10:50<dpkg>rumour has it, startx is a script that starts the X Window System , configure X before starting it. If the rest of X seems present, try getting xbase-clients. see starting gnome, or the way god intended X to be started. Issue 'startx <command> <xclient-options> -- <server> <xserver-options>' to specify specific client to start. Session will exit when that client exits.

13:49<Arcalyth>I'm trying to install fglrx and I'm completely lost because I'm using kernel 2.6.30. How can I patch my kernel to allow compilation of the fglrx module?
13:49-!-arw [foobar@] has joined #debian
13:50<Arcalyth>I know there are patches out there, but since the instructions are for Gentoo I don't know what to do
13:51<Arcalyth>and the version of fglrx-driver that's in sid right now refuses to install.. and last time I tried to get around it, I bricked my system.
13:51<sbyrne>Arcalyth: Are you on amd64?
13:52<sbyrne>Arcalyth: Yeah, I had the same issue this morning. I finally gave up and started using the radeonhd drivers. They do dual-head well now via xrandr, but 3D is lacking if you need that.
13:52<Arcalyth>Yeah I'd like to be able to play games. That's the whole reason I want fglrx
13:53<Arcalyth>had it working fine before with the instructions from but that version of fglrx no longer exists... I just blindly upgraded everything like an idiot >_<
13:53<sbyrne>Arcalyth: Did you try applying the patch you found for gentoo to linux-source-2.6.30 ?
13:53<Arcalyth>I don't know how
13:53<Arcalyth>Otherwise that would have been the first thing I tried
13:54<sbyrne>Arcalyth: aptitude install linux-source-2.6.30, untar it, patch -p0 <patchfile.txt or something like that.

22:20<xeon-enouf>bignose: check your hardware
22:21<xeon-enouf>!what's my hardware
22:21<dpkg>You can use lspci, lsusb, lsscsi, lspcmcia, lshal, hwinfo, dmidecode, and/or lshw, or even dmesg to find out what kind of hardware your machine might have, or you could crack the lid and look inside ... oooh, shiny! If you install lshw, run as root or sudo; "lshw -html > myhardware.html" and you'll have a nice HTML summation. See also <myram>.

22:32<Arcalyth>Hi, I installed the ATI catalyst 9.8 driver earlier, it installed on my kernel 2.6.30, but now World of Warcraft gives me a black screen when I play it in openGL mode.. I think it has something to do with my system being 64bit and there being no 32bit driver or something.. is it safe for me to symlink /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib32/
22:36<Arcalyth>Never mind. I tried that. cp says they're the same file.

23:03<sney>arcalyth: did you follow ?
23:05<arcalyth>No. I did it the ATI way. The debian way doesn't work with kernel 2.6.30.
23:06<abrotman>i thought there was an fglrx/.30 bug where it didn't work right
23:06<arcalyth>Catalyst 9.8 was released today, it installs fine

23:10<arcalyth>I just don't think the 32bit driver is working properly. I had catalyst 9.5 installed the debian way + a patch I found, and it worked until sid got updated and 9.5 was dropped... fglrx-glx-ia32 was removed from my system, then world of warcraft broke. tribes 2 works fine in wine though so I don't know what the deal is.

23:11<arcalyth>fglrx catalyst 9.8 is installed the ATI way and I direct rendering: Yes. I don't know if this is an issue with fglrx, world of warcraft, wine, or what, but I'm completely stuck
23:11<arcalyth>I'm also on amd64.

23:13<sney>the thing about supporting sid
23:13<sney>since it's by definition unstable, there are all sorts of wonky issues that can pop up and they're more or less guaranteed to be undocumented
23:13<sney>you shouldn't use sid unless you have the knowhow to dig yourself out when something breaks

23:37<arcalyth>and I've done about everything I could think of to fix this. I managed to fix fglrx to allow 3d acceleration but that doens't really matter if I can't play my games anyway. at least with the open source driver I can use xfce's compositor without massive slowdown.
