01:16<el_isma>I've been all day trying to install debian on my netbook... It's been impossible... I can't get network on d-i... I don't know which image to use (because all the space available on the usb stick is 256MB)... is there any small image that will install a full base install that would allow me to boot that and hopefuly get network? Or am I doomed?
01:16<el_isma>this is the hardest debian install ever :(
01:18-!-scientes_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:19<Toxicshell>what is the notebook model ?
01:19<el_isma>Acer One 250
01:19<el_isma>and the wiki page... oh, it depresses me... It's there like "hey! it's so damn easy to install debian here!"
01:20<el_isma>but I boot what they tell me to boot, and get no ethernet, and get wifi, only that wifi doesn't associate to anything
01:20<el_isma>so it's a lie
01:20-!-moonlight [] has joined #debian
01:21<el_isma>I then tried using the latest version available, same deal

01:21<dpkg>The Eee PC (aka RM Asus Minibook) is a <netbook> designed by Asus. Linux models are supplied with <Xandros> and are not supported in #debian. To install Debian, see for installation and configuration details. See also <atl2>, <atl1e>, <rt2860 eee>. Mailing list: #debian-eeepc on
01:21<el_isma>It isn't an Eee
01:22<el_isma>though, asking there isn't a bad idea
01:22<Toxicshell>you can use ethernet ?
01:22<Toxicshell>or not ?
01:22<Toxicshell>just wifi ?
01:22<jm_>so it's a notebook, not netbook
01:22<el_isma>only wifi
01:22<el_isma>and it's really not working
01:23<jm_>ahh no it's netbook
01:23<jm_>which nic does it have then?
01:23<el_isma>jm_: It's "netbook" in the sense that it's small. Didn't know that only eee's are netbooks
01:23<jm_>el_isma: yup it is, I was just confused by the picture - I don't see why eeepc instructions won't help since it also has atom etc.
01:23<el_isma>jm_: Attansic Technology, Atheros AR8132
01:24<jm_>el_isma: can you get its pciid? lspci -nn

01:26<el_isma>jm_: no... That's what I'm trying to accomplish.
01:27<jm_>el_isma: so which part are you stuck on then?
01:28<el_isma>jm_: Trying to get network so it can download all the necessary stuff
01:28<el_isma>I've since downloaded the usual Debian CD... is there any way to boot the iso from the usb?
01:28<jm_>el_isma: if that requires a firmware it will not be trivial during installation phase
01:29<jm_>el_isma: yes, you can use unetbootin to convert ISO to USB image, or you can use GRUB
01:29-!-simNIX [] has joined #debian
01:29<sney`>or if you have a USB cd-rom you can even just install directly from that
01:29<jm_>yup, as long as your BIOS supports it
01:30<el_isma>don't have usb cd-rom
01:30<el_isma>I look into unetbootin
01:30<jm_>it doesn't have cdrom?
01:30<jm_>ahh of course, netbooks don't have that, silly me

01:36<chn>it would make a cheap nas
01:36<craigevil>el_isma: might try using the debianeeepc installer since it has the atheros drivers, its basicaly just the debian installer with a few things added
01:36<el_isma>craigevil: they just told me that in #debian-eeepc , I'm trying that now

01:47<sasdl>hi, i have a simple but important issue to report. what's the best way to do that?
01:47<jm_>el_isma_: don't thank me, I barely suggested anything useful
01:47<el_isma_>is the issue related to any particular package, sasdl?
01:48<sasdl>no, i don't know what package it will be associated with
01:48<ml|>sasdl: if it's a bugreport you want to file use reportbug
01:49<el_isma_>what is the issue? maybe we can help
01:49<sasdl>is it a terminal /command line tool or something i'll find on the desktop?
01:49-!-Lethalman [] has joined #debian
01:50<dpkg>i heard reportbug is used to submit bugs to the Debian <BTS>. Install reportbug, then run reportbug. Or on the web,, or see for some general info about using reportbug and/or for <debian-installer> bug reporting. Ask me about <report-bugs>.
01:50<el_isma_>it's a command line tool
01:50<sasdl>i'm getting files dated incorrectly on modified files
01:50<Lethalman>el_isma_, also graphical :)
01:50<el_isma_>Lethalman: really? cool :)
01:50<jm_>how did you verify that?
01:51<sasdl>dates are comming up with tomorrows date on them. something to do with (i think) utc vs what's the other one..
01:51<el_isma_>sasdl: check the mount flags on the device... noatime maybe?

01:52<el_isma_>I never pay attention to the modified time
01:53<jm_>is date reporting the right time?
01:53<sasdl>ya, not a huge issue for me at the moment, and since it's in the future it's probably ok for the applications i'm using that check modfied time, but fairly important all the same
01:56<sasdl>i might add that the desktop clock reads ok

01:57<el_isma_>sasdl: install reportbug
01:57<el_isma_>sasdl: aptitude install reportbug
01:57<el_isma_>sasdl: but it will ask you to assign the bug to a package. And I really don't know which one would be a good target...
01:57<sasdl>found a bugreport ... that will be it i'd imaging?

09:17-!-nexxen [] has joined #debian
09:18<themill>mischief: I personally don't like the idea of denyhosts editing /etc/hosts.deny and I'm quite happy for fail2ban to call iptables for me. But that's a pretty weak preference.
09:19<mischief>what's wrong with editing /etc/hosts.deny, themill?
09:19<dr|z3d>He likes to keep it all in iptables..
09:20<dr|z3d>hosts.deny is just one more place to manage.

09:20<themill>Automagically editing text files like that seems to be something that's fraught with danger. Folding user changes into automatic changes is a recipe for disaster.

09:21<jm_>themill: but it's also automatically adding iptables rules, no?

