the first person declares war on me :p

17:55<Alkel_U3>first war is the worst one if you're on the defending side :-)

17:55<Eddi|zuHause>i always found it bad that in epic and marathon mode it scales up the unit costs
17:55<Eddi|zuHause>means you can't react quickly enough
17:56<Alkel_U3>well, yeah, you've got to be prepared
17:56<Alkel_U3>slavery also works well
17:56<Eddi|zuHause>i'm almost never "prepared"
17:56<Eddi|zuHause>and i hate slavery
17:56<Eddi|zuHause>i barely ever take it
17:57<Alkel_U3>actually, it's only recently that I discovered how wonderful that civic actually is
17:58<Eddi|zuHause>yes, it's pretty crazy
17:58<Eddi|zuHause>especially in the early game, if you have lots of food and no health to support large cities
17:58<Eddi|zuHause>or happiness
17:59<Eddi|zuHause>and rushing a wonder is also crazy powerful
18:01<Alkel_U3>I usually try to rush prerequisites for vassalage and build the oracle - having longbowmen early means practically invincible cities for a while
18:02<Eddi|zuHause>i'm usually behind in the military branch of the tech tree
18:02<Eddi|zuHause>but yes, bowmen are very powerful, especially with imperial leader
18:04<Eddi|zuHause>(the leader trait that gives first strike and city defence to bowmen)
18:05<Alkel_U3>I think that's protective and doesn't do the first-strike bit, but I may be wrong on that one
18:05<Eddi|zuHause>protective, that might be it
18:05<Eddi|zuHause>and it definitely gives you 2 free things
18:06<Alkel_U3>you're right, it does grant drill promotion
18:07<Eddi|zuHause>what did imperial do then? settler and walls build speed?
18:07<Alkel_U3>definitely settlers
18:07<Alkel_U3>walls are also part of the protective trait
18:08<Eddi|zuHause>i always play as charlemagne, so i mix up these traits
18:08<Alkel_U3>ah, great general emergence
18:08<Eddi|zuHause>oh yeah
18:08<Eddi|zuHause>sadly, fighting barbarians doesn't give you a general :/
18:08<Eddi|zuHause>and i try to avoid wars
18:09<Alkel_U3>I often play as Montezuma so I usually wipe out a few neighbors right from the start
18:09<Alkel_U3>actually, I do that with most other leaders, too :-)
18:10<Eddi|zuHause>wars are always so destructive. i hate losing units, let alone cities
18:10<Alkel_U3>but only on marathon speed, when I can be sure that nobody builds anything fancy right off the start
18:11<Alkel_U3>snatching developed cities early on is much more economical then building them yourself
18:12<Alkel_U3>they even often come with a religion center
18:12<Eddi|zuHause>i usually do early start with a religion tech
18:13<Eddi|zuHause>i mean advanced start
18:14<Alkel_U3>I never tried that, always played from the bare start
18:16<Alkel_U3>I didn't even play with mods, usually. Only once I activated a mod that extends the base game with futuristic tech, but the game ended before futuristic era
18:16<Eddi|zuHause>i use a mod called "Better BUG AI", which leaves gameplay unchanged, but gives you loads of interface and AI enhencements
18:19<Alkel_U3>that looks interesting, thanks for the tip
