00:18<southernc>you mean a text file from windows to vi in linux ?
00:19<sney^>vmware has an option for that I think
00:19<sney^>to allow clipboard crossover
00:19<southernc>n/m then
00:20<laber>well how to operate...
00:20<sney^>no idea. check the vmware options.

00:42<peterS>hacker_kid: yeah, just remove the symlink in /etc/rc2.d
00:42<peterS>hacker_kid: (or rename it to start with a letter other than 'S' - makes it easier to put it back where it was)

00:44<peterS>hacker_kid: sure. though I tend to use like z75heartbeat or something, the leading . is annoying in that it doesn't show up in a normal 'ls'

11:09<m2rt>Hey... I am having a problem with my second internal drive. It was on my old debian machine. I have some important data on it. When I put it into my current debian machine. It says that: Can not mount volume. You are not privileged to mount this volume.

11:12<jmarsden>? Use a shell if you are having issues, forget GUI stuff. at a shell prompt, type in su - # and provide the root pw. Then type in your mount command to mount the partition(s) on the drive concerned.

If you are just wanting to change the compilation options, ask me about <package recompile>, or see <uupdate> if sid is too old

23:27<dpkg>Nice one southernc, you did it!
23:27<southernc>1 hour and 30 minutes later
23:27<snogglethorpe>enouf: ugh, any time i try a kde app, I end up having to kill like 17 different background daemons it starts :(
23:28<southernc>snoggle you can configure what runs in control panel
23:28<southernc>by disabling stratups etc
23:28<snogglethorpe>southernc: dunno, but by default simply running a single app shouldn't start tons of daemons
23:28<southernc>so only certain daemons run
23:29<southernc>you talking about spawned child process's
23:29<snogglethorpe>southernc: no
23:29<snogglethorpe>southernc: well i guess they are child processes
23:29<snogglethorpe>southernc: but they stick around after the app exits
23:29<southernc>give me an example
23:29<snogglethorpe>kdeinit is one
23:29<snogglethorpe>hmm froget the others, but there are i think 3 that usually get started
23:30<snogglethorpe>not sure if i have a kde app installed right now to try
23:32<Slurb>can you make apt aware of programs installed by make install
23:33<southernc>no not really you have to make a dpkg
23:34<Slurb>well i am compiling gcc-4.4.1, do i have to uninstall all previous versions of gcc before installing
23:34<ml|>Slurb: it might conflict
23:35<Slurb>with previous versions?
23:35<ml|>judd: versions gcc
23:35<judd>ml|: gcc -- etch: 4:4.1.1-15 lenny: 4:4.3.2-2 sid: 4:4.3.3-9 squeeze: 4:4.3.3-9
23:36<Slurb>i am compiling on a lenny
23:36<southernc>then youyr using the wrong version and qwill have dependency problems
23:36<southernc>or trying to install rather
23:37<ml|>yes, maybe if you tell it to use the new, you might get away with it
23:37<southernc>im pretty sure when i tried it gave all kinds of issues
23:37<southernc>but i cant rwemeber what cversion
23:37<ml|>but yeah i don't think it will work either
23:38<Slurb>im thinking i leave them installed and install 4.4.1 over the top of it then it automatically thinks 4.3 is 4.4
23:38<southernc>because then you would go from upgrading gcc to about 30 other prerec's that it depends on
23:38<southernc>in a perfect world that would work
23:39<southernc>why do you want to upgrade it ?

23:41<ml|>hah why?
23:41<Slurb>it installs to usr/local by default
23:41<ml|>Slurb: gl
23:42<southernc>it should actually be installed to usr/bin if you want it system wide etc
23:42<Slurb>im going to leave gcc 4.1 and 4.3 installed as well
23:42<dpkg>If you want to laugh, use heh or hah or bwahahaha. lol doesn't sound like laughter at all and makes you look like an AOL user.
23:42<dpkg>Many would say that heh is #debian's favourite word, so not a good idea for your nick if you want hilighting to work. "heh" is not punctuation, so do not use it as such.
23:43<southernc>better ?
23:43<ml|>it should work fine from /usr/local/bin/

23:51<Slurb>my gcc dont even use the 2 cores
23:51<Slurb>just half my processor
23:51<southernc>then you gotta fix your bashrc
23:51<sney^>the -j option on make tells it to use more threads
23:52<sney^>gcc is unithreaded by nature, but if you tell make to -j2, then it'll run 2 gcc processes at once
23:52*Slurb travels back and enters the -j2 command
