01:01<linner>yet ssmtp isn't a good alternative since it doesn't handle local delivery
01:02<linner>because postfix is running as a daemon continuously, i don't know how well the idea would work: having to pass custom client smtp auth info to it, requiring reloading of the daemon config each time a new profile is invoked
01:03<linner>guess i should be asking this stuff on #postfix. sorry

02:53<valdyn>acu_rodna: im sure they dont just work as root
02:54<valdyn>acu_rodna: your playback method or accessing whatever media might require root
02:54<acu_rodna>valdyn: how can I know which sound card is in /dev ?
02:55<valdyn>acu_rodna: why would you care?
02:55<cahoot>got more than one?
02:55<valdyn>acu_rodna: you are not supposed to care about sound device nodes in /dev.
02:56<valdyn>acu_rodna: you use alsa, alsa interaction with /dev stuff is supposed to be hidden from users
02:56<cahoot>check out /proc/asound/cards
02:56<valdyn>acu_rodna: now unless you want to hack on alsa you dont need to know
02:56<acu_rodna>is there a command to list my devices - I want to broadcast with VLC and I have a built in sound card and a Gigaware headphoneset with USB and I have to tell the VLC which one is the sound device I need
02:56<acu_rodna>to be used
02:56<valdyn>acu_rodna: cat /proc/asound/cards
02:56<valdyn>acu_rodna: cat /proc/asound/devices
02:56<valdyn>acu_rodna: make vlc use alsa, not oss

02:58<acu_rodna>also I have two webcams - one is build in HP webcam and one bought with 80$ - Quickcam pro9000 - neither is recognized by Ekiga - I do not know what to do
02:58<cahoot>the qc probably want uvcvideo
02:59<cahoot>(and should work fine with that)
02:59<acu_rodna>I have heard that sometimes you need to give some chmode 777 or something like this - but since I do not know which one is which - is a shooot in the dark
02:59<valdyn>acu_rodna: dont do that, its the wrong thing
02:59<valdyn>acu_rodna: but you want to be in the video group

03:00<valdyn>acu_rodna: ( and in the sound group for sound access )
03:00<acu_rodna>valdyn: I spent 1000 $ on the laptop and 81 on a new webcam - and I have to make it work - at any cost -
03:01<valdyn>acu_rodna: thats not relevant to support here really
03:01<exsanet>cpa neeeeeeee
03:01<valdyn>acu_rodna: debian device access is controlled by groups, not chmod
03:01<exsanet>ronda emang pos ronda
03:01<acu_rodna>the webcam is really frustrating - If I have the built in work - it will be so great - in Vista works exceptionally well - the built in and of course the quickcam pro works well in windows - so I know is not hardware
03:01<valdyn>acu_rodna: oh, shite, the group for sound is "audio", not sound
03:02<exsanet>ngomong ap ceee /
03:02<cahoot>the qc9000 probably wants a module/driver called uvcvideo - install that and test basic functionality with luvcview
03:02<acu_rodna>OK, so I have to add myself in video and audio group - that is great
03:02<exsanet>lo dh guila ya

