08:17<shoonya>hello. how to boot a virtual machine from a cd image ?
08:18<shoonya>i have this entry 'file:/disk-images/knoppix-6.2.1.iso,sdc:cdrom,r' in the disk field in the config file but while booting up, it shows this message: sdc: unknown partition table
08:18<shoonya>and then stops at: Begin: Waiting for root file system ...
08:20<shoonya>deshantm, if you're there ^^
08:51<deshantm>shoonya: I'm not so sure you can do that, unless it is an HVM guest
08:52<shoonya>deshantm, ie i cant boot a virtual machine from a cd-rom ?
08:53<deshantm>you can if you use have hardware support for virtualization Intel VT or AMD-V
08:55<shoonya>deshantm, how do i find out what kind of virtualization i have used
08:56<shoonya>cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i vmx doesnt return anything
08:56<shoonya> xm dmesg | grep -i hvm returns: (XEN) HVM: VMX enabled
08:57<deshantm>shoonya: xm_info | grep xen_caps
08:58<shoonya>deshantm, xen_caps : xen-3.0-x86_64 xen-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_32 hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64
08:58<shoonya>with xm info, xm_info was not found
08:59<deshantm>oops xm info | grep xen_caps
08:59<deshantm>ok, yeah looks good
08:59<deshantm>you need to use the hvmloader
08:59<deshantm>i can try to find an example
09:01<shoonya>i want to boot a vm from a cd image. it looks like it is a hvm. any hints/pointers? deshantm
09:01<deshantm>http://www.novell.com/communities/node/3046/how-boot-paravirtual-xen-domu-cd-rom-or-iso-sles-10-sp1-or-opensuse-103
09:02<shoonya>is paravirtualization same as hvm? deshantm
09:02<deshantm>no
09:02<deshantm>http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenOverview
09:03<shoonya>this guide is for paravirtualization. OTOH, i have used the two additions that it says, ie boot='d', and ?file:/usr/local/src/systemrescue-x86.iso,hdc:cdrom,r?
09:04<deshantm>the guide wanted to do pv, but couldn't so they decided to do HVM
09:05<deshantm>the next box had builder, device_model, and kernel added
09:05<deshantm>with the old bootloader, bootargs, and extra commented out, which you should remove or comment with #
09:06<shoonya>deshantm, i have kernel as this: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-xen-amd64 do i need to change it ?
09:07<deshantm>comment it with a # or just remove it
09:08<shoonya>deshantm, and device-model is mandatory?
09:09<deshantm>yes
09:09<shoonya>deshantm, i get this error: Error: Kernel image does not exist: /usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader
09:09<shoonya>ok, the path was wrong i guess
09:10<deshantm>yeah, what distribution of Linux are you using?
09:11<shoonya>debian
09:12<shoonya>i get this error now Error: Bootloader isn't executable deshantm
09:12<deshantm>ls /usr/lib/xen*
09:12<deshantm>ls -d /usr/lib/xen*
09:14<shoonya>/usr/lib/xen-3.2-1 /usr/lib/xen-common /usr/lib/xen-default /usr/lib/xen-tools
09:15<deshantm>so change it to /usr/lib/xen-3.2-1/boot/hvmloader
09:17<shoonya>deshantm, that is what i have done
09:18<shoonya>the error is there despite that
09:18<deshantm>pastebin your config file
09:20<shoonya>deshantm, http://pastie.org/1274823
09:21<deshantm>shoonya: also comment the ramdisk line
09:22<shoonya>deshantm, same error
09:23<deshantm>ls -l /usr/lib/xen-3.2-1/boot/hvmloader
09:24<shoonya>deshantm, non executable.
09:24<shoonya>deshantm, should i set it to executable by owner ?
09:25<deshantm>i can check a system that I have access to
09:25<deshantm>just a sec

12:13<jcordeiro>shoonya: as long as you have "losetup kpartx parted resize2fs "
12:13<jcordeiro>you do not need a live cd
12:13<jcordeiro>to resize the partition
12:13<jcordeiro>you just need those commands on your host
12:15<jcordeiro>that way you can emulate a disk from the img in the server host (with losetup)
12:15<jcordeiro>create partition devices with kpartx
12:16<jcordeiro>expand partitions with parted
12:16<jcordeiro>and expand ext3 filesystem with resize2fs
