00:00<Cliffmas>hi i just downloaded the cd distribution of debian and i'm trying to create a VMWARE Virtual Machine.
00:00<stuart>Piet: so need to download/install ATI's drivers? Do they get bundled with distributions like NVidia's do?
00:01-!-sardyno [] has joined #debian
00:01<stuart>or is it strictly self service

00:02<stuart>Does debian include ATI
00:02<Cliffmas>i have to choose "other linux" but i can't find the version of the kernel
00:02<stuart>as it does nvidia
00:02<Cliffmas>which kernel is it ?
00:03<stew>stuart: debian provides free drivers for some ati and some nvidia cards. It doesn't provide the non-free drivers needed to get accelleration on some cards from either vendor
00:03<stuart>stew: will compiz likely play nice if I download ATi's driver?
00:04<stew>no idea
00:04<Cliffmas>2.6.26 ?
00:05<dpkg>Linux kernel versions, stable:, prepatch: 2.6.29-rc8, snapshot: 2.6.29-rc8-git5, 2.4: 2.4.37, 2.2: 2.2.26, prepatch: 2.2.27-rc2, -mm patch: 2.6.28-rc2-mm1
00:05<stew>that's not what you want
00:05<stew>judd: kernels
00:05<judd>stew: Available kernel versions are: trunk: 2.6.28-1-686 (2.6.28-2~snapshot.12850); sid: 2.6.28-1-686 (2.6.28-1); squeeze: 2.6.26-1-686 (2.6.26-13); lenny: 2.6.26-1-686 (2.6.26-13); etchnhalf: 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 (2.6.24-6~etchnhalf.8); etch: 2.6.18-6-686 (2.6.18.dfsg.1-24)

00:05<Cliffmas>allright thanks
00:06<Piet>Cliffmas: this is totally offtopic here, but choose ubuntu and 2.6
00:06<Cliffmas>i thought i'd choose other linux kernel 2.6.x ? why ubuntu ?
00:07-!-stuart [~stuart@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:07<Cliffmas>sorry if it is offtopic
00:07<Piet>since ubuntu is similar to debian, and there are templates for ubuntu, anbd i never had any issues with this combination on debian

14:54<patrikf>ozdeb: anything, call it "local" or "ozdeb" or whatever.
14:55<patrikf>ozdeb: many things in /etc are organized this way, mostly called directory*.d*/
14:55<ozdeb>patrikf, so I create a file called conf and in the I put the variable HIBERNATE= ?

14:56<patrikf>I'm on my desktop, so I can't check what I did =)
14:56<patrikf>anyways, the .d configuration directories mean that all files there are used – that's useful if package XY wants to modify settings, and package ABC wants to modify settings too, both can just drop a file in there
14:56<patrikf>(instead of potentially overwriting each other's settings)

16:14<patrikf>LiCeT: actually, there are quite some settings that you can't set in the GUI, because GNOME folks think they would just clutter the settings dialogs (with which they are certainly right to some extent)

17:37<deniz>is there a program that can make a backup copy of my flash's drive's contents every week into a folder and delete the contents that that folder had the last week so that I can have my data backed up without even worrying about it?
17:37<patrikf>deniz: make a script and drop it in /etc/cron.weekly
17:38<deniz>patrikf, is it hard to make a script?
17:38<themill>deniz: sounds like you should look at rsnapshot
17:38<dpkg>i guess rsnapshot is a filesystem snapshot utility, which creates incremental backups of local and remote filesystems, using hard links to save disk space. See also /usr/share/doc/rsnapshot/html/rsnapshot-howto.html and, or ask me about <rdiff-backup>
17:39<patrikf>deniz: no. it's just what you'd type into the terminal, just in a file (plus some other stuff)
17:39<patrikf>deniz: theoretically, rm -R /backup; cp /flashdrive /backup; would do what you want
17:39<patrikf>deniz: rsync might be a bit faster, because it won't remove and copy everything

23:44<victor>!dhcp client
23:44<dpkg>To set up a DHCP client in Debian 3.0 and later, edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and put "auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp" in it. Then do "ifup -a" or reboot. If you have trouble with 2.4.x kernels, try "apt-get install dhcp3-client" (instead of dhcp-client). In potato, same thing but without "auto eth0". See <kernel options for dhcp>.
