00:02<snogglethorpe> anyone know how gdm and/or gnome-session decides whether a language is "OK" or not? I can add something, say" ko_KR.EUC-KR" to /etc/locale.gen, then run /usr/sbin/locale-gen, and that makes gdm let me login using that lnguage -- but then something else (I think gnome-session) says something like "unknown language, using default (C) locale"
00:02<snogglethorpe>there don't seem to be any add-on language pckages for gnome or anything
00:02<snogglethorpe>so i dunno how it makes that decision, and how i can affect it...

00:08<willy_>Hi there!! My subject tonight is recompiling the Debian kernel -- in specific, on a new laptop machine I have that runs an AMD Turion 64 processor. The problem I've been having is that, no matter what I do, I cannot get the result to boot up.
00:10<willy_>Moreover, I have to force the power off after each try. The problem is that the machine hangs every time I try to boot it from my recompiled kernel.
00:11<snogglethorpe>willy_: what .config do you use?
00:11<snogglethorpe>willy_: are you sure you're correctly setting up the initrd stuff if you're using noe?

00:12-!-asdkj [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:13<willy_>snogglethorpe: I am sure only that there is no provision for an initrd facility in my own kernel. As to what config I'm using, it's one I created using MAKE MENUCONFIG from the old supplied one.
00:14-!-Bearman [] has joined #debian
00:15<snogglethorpe>willy_: hmm, since the debian kernels all assume initrd, I presume you took care to make sure all the necessary drivers are compiled in, rather than being modules (which most of them are in debian kernels)
00:15<snogglethorpe>does the debian kernel work, btw?
00:16<willy_>snogglethorpe: I honestly hsve no idea of whether I'm using MAKE-KPKG or not. I know only that it is installed.
00:16<snogglethorpe>willy_: er, i think you'd know... did you build your kernel using "make-kpkg kernel_image"?
00:16-!-QPrime [] has joined #debian
00:17<snogglethorpe>willy_: make-kpkg is highly, highly recommended btw...

00:20<willy_>snogglethorpe: Yes, I indeed have had two or three field days chasing the names of modules from LSMOD to ensure that they are compiled in. No, I didn't use MAKE-KPKG, mainly because I use merely MAKE.

00:27<Port>chealer: thanks a lot, you've pointed me in the right direction
00:28<chealer>eric_justin_allan: 1, if you don't have a fast connection to Internet and don't want the target PC to be monopolized during the installation.
00:28<willy_>anogglethortpe: All the same, I must say that it's probably worth a try.
00:29<snogglethorpe>willy_: usually I don't install _just_ my own kernels, but rather some debian kernels, and some of my own; if my own are proper packages, that obviously makes things easier

02:57<EmleyMoor>If I can reach a machine by ssh (even with the port different), should it be possible to forward X?
02:58<jamuraa>if you tunnel it through ssh, yes.

02:58<jm_>if X server allows it
02:58<jm_>sorry ssh server
02:58<jamuraa>make sure that (a) X11 Forwarding is enabled (ssh -X usually does this) and (b) your X11 server will accept the forwarding

10:48<PiklesOnFire>Ethaniel, why not install to ext3, then convert the filesystem to ext4 in place?
