00:42<Sparky>Hi everyone! I have been trying to track two problems for about three weeks and I haven't been able to find anything on the web that fits what's going on.
00:43<Sparky>The problem exists on both a Tyan K8W server board with a 280 opteron
00:43<Sparky>and a asus a6km laptop with a ML-40 athlon 64 processor (2.2ghz)
00:45-!-allisterb [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:45<Sparky>it seems every minute or two there is a performance hit but top/htop does not show what process is allocating the cpu time
00:46<dmoerner>is it parking the hd heads?
00:46-!-allisterb [] has joined #debian
00:46<Sparky>i don't think, i should be able to hear that
00:46-!-panagos_ [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:47<Sparky>for a while i thought it was sar, but i have since removed that from cron
00:47-!-panagos_ [] has joined #debian
00:48<Sparky>also, every time there is a performance hit, any file menu dialog box that is open will close

00:49<Sparky>i'm running lenny with kernel version 2.6.26-1-686
00:49<Sparky>on both machines
00:50<Sparky>normally i can figure things out on my own but this one has me stumped
00:52-!-deniz [] has joined #debian
00:53-!-icman [] has joined #debian
00:53<deniz>does "We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
00:53<deniz>firestarter, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive:" mean that the updated version that is bugless will be brought to the testing going to stable part of debian even tho testing is frozen and the updated package is in unstable?
00:54-!-Christmas [] has quit [Quit: as the bell strikes twelve i say we say farewell]
00:55<blarson>deniz: Don't expect any fixes for non-RC bugs to go into lenny at this point.
00:56<deniz>blarson, is firestarter crashing a few min after being launched critical enough to debian standards because I find that pretty important
00:56-!-yvesC [] has joined #debian
00:57<deniz>(just asking, that came out a bit impolite)
00:57<Sparky>deniz, so firewall is causing the issue?
00:57-!-panagos_ [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:57<deniz>well read these bug reports and tell me wat they rely say because to my understanding it is being saidf that they are going to be put into lenny
00:57<blarson>deniz: Check the debian bug to see the priority it has been assigned.
00:58<chealer>deniz: no
00:58-!-panagos_ [] has joined #debian
00:58<Sparky>and being that there is a freeze on lenny, a fix would be available on the next debian release, correct?
00:58<deniz>for firestarter
00:59<deniz>for anki
00:59<chealer>deniz: where do you think that is being said?
01:00<deniz>"We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
01:00<deniz>anki, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive:"

01:00-!-dmoerner [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:00-!-allisterb [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:01<chealer>deniz: no, that doesn't mean that the fix will migrate to lenny
01:01<deniz>chealer, wat does it mean then?
01:02-!-alephnull [~alok@] has joined #debian
01:02-!-allisterb [] has joined #debian
01:02<chealer>deniz: it means that the issue will soon be fixed in at least one Debian suite.
01:03<deniz>wats a "debian suite"? does that mean the debian after lenny?
01:03<Sparky>i'm not sure if firestarter is the problem
01:03<Sparky>its not installed according to apt
01:03<kop>Is /etc/lvmtab needed in lvm2?
01:04<chealer>deniz: a Debian release/version/branch, such as stable
01:05-!-jm_ [] has joined #debian
01:05<deniz>chealer, o then i dont get wats the point of doing this whole stable thing and freezing and not upgrading versions if the repositories version wont get its bugs fixed, or am i missing something? cuz it seems anki developper only wants to make newer versions and not fix the lenny version
01:07-!-panagos_ [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:07-!-panagos_ [] has joined #debian
01:08<kop>deniz : The point is that lenny does not get promoted to stable until the bugs are fixed. Then, you get a system that works and does not change. (Of course, nothing's perfect, but the consensus is that stable is more stable than about anything else out there.)
01:08<chealer>deniz: in a freeze, only changes with a high benefit/risk ratio are allowed. otherwise, we bugs would continue to appear all the time, and there would be no point where testing becomes stable enough to be released.
01:08*kop will learn to use commas properly someday

