01:50<kyle_>greetings. I'm having a bit of trouble after upgrading to lenny- I've got my debian box doing ip masquerading for a local network with shorewall. If I ever do a /etc/init.d/networking restart, the hosts behind the debian system can't connect to anything outside the network (although, they can ping things). Rebooting fixes it. ip_forwarding is on. Any ideas?

10:53<peej>I had a mental catechism that mirrored your answers.
10:53<Halitech>koollman, I just thought it should empty if its not being used ... so basically if its not in use right now it just sits there as files written to the drive and if/when it becomes full it just over writes what is there?
10:54<Halitech>koollman, so it being at 50% full won't have any effect on my system as far as speed goes?
10:55<cahoot>Halitech: maybe you should consider why swap is used at all
10:56<Halitech>cahoot, usually it starts filling when I'm doing a video re-encode and trying to do other things at the same time

11:00<OdyX>Halitech: "full swap" is not necessarily "swap is fully used"... it could be cache pages and such...
11:01-!-rickbot [] has joined #debian
11:03<koollman>Halitech: swap is used as a special way to 'extend' your ram, but it works differently than what you think. basically, when more ram is needed, one 'page' of ram is swapped to the disk, and the free ram page is used.
11:03-!-Guest84 is now known as ffws|hathe
11:04<koollman>Halitech: later, if the old page of ram is needed, it's read back from the swap to the ram (possibly provoking more swapping of other, unused pages)
11:04-!-dieg [] has joined #debian
11:04<koollman>Halitech: once the memory isn't needed anymore, the 'on disk' part doesn't need to be deleted (that would be a disk access, slow operation)

11:06<koollman>yes. but the point was, non-empty swap does not indicate bad performance. swapping (number of page to/from disk per second) is a better indicator
11:06-!-ant_ [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
11:07<koollman>swap usage means 'some time in the past, more ram was needed for something'
11:07<jthomas>Halitech you could i suppose run 'sync' as root; then run 'swapoff /dev/hdxy' to turn off the swap; then run 'swapon /dev/hdxy' to turn it back on... but agreed, it'll cause more slowdowns that way than just leaving it be

11:08<Halitech>koollman, ok so unless my ram and swap both become full and I'm noticing a big system hit, just let things run as is
