00:00-!-oahong [~oahong@] has joined #debian
00:02<damion>i just did a dist-upgrade from stable to testing and now i cant boot unless i revert to the 2.6.18 kernel
00:03<[R]Tim>what kernel is testing anyway?
00:03-!-path [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:03<damion>by default it installed 2.6.24-1-486 but i also tried 2.6.22-3-k7 since im using an athlon
00:04<Nemoder>how far does it get?
00:04<damion>it hangs when it starts displaying info about my hard drives, in the exact same place everytime
00:06<Nemoder>kernel panic or just freezes?
00:06<damion>just freezes
00:06<damion>i have to do a hard reset

00:08<Nemoder>you could try compiling your own kernel and see if it has the same problem
00:09-!-jack [] has joined #debian
00:09<damion>hm maybe. ive never done that before, not sure im ready for it yet.
00:09<jack>can any one recommend a good wireless card? I'm looking for a ubuntu sported, usb, fast and like a good antenna? and if there are any good deals I'm looking to spend under 75$
00:09-!-ujwal [~ujwal@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:10-!-yvasilev [~yvasilev@] has joined #debian
00:10<Nemoder>it's not too hard, if you install kernel-package it will create a .deb for you from the kernel sources
00:11<damion>is this a pretty comprehensive tutorial?
00:12-!-Pulpie [] has joined #debian
00:12<Nemoder>ya that looks good, although you can even skip most of the menuconfig and just copy over your existing kernel's configuration
00:13<damion>yeah, im using my old 2.6.18 right now because i know it works
00:13<Nemoder>oh that's what the tutorial says to do anyway nm
00:13<damion>it would be nice to use that as a starting point
00:13<[R]Tim>how do i get grub to have a bootskin. i dont like the default one. or do i have to use lilo
00:13<damion>do i have to quit my xserver or can i do this from xterm?
00:13<Pulpie>dondelelcaro: oh your here too, I sure hope your not op cause you really suck as one on freenode.

00:14<damion>sweet, ill give that a shot!
00:15<Nemoder>you can also install the .deb in an xterm and it will update your grub/lilo so next time you reboot the new kernel will be on the list

00:39<damion>whoa boy, menuconfig is giving me problems. after i type in the name of the config i want to use, it sends me straight back to the main menu
00:39<damion>i got a bunch of warnings that say trying to assign nonexistent symbol
00:39<Nemoder>it probably loaded it fine, just exit and save
00:39<Nemoder>if it was a config for an older version then ya many options will have changed which generate warnings

Add --initrd before kernel_image if you need an initrd.
00:40<dondelelcaro>see above.

18:49<xid>just install linux-headers of your kernel