09:21<jm_>ohh debian kernels have highmem enabled by default? that should work for 1G (heck one can use full 1G without highmem with custom kernel)
09:21<jm_>question is why doesn't it?
09:22-!-massmc [~massmc@] has joined #debian
09:22<stew>jm_: the -486 kernels are not highmem, the -686 kernels are HIGHMEM4G
09:22<crazyb0y>jm_: i use testing, and kernel 2.6.26-1 on all of my servers, there is no highmem support at the default kernel
09:22<jm_>stew: but he said he had 686
09:23<stew>jm_: that should explain why he is able to use more than 960MB
09:23<jm_>crazyb0y: maybe because it's 486 not 686 like stew explained
09:23<stew>and no, you can't use a full 1G with a non HIGHMEM kenrnel
09:23<crazyb0y>it's 686
09:23<jm_>stew: ahh of course, this is about 2nd desktop
09:23<crazyb0y>may i use 2GB with no highmem ?

09:25<stew>crazyb0y: what does "grep HIGHMEM /boot/config-$(uname -r)" return
09:25<crazyb0y>jm_: take a look here
09:25<jm_>i've been running custom kernel without highmem and with full 1G available for ages
09:26<stew>crazyb0y: CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y
09:26<crazyb0y>jm_: this is my first time that i dont use vanilla kernel on my servers
09:26<jm_>crazyb0y: like I said, yes, it's possible, kernel has options for it, but not Debian kernels
09:26<crazyb0y>i'm just bored to config everytime vanilla
09:26<stew>crazyb0y: so you do have highmem enabled
09:26<crazyb0y>stew: yes but why DMESG says that ?

18:12<deniz>dmoerner, ya but ive heard two things: 1)unlike ubuntu, you have to manually enable drivers 2)etchnhalf and lenny kernel don't include proprietary drivers and im not sure if there is a free driver for this card

18:12<dpkg>Firmware is required for the rt61pci and rt73usb drivers from the <rt2x00> project. Install the <non-free> 'firmware-ralink' package (etch-backports, lenny) to provide. Alternatively, manually acquire from, unextract and transfer the *.bin file(s) to /lib/firmware.

18:18<dmoerner>deniz: i did the second factoid in the channel. you could /msg dpkg ralink firmware to see that
18:19<deniz>dmoerner, so i can just get package "firmware-ralink" from backports and thats it??
18:19<dmoerner>themill: rmadison says sid has 0.13 where lenny has 0.12 so something is probably wrong with judd, or its designed that way
18:19<dmoerner>deniz: yes, and reload the drivers. the simplest way to do that is to reboot

23:37<Student> apache2-mpm-worker: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7-1) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch7 is to be installed
23:37<Student>what is this suppose to mean?
23:39<dmoerner>are you mixing lenny and etch?
23:39-!-angasule [~angasule@] has joined #debian
23:39<Student>how can i do that?
23:39<simonrvn>Student: it means you're doing something not kosher
23:39<kop>Looks to me it means that apache with mpm needs a newer lib6, but you're installing an older lib6.
23:39<dmoerner>Student: please pastebin apt-cache policy apache2-mpm-worker
23:39<Student>i am simply typing ---> apt-get install apache2
23:40<simonrvn>"simple" isn't always simple.

23:46<Student>ok i did post on pastezone
23:46<Student>i don't understand the root cause of the problem
23:47<dmoerner>Student: the problem is that you are trying to install lenny packages with etch libc6
23:48<Student>how can i get the etch version of this software?
23:48<dmoerner>Student: please pastebin /etc/apt/sources.list

23:53<dmoerner>Student: only etch is uncommented in /etc/apt/sources.list. how did you get these lenny packages on your system?
23:53<dmoerner>i ask because a downgrade is not possible. you will either have to switch all of your stuff to point to testing and dist-upgrade, or reinstall
23:53<dmoerner>unstable=sid but yes
23:53<Student>do you find any problem in that line?
23:55<Student>now what can i do about getting rid of un-wanted packages from my computer?
23:56<dmoerner>you have a mixed testing-stable system, which is a mess. you have two options. A) switch to "lenny" from "etch" in /etc/apt/sources.list and dist-upgrade, or B) reinstall
23:56<Student>i don't have any mixed thing, my only os is debian4 r4a and that is all
23:57-!-LoRez [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:57<Student>should i re-install my debian4 r4a?
23:57<dmoerner>that's not what your /etc/apt/sources.list says
23:57<dmoerner>"deb testing/updates main"
23:58<dmoerner>try removing that line from /etc/apt/sources.list and doing a update and upgrade