03:05<acu_rodna>cahoot: OK I will try that
03:05<valdyn>does debian in lenny already to static alsa sound card indexing_
03:05<valdyn>does debian in lenny already to static alsa sound card indexing?
03:05<cahoot>asoundconf creates an .asoundrc to the effect
03:06<valdyn>I still have my own custom "options <module> index=<value>Ä stuff
03:06<cahoot>so do I
03:07<acu_rodna>OK, since you guys are so cool - maybe you can answer me why the latest driver from NVIDIA, though is compiled - in Lenny the Xwindow crashes - it is so strange -so while I am as root - I compile the kernel and startx - the resolution is good - but if I exit and reboot - when it hits Xwindow it freezes - I tried several times without success - I have no Ideea why is that - useless to say is frustrating
03:07<valdyn>acu_rodna: thats because the nvidia driver is somehow broken
03:08<valdyn>acu_rodna: we cant debug it really, nvidia can
03:08<valdyn>acu_rodna: maybe the system isnt crashed entirely but only X is
03:09<valdyn>acu_rodna: ctrl-alt-backspace does not work at that point?
03:09<acu_rodna>did not try -
03:09<valdyn>acu_rodna: its X btw, not Xwindow
03:09<acu_rodna>I do ctrl alt delete (it reboots the system sometimes -
03:10<acu_rodna>valdyn thanks
03:10<Gekz>without putty on windows, I'd suicide
03:10<valdyn>acu_rodna: ctrl-alt-backspace is supposed to quit X
03:11<cahoot>Gekz: not credible
03:11-!-colby|other [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:11<valdyn>acu_rodna: if ctrl-alt-backspace works, then your system did not crash, only X did
03:11<valdyn>acu_rodna: if ctrl-alt-delete works, then your system did not crash, only X did
03:11<acu_rodna>valdyn - great I will try it - though I spent countless hours trying to figure out what the heck is going on - to me what is the most puzzling is that it works well after compilation when I do a hot xrestart (or actually when I go from root to normal user) but if I shutdown the system - when I reboot the X freezes
03:12<valdyn>acu_rodna: maybe theres something in /var/log/Xorg.0.log at that point
03:12<Gekz>SAK your computer
03:12<cahoot>acu_rodna: a bit late to ask but - how did you install nvidia?
03:13<valdyn>acu_rodna: you could have two parallel nvidia installs too, if you used both the nvidia installer and debians method
03:13<acu_rodna>I updated the linux-headers for AMD 2.6.25 exit xwindow login as root and run the nvidia.bla bla driver (latest one)
03:13<valdyn>acu_rodna: that would explain the difference between restarting and compiling
03:13<acu_rodna>valdyn: I have a feeling that you are genius :)
03:14<acu_rodna>it might be then when I reboot - the debian kicks in and changes something -
03:14<valdyn>acu_rodna: no
03:15<valdyn>acu_rodna: the kernel module which gets loaded might be different depending on who loads it, the nvidia installer or debians automagic

03:21<valdyn>acu_rodna: i suggest you remove the libgl1-mesa-dri and the libgl1-mesa-glx packages and reinstall the nvidia driver
03:21<valdyn>acu_rodna: if that doesnt work id have to look at individual files, which can be much work
03:21<valdyn>acu_rodna: and wouldnt help if you are running into a real driver bug anyway
03:22<valdyn>acu_rodna: and remove all package that show in "dpkg -l | grep nvidia" too before reinstall the nvidia driver
03:23<acu_rodna>valdyn: I will do it now - I will save first this chat so I will know what to do - I am working now on sound cards - see what can I do - the webcams are hopeless- man I think someone should troubleshoot for money - if someone could do it for me I would pay - I am too busy now for this and still stuck badly - but your help is really significant - I am sure I will get something going
03:23<vook>acu_rodna: when installing nvidia drivers, do first execute the .run binary with the --help option (to see your options!) It's best to extract have the installer extract the package, then to run the nvidia installer from within the extracted directory.
03:24<acu_rodna>valdyn: I was thinking to reformat the hardisk and reinstall from scratch lenny - since I have this one going from one year -so I guess a lot of configurations got messed up with every new kernel and other changes

03:26<acu_rodna>the built in webcam would worth 50$ if I can make it work
03:26<vook>ya - and reformatting/reinstalling doesn't hurt, but it isn't a good habit to get into.
03:26<acu_rodna>vook: I know - this is WindowS technique :)
03:26<vook>debian isn't a company - it's not for profit.
03:27<acu_rodna>vook: I know but someone should have a technical support for money :)
03:28<cahoot>acu_rodna: does lsusb show the usbID for the inbuilt cam?
03:28<vook>this channel is going to likely provide you with more wisdom than any for profit company. Just stick around.
03:29<acu_rodna>I think this is the reason why big companies are reluctant to use Debian - imagine a Hospital like Mayo clinic has around 20K computers plus tons of servers etc - if they will adopt Debian - it will be a big benefit for the distribution - but they are afraid and pay IBM and Dell big bucks to get sucked .
03:29<vook>acu_rodna: #debian-offtopic :)
03:29<acu_rodna>vook: indeed the help here is great - it is almost only place I came in irc - however many times I have not the time to wait and troubleshoot each step
03:30<acu_rodna>vook - I will stop it :)

