00:02<Lillymon>I've just realized m-a must be short for something. But I don't know what.
00:03<Lillymon>It's my first day.
00:03<sney>also, the bot (dpkg) knows a lot of these things
00:03<sney>I keep a query window open with him so I can refresh my own memory
00:04<Lillymon>Should I start using aptitude rather than apt-get?
00:05<gsimmons>Hydroxide: The FTBFS is also applicable to alsa-source 1.0.21+dfsg-2.
00:05<sney>Lillymon: there are advantages and disadvantages but it really boils down to personal preference, and what your fingers type automatically when your brain goes "I want to install <foo>"
00:07<Lillymon>I'll stick with apt-get then.
00:07-!-eljefe [] has joined #debian
00:08<Lillymon>Right, m-a is doing things with ALSA. Yakuake is fantastic for this.

00:18<gsimmons>Lillymon: Apparently the alsa-source package uses old versions of Linux kernel headers. Until #540307 is resolved, you would be required to compile from upstream sources ( For your information, Linux 2.6.32-rc1 and later have ALSA 1.0.21.
00:19<Lillymon>Fantastic. Would I be depressed if I asked for an ETA on #540307 (which I think I'm about to subscribe to).

13:11<caja>please help installer debian sid
13:12<dpkg>hmm... sid is the <unstable> version of Debian. It's named for the destructive neighbour kid in Toy Story. It is NOT an acronym, but is sometimes backronymed Still In Development anyway. Ask me about <unstable>. Do not use sid unless you have the skill to find your way out of the mess that broken packages may put you in. It will never be released. See <sid faq>.

14:37<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> simply boot to your Debian install disk, live CD or whatever else you have, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), then mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev), then chroot into it (chroot /target) then run "mount /proc ; update-grub && grub-install /dev/hda". 21:11<quimkaos>chesus 5 dvd's?
21:11<dpkg>from memory, netinst is a small CD image with which you can install Debian. If, during the installation process you have a working Internet connection, you can install more packages straight away, otherwise, you will have a base install and more packages later. See See also <check iso image>, <dialup install>, <usb install>, <pppoe install>, <netboot>, <bf>, <installer>.
21:11<quimkaos>are the last 4 on repositories?
21:12<abrotman>last four ?

21:13<sney>if you really want a full DVD, you won't need anything for the install that isn't in #1 or maybe #2. Everything else can be downloaded on demand later
21:13<sney>full DVDs can be torrented relatively quickly, as well. that's probably why you think it's a good idea. I won't stop you. some people don't have access to fast debian mirrors.
21:14<quimkaos>exactly my question
21:14<quimkaos>well i have a 10Mb connections so i think it's np
21:16<quimkaos>and i'm just pissed with ubuntu distro... i nead a real os
21:16<sney>yes, debian is a lot more flexible than ubuntu
21:16<quimkaos>and i hope more stable
21:16<sney>ubuntu represents a very small subset of the things that are possible with a debian or debian-based OS
21:17<sney>as long as you don't have any bleeding edge hardware that requires you to use testing, it will be very stable.
21:17<quimkaos>and i'm restarting after 6 years without linux
21:17<sney>and even if you're using testing it's pretty good, I haven't seen any serious horrible bugs in testing lately
21:18<sney>6 years? wow, I went 3 and that felt like forever. You'll be learning everything from the start again
