02:14<Bolly>what's the command to forcefully kill a process by pid?

02:14<Supaplex>Bolly: it's the kill command.
02:15<marcuss>- da x
02:15<santosh>marcuss, try this:
02:15<marcuss>ty man u pwn
02:15<Supaplex>Bolly: kill -9 <pid>
02:15<Bolly>weird, it stays there when i do
02:15<Bolly>ah thanks that has got it
02:15<Bolly>cheers supaplex
02:16<Supaplex>Bolly: kill (aka, signal) has many signals (each work in different ways depending on the process). also, a process cannot receive a signal if it's in the middle of a block or i/o read, but it will receive it once that returns (rare that a process will be stuck that way, but it happens)
02:16[~]Killing_Frost raids his caffiene stash.
02:16<marcuss>has anyone heard of the linux distro Skolelinux ??
02:17[~]Supaplex uses raid10 for his caffiene stash ;)
02:17<Bolly>so it's like a little note to the process saying do this
02:17<Bolly>where -9 is die
02:17<Supaplex>Bolly: yup. -9 is unblockable man kill for all the fun details.
02:17[~]Killing_Frost has a Pepsi unleaded addiction.
02:17<Bolly>is that something the app coder puts in or at an OS level?
02:17|-|toNo [antonio@] has joined #debian
02:18|-|toNo [antonio@] has left #debian []
02:19<Supaplex>Bolly: mostly the os level, but the app has more control on unblockable signals
02:20<Supaplex>eg, if you tell an app to sigterm, it could setup a signal handler to clean up important data files before it quits. some programs will ignore them for other reasons.

08:38<pmitros>I've seen a bunch of posts of people having similar problems on the Internet, with mixed solutions, none of which worked here.
08:42<klando>pmitros, try "apt-get build-dep gnash"

08:47<pmitros>Okay. Packages installed. It is building now. I don't know if it restarted the build process, or if it is continuing past that point.
08:47<ra9ftm>The VirtualBox support driver which is running is from a different version of VirtualBox. You can correct this by stopping all running instances of VirtualBox and reinstalling the software.. VBox status code: -1912 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH).
08:47<klando>ra9ftm, use aptitude
08:47<ra9ftm>The problem is like here, but no answer...
08:47<pmitros>I can't do that directly. gnash in unstable depends on a bunch of newer versions of packages not in stable. The variant that I did was to apt-get source -build, see what it complains about, and install versions of those packages from stable.
08:48<klando>pmitros, you will probably have to build other package around the dependance of gnash
08:48<klando>do the same way, it is usually good enought

09:04<klando>natively ..
09:04<pmitros>I don't believe so. I believe it ought to build with the versions of packages in stable, or if not, require a comperatively small number of additional packages in /usr/local (not so much for newer versions, but swfmill is not in stable at all)
09:05<pmitros>The version of pango, in particular, claims to be new enough for it.
09:05<pmitros>And the error implies it is a problem with pango.
09:07<pmitros>One place on the Internet claimed that it was a build problem. glib can be configured to either use or not use atk, and if it is configured not to use it, you get that error. I don't think that's exactly the problem, but probably something along those lines.
09:07<pmitros>In which case, I ought to be able to rebuild one or two packages to get it working. It's just difficult to know which ones.

21:18<s32aph>sidd: yes and no, shutdown = restart yes, restart = shutdown no