06:03<fatal_>hello. I'm having some weird bluetooth problem. When I send a file with gnome-obex-send from my workstation to my phone (SE k530i) i get a transfer speed of 5kbyte/s. When I send browse the phone and download something from it I get like 100kbyte/s...... why is uploading so slow? The phone must surely handle to receive faster (even if read+send will probably always be faster then receive+write because of MemoryStick speed)?
06:04<fatal_>Additionally, when I send stuff... the transfer usually dies after 150kbytes transfered.... again, downloading (sending) from the phone is no problem.
06:05<fatal_>I'm assuming the problem is on the computer side..... phones must have more reliable BT nowadays, right?!
06:06<fatal_>If anyone has a bit of bluetooth experience and can share some practical information that would be appreciated! :)

06:08<Tuplad>fatal_: I'd like to install exaile, but the package in aptitude is 0.2.11 while the version on the site is 0.2.13 ... but it's only for ubuntu on their website.
06:08<fatal_>Tuplad: when the ubuntu packages are based on debian packages (ie. "universe" stuff), they often put the difference here: .... be aware that the site can be a bit out of date at times.
06:09<john_>hello i have the following problem : i burn the 1 dvd of devian and when i make this command md5sum -c md5sum.txt i see Ok in some files but in others i see error I/O. in portuguese md5sum: ./pool/contrib/a/acx100/acx100-source_20060521-3_all.deb: Erro de Entrada/Saída de dados
06:09<fatal_>Tuplad: you can take a chance and install it, hoping that it will work.... but if the package is made for ubuntu, there are definitely no guarantees and you have to gamble.
06:10<fatal_>Tuplad: or, you can file a wishlist bug against exaile asking the maintainer to update to the new bug and wait.....

14:07<h2-gw>it took them almot 5 years to return a sane mimetype option handler, which thank god they finally have in crude form in iw/ff 3
14:08<h2-gw>but it's still crap compared to konqueror's
14:08<h2-gw>you have to manually set the path for the helper app each time, rather than just selecting from a list
14:08<h2-gw>although that is now much better in ff/iw than it was
14:09-!-path [] has joined #debian
14:09<h2-gw>as soon as konqueror gets the applewebkit rendering engine in it, I think it will be the way to go, but firefox extensions are really good

14:09<h2-gw>yes, there was a lot of talk about that crap
14:10<h2-gw>and the version in debian, thank god, was somewhat fixed, because the devs grudgingly accepted that full file system syncs every x seconds maybe isn't acceptable

23:21<miksuh>in paste comments you can see my sources.list

23:48<terabyte>hey all - I am having difficulties installing debian on a new fileserver I am setting up. The mobo is an ASUS P5Q and has 8 1TB SATA drives as well as a 10GB EIDE drive and a CD-ROM drive configured on the same IDE cable (this mobo only has a primary IDE, no secondary). When I try to install (using the etch 4.0r4 amd64 netinst CD) I get the "No common CD-ROM drive was detected" error message. I did some googling to no avail, booting in expert mode and d
23:48<terabyte>...driver didn't help. Any suggestions?
23:51<qq>put a common CD-ROM drive ?

23:52<newsense>terabyte: sure ya already set jumpers on ide drive and cdrom master hdd and slave cdrom
23:52<terabyte>I have installed debian before using this same drive, so I'm not sure why it's not being detected.

23:52<terabyte>I considered that the jumpers might be wrong - I know they are right on the CD-ROM but I'm not positive about the hard drive. I still get the error message when I unplug the hard drive though.

23:54<terabyte>hmm, I thought that only mattered for cable select, but I'll try that.
23:54<terabyte>thanks =)
23:54<newsense>never tried cable select but sure it must work
23:55<qq>it's depend of BIOS
