08:12<dpkg>You need the firmware to make the card work. Run "/sbin/modinfo ipw2200" to get your driver version. Go to and download the firmware matching your driver version. 08:39<vir182>I can't play any sound for my sound hard since a recent upgrade (unstable). i have an INTEL ICH7 sound card - (module snd_hda_intel). the module is loaded on startup, kmix (KDE) shows the controls. but when i call alsamixer i get "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory". i have no clue if this is udev related (missing entry in one of the device) or alsa sound problems. any suggestion?

08:52<vir182>cahoot: was that "invoke-rc.d alsa force-reload" or "invoke-rc.d alsa-utils force-reload"? because i have not alsa in /etc/init.d
08:52<cahoot>vir182: the last resort would be some module option listed in ALSA-Configuration.txt
08:54<vir182>cahoot: the strange thing is that the card shows up, aplay can list it, the devices entries are created by udev. the only thing i can not do is playing anything. and the aplay error just gave me a thing that maybe udev missed one of the enrties

23:39<sodagood>well you do see why it's more popular than debian and every other distro right?
23:39<sodagood>because it plays into the "stupid easy" setup windows and regular users enjoy
23:40<sodagood>keyboard warriors, nix zealots who fear the GUI days are done
23:40<sodagood>most people don't want to have to *learn how to use an OS, minus pointin and clicking
23:40<sodagood>and I really hope other nix distros follow ubuntus way and make themselves not only more easy to use on the GUI end
23:41<sodagood>but overall, don't have to resort to the real nix when a problem arises and GUI addressing isn't working
23:41<sodagood>because as you said more money for all...which helps development time and linux really is a great alternative to windows
23:42<sodagood>mandrivia, novell linux are stupid easy aswell but try and sell their OS before they get a big userbase
