00:18-!-Woet [] has joined #debian
00:19<Woet>How would I enable web access to a file in someones home directory which is chmodded to 700?
00:19<PovAddict>running a webserver under his account?
00:19<Woet>hmm, might be a little bloated
00:19<Woet>running 80 webservers
00:20<PovAddict>I was 5% serious
00:20<Woet>and having 80 IP's since they all bind to port 80 :p
00:20<Woet>i thought of 2 ideas
00:20<Woet>either running a script that copies the file to a webdir
00:20<Woet>or having a PHP script that logs into FTP and outputs it
00:20<Woet>the copying means it has a delay, the FTP means it's slow
00:21<PovAddict>logs into the user's FTP? how would it do that?
00:22-!-alephnull [~alok@] has joined #debian
00:23<Woet>well, the users have FTP access
00:23<Woet>so it would be a PHP script logging into their FTP
00:23<Woet>downloading the file and outputting it
00:28-!-cheal [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

00:33-!-alvarezp [] has joined #debian
00:33<PovAddict>Woet: for that, the script would have to know their FTP password
00:33<Woet>hmm, yea
00:34<PovAddict>if it knows that, it might as well 'su -c "cat file"' with the password...
00:34<Woet>i think ftp will be my best bet
00:34<Woet>hmm, yea
00:34<PovAddict>why don't you use different permissions?
00:34<Woet>because that would be quite insecure :p
00:34<PovAddict>chmod 640, chgrp www-data?
00:34<PovAddict>how's that insecure?
00:35<Woet>that would also be a possibility
00:35<PovAddict>or chmod 640, file's group being the user's group, and the webserver belonging to the user's group
00:36<PovAddict>that is, -rw-r----- woet woet, and www-data user being part of the woet group
00:36<PovAddict>but maybe that's too involved :P
00:36<Woet>that sounds like a good idea
00:37<Woet>i'll think it over
00:37<Woet>thanks :p

10:47<themill>pavelr: right, so just the changes and dsc files is not enough. In fact, they contain no information that is useful to the maintainer at all. Either an nmudiff or interdiff might be easiest. You could also upload your package to and put the link to the package in that bug report.
10:48<themill>pavelr: it looks like that package is a little unloved though which isn't a good thing... don't hold your breath for the maintainer picking up your work :(

22:25<jon_>Hey guys, I've added a bookmark to my Places menu in Gnome 2.2.8, and I want to edit it's details because i messed up the folder
22:26<jon_>I found this page
22:26<abrotman>in which version ?
22:26<jon_>gnome 2.2.8
22:26<jon_>and im running testing
22:27<jon_>that page says that they are stored as bookmarks in ~/.gtk-bookmarks
22:27<jon_>but i dont have a folder called that in my home folder
22:28<jon_>Does anybody know how to edit or remove the bookmarks under the Places folder?
22:29<abrotman>you mean 2.28 i hope
22:29<jon_>yes, sorry abrotman
22:29<jon_>and it's a fresh install. I just put it on this morning
22:29<abrotman>just making sure :)
22:29<alephnull>Is there a top-level package I could install to pull in the X libs ? I need enough to run a Java-based installer.
22:29<jon_>trying to mount a remote ftp drive so that i can work on the files locally. if there's a better way, let me know
22:30<abrotman>jon_: Applications->System Tools->File Browser ... Bookmarks->Edit Bookmarks
22:30<abrotman>like that ?
22:30<abrotman>alephnull: 'xorg'
22:31<jon_>abrotman: that's perfect. if only you could get there from the desktop... thanks for your help
22:31<abrotman>jon_: wait .. did it help or not ?
22:32<abrotman>jon_: on mine .. if i open the "foo home" .. under the Places menu, there is an edit bookmarks
22:32<jon_>abrotman: that worked for me. I could remove the crappy ones and just remake them
22:32<alephnull>Thanks, abrotman.
22:32<jon_>abrotman: on mine, from the desktop, under the Places menu, the bookmarks just appear, and there's no option to remove or edit them. but I can get at it from the file manager, which is fine
22:33<abrotman>jon_: file a mean/nasty bug!
22:33<abrotman>jon_: yeah .. i only found it by poking around
22:35<jon_>abrotman: is it actually kosher to file a mean bug like that?
22:35<jon_>abrotman: i mean, I didn't write it lol. I suppose as long as I'm civil about it
22:35<jon_>i guess that's what makes linux great
22:35<abrotman>i was kidding .. you could file a bug to possibly include the "Edit Bookmarks" option on that Place menu from the main bar
22:35<jon_>that would be nice
22:35<abrotman>like a feature request bug
22:35<jon_>good call, i'll do that
22:35<jon_>hey, i have another for you if you have a minute
22:36<jon_>this morning during my install, i did something to postgre that messed it up
22:37<jon_>now whenever i change my system through aptitude or synaptic, i get an error that there's a problem with the postgre configuration, even though it isn't installed
22:37<jon_>the first post there, in the first quote box is the message that i get
22:37<jon_>after my install, I removed postgre, because I don't use it, and it added about 10 seconds to my boot time

22:37<jon_>since then, i've been getting this message
22:37-!-afurlan [~afurlan@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
22:38<abrotman>so it's not actually removed ?
22:38<abrotman>can you put the full error in ?
22:39<jon_>I can
22:39<jon_>give me a moment

22:42<jon_>abrotman: here is the full error message
22:42<jon_>now, I have postgre and all related packages installed
22:42<jon_>but for some reason, whenever I do anything in either aptitude or synaptic, after the operation is finished, I get that error message
22:42<jon_>as if postgre is improperly configured
22:42<abrotman>jon_: and you want them removed ?
22:43<jon_>ideally yes, but i would settle for getting rid of the error message
22:43<jon_>ive tried to uninstall them already
22:43<jon_>and the message still shows up
22:43<abrotman>and if you aptitude remove postgresql ?
22:43<jon_>so i reinstalled them
22:44<jon_>let me try that - ive previously done it only through synaptic
22:44<abrotman>you could put an 'exit 0' after the shebang in the /var/lib/dpkg/info/postgresql-8.4.postinst
22:46<jon_>abrotman: I tried to uninstall postgresql in aptitude, and got the following terminal output:
22:46<jon_>apparently, the packages are currently only partially installed
22:46<abrotman>see my comment above

23:55<faheem>TheCheeze: file corruption issue
23:56<TheCheeze>faheem, it does it for every file though

23:57<faheem>do the files corresponding to libpcap0.8 look at all abnormal?
23:58<TheCheeze>i assume so, it all looks like text
23:59<faheem>TheCheeze: rename all the files corresponding to that pacakage to *.orig
23:59<faheem>Then remove and reinstall that package if possible
23:59<faheem>if removal is not possible then do
23:59<faheem>apt-get install libpcap0.8 --reinstall
23:59<TheCheeze>but it does it with every package... including the updates in the update manager
23:59<faheem>TheCheeze: yes, i know