09:23<themill>yeah, but calling iptables is "atomic" in some way whereas editing the text file never can be. And there's no need to merge changes. fail2ban also keeps all of it's crap in the one table so you can just flush the entire table. We've seen a couple of cases in here where people have had tens of thousands of lines in /etc/hosts.deny because it got a little over zealous
09:24<mischief>well to use fail2ban i'm gonna need my host to get his rear in gear

12:45<lmc>Good evening, everybody. Can someone please tell me if something is wrong with the dependencies on Testing at the moment? I have too many broken packages at the moment...
12:46<azeem>lmc: testing is not guaranteed to be bug-free
12:46<kop>ml|, chaos: You can be root, but if you try to execute something that's in /sbin or /usr/sbin and those are not in your $PATH then the shell won't run them without a full pathname to the exec.
12:46<azeem>lmc: but maybe you can cite/pastebin an example?
12:46<chaos>kop i think /sbin /usr/sbin is by default in $PATH for root :s
12:47<lmc>azeem: I know about the non-guarantee on testing. Just wonder if I should accept the 497 package changes apt is suggesting me since last month's upgrade... :) it seems to be too many, and I wouldn't remove linux-image without a replacement (which is the case)
12:47<lmc>azeem: if there's a form to isolate this and report a bug, that's why I run testing.
12:47<ml|>kop: still don't get what you are saying, since i know that
12:47<kop>chaos: Yes, but not in a regular user's. So if a regular user does a "su" instead of an "su -" or "su -l" then it won't be in $PATH. That's my point.
12:47<dpkg>Do not paste more than 2 lines to this channel. Instead, use: or for pics. Use for large files (think tar.gz) up to 100MB. Remember to tell us the URL of your paste! Just use pastebinit (package) if you cannot cut & paste.
12:47<themill>lmc: apt-listchanges and apt-listbugs might help you here

12:50<kop>ml|, chaos: So, if you "su", then type "update-grub" it won't run.
12:50<ml|>kop: it does work
12:50<kop>chaos: We are not talking about the path to su, but the $PATH that you have after you do various sorts of su-s.
12:51<chaos>well i'm not doing any su cos i have no network yet only console and i need this fixed first before i add users so i can get the f*ck off the kvm so other ppl can use it :)

15:36<drakeman> hey, is true that in any linux distro, you cant remove 20thounsands files at the same time with a command like sudo rm *.pif (for example) ????
15:36<drakeman>it says that you get a message like "to much arguments"
15:36-!-nomeata [] has joined #debian
15:36<drakeman>or something like that.
15:36<drakeman>too may arguments.
15:36<petemc>you need to use xargs
15:36<dpkg>from memory, xargs is find's better half. "find . -type d -print | xargs ls -ld" for a trivial example. the -print0 and -0 arguments to find and xargs respectively are very important if your filenames contain spaces: "find . -type d -print0 | xargs -0 ls -ld"
15:37<drakeman>petemc, xargs works to remove the files ?
15:37<petemc>should do, yes
15:37<drakeman>petemc, how do i know th e limit of files for rm command?

17:33<ra12q>i all -- i've just installed debian stable -- and the thing won't boot -- it gets to printing "Loading, please wait..." and eventually timesout, dropping me to an (initrdfs) prompt, claiming the UUID device can'r be found. If I then reboot, and at the Grub prompt. delete the root=UUID_STRING part, and replace it with "/dev/sda1", I still get the same thing which is bollocks, as "/dev/sda1" *really* is the root device. Any
17:33<ra12q>thoughts as to what's causing this?

19:19<olet>and is that /dev/hdb ?

22:12<mantra>yeah probably
22:12<mantra>it loks like shit if they arent
22:12<clitalim>yes they also have no food
22:12<clitalim>which sucks
22:12<clitalim>what ever happened to that charity
22:12<clitalim>aids for africa
22:12<olasd>wow, being able to cram racism and arrogance in like 5 minutes is great
22:12<Arkenklo>would be a shame if the fonts on their $100 laptop does'nt look quite right
22:12<mantra>yeah it would
22:12<clitalim>olasd: you're right. sorry. I'll take my leave
22:13<mantra>i think the $100 laptop never happened tho
22:13<mantra>so its all good
22:13<mantra>except not for me, now im living like im in a 3rd world country
22:13<mantra>so what could have caused this?
22:14<mantra>any tests i can run?
22:14<Arkenklo>I think I get it now, mdadm is used for software raid, and lvm is used for, well, lvm
22:14<Arkenklo>I suppose the question then becomes, wich is better
22:14<clitalim>easily zfs
22:14<olasd>Arkenklo: they have different purposes

22:14<mantra>nothing is better than zfs NOTHING
22:15<Arkenklo>what about a raid containing a lvm
22:15<olasd>HAMMER is
22:15<olasd>anyway, that's way offtopic
22:15<clitalim>zfs is fucking DOPE!
22:15<mantra>yeah i wish it actually worked in the kernel
22:15<olasd>Arkenklo: well, yeah, you can do that
22:15<Arkenklo>unless it's possible to have multiple sub-root-directories in the same phsical partition?
22:15<mantra>does running it in FUSE take a performance hit?
22:15<olasd>mantra: it obviously does
22:16<olasd>I mean it's very high up in the VFS stack, so it's *slow*
22:16<mantra>well ill stick with good old default then
22:16<mantra>playing that low level isnt my thing

23:01<enouf>el: i believe the netinst wouldn't have kde stuff on it (it is only what 160-190MB in size) - IIRC, the installation guide mentions one would need larger available media when using something like 'tasks="standard, kde-desktop"' at the boot prompt. Do you have working net? you can easily apt-get install whichever you like - even re-run "tasksel" if you like
