00:00<massmc>simonrvn: I got a vps and installed debian, all the dns is right for A cname.. just wanted my host mask in IRC to show that also.. any ideas?
00:00<simonrvn>i already answered you
00:01<sney>some IRCnets offer a vhost service as well, but I don't think oftc does
00:03<simonrvn>hostmask... oftc does
00:03<massmc>i'll try them, thanks
00:04<simonrvn>this has nothing to do with your dns settings, btw.

09:07<sdhoeppner>I'm wanting to add some 73GB Seagate SCSI drives to an old PII server of mine on which I'm going to be running Lenny. It has a built-in dual channel Adaptec AIC-7895 controller. What I'm concerned about is given the age of the system board and SCSI BIOS, is if it will see the full size of the disks, and if not, would I still be able to boot Lenny? I know once Lenny is booted the SCSI...

13:31<cahoot> IIRC there's an #debian-ppc
13:31<cahoot>possibly on freenode
13:31<leeleelee>not a ppc mac
13:31<PovAddict>there's a #mactel-linux here
13:31<leeleelee>cool, i'll try that

14:46<Titan8990>lontra, most window managers have a --replace option, e.g. sawfish --replace

14:47<lontra>Titan8990, but how can i make it permanent
14:47<Titan8990>check the man pages or docs for your particular window manager.... however I am not sure how well replacing metacity is going to work out (if at all)
14:47<PovAddict>you want gnome to start up sawfish automagically?
14:47<lontra>PovAddict, yes
14:47<PovAddict>instead of metacity?
14:47<lontra>PovAddict, yes
14:47<Titan8990>lontra, you can use the gnome's session manager to launch sawfish --replace.... or maybe .xinitrc

17:37<kmap>Yes, so it's like this: the source package diff is long gone
17:38<kmap>But the binary diff package, which you are trying to remove, is built from the diffutils package
17:38<kmap>And it must not be removed.

20:10<PovAddict>I have had many apps crash since I installed Debian, and there was never a proper sequence of steps that caused it, and that I could reproduce
20:10<PovAddict>you're lucky enough to have found a reproducible bug
20:10<PovAddict>(well, reproducible on your machine :P)
20:10<locsmif>PovAddict: I am willing to do so, but in the mean time, it would also be convenient if I knew about an IceWeasel support channel, I don't think the #firefox guys would appreciate IceWeasel questions.

20:11<locsmif>Running squeeze/sid

20:12<locsmif>A large amount of tags
20:12<locsmif>And a large tree structure. The crash happens now and then
20:12<locsmif>Not always..
20:12<PovAddict>I have only the default bookmarks
20:12<PovAddict>I use iceweasel for sites where konqueror doesn't work
20:12<locsmif>Ah... ;-)

23:46<goodger>jscinoz: he means that the GNU userland's components are tied together
23:46<goodger>Lillymon: correct
23:46<jscinoz>goodger: ah
23:46<faheem>jscinoz: er, i was saying the GNU userland is tied together

23:46<jscinoz>faheem: ah i misunderstoood
23:46<faheem>not GNU userland and linux
23:47*jscinoz waits for aptitude to finish doing stuff
23:47<jscinoz>reinstalling all 2603 packages i had installled is fun
23:47<jscinoz>yet its the easiest way to rebuild my dpkg databse afaik
23:47<Lillymon>It would be weird if GNU and Linux were tightly coupled, given that GNU was originally supposed to run on the Hurd.
23:47<jscinoz>I wonder what hurd is like... i should shove the debian/hurd port ina KVM virtual machine and see what happens

23:48<Lillymon>I wonder if Hurd will ever reach a stable release. It's been in development longer than eirher of my cousins have been alive.
23:49*PovAddict looks it up
23:49<faheem>Lillymon: re the kernel upgrade, that depends
23:50<faheem>apt will upgrade within a given package version of the linux-image package
23:50<Lillymon>faheem: On what?
23:50<PovAddict>Lillymon: seems to be as old as me
23:51<Lillymon>PovAddict: But not as old as me. In development since 1990, I was born in 1985.
23:51<goodger>Lillymon: it's as old as me, also
23:51*jscinoz wonders if a debian/XNU distribution would be useful...
23:52<goodger>I don't see the need
23:52<goodger>linux is as small or large as needed; why replace it?

23:52<goodger>I can see the case to port freebsd to linux

23:52<Lillymon>That's what I've said a lot about Hurd, who would switch from Linux or BSD to it?
23:52<PovAddict>you can't "port freebsd to linux", both are kernels
23:53-!-Hideo [] has joined #debian
23:53<goodger>PovAddict: freebsd is also an OS
23:53<PovAddict>so bsd userland on linux kernel?
23:53<goodger>(not just the kernel, I mean)
23:53<goodger>the hardware support would improve
23:53<Lillymon>Well it's been done the other way around.
23:54-!-gregorio [~gregorio@] has quit []
23:55<goodger>yes, and the reasoning behind this escapes me

23:59<kop>goodger: Well, if you want, e.g. the pf packet filter you can't use linux. It's just too closely tied to the kernel. And pf is, imo, flat out better than iptables -- judged from a readability standpoint. It's plenty powerful too.
