00:01-!-jar [] has joined #debian
00:01<jar>Is there a way to set apt to automatically install -dev packages when pulling libs?
00:01-!-Celtiore [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:01<PovAddict>but it already does the opposite
00:01<jar>i know this
00:02<jar>It would be nice to set apt in "developer" mode so it always knows to pull -dev packages.
00:02<PovAddict>I wouldn't want to "apt-get install somekdeapp" and have it download all the KDE development libraries!
00:02<jar>Another great reason not to use KDE.
00:02<PovAddict>it goes for everything...
00:03<PovAddict>but I know you're intentionally missing my point to have an opportunity to bash KDE :)
00:03<PovAddict>I have 428 installed packages in 'libs'
00:03-!-rjent [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:03<jar>-dev packages aren't going to instantly double that.
00:03<PovAddict>probably will
00:03-!-rjent [] has joined #debian
00:04<jar>No, probably won't.
00:04<PovAddict>why not?
00:04<jar>For 2GB of packages you're saving roughly 300MB
00:04<jar>While that's awesome.
00:04<jar>It'd be nice to have the **option** to always pull -dev
00:05<PovAddict>where do you get that idea?
00:05<PovAddict>I picked a random lib... freetype
00:05<PovAddict>lib is 432KB, dev is 739KB
00:05<PovAddict>(download, not once installed)
00:05<jar>That just proves my point that it will HARDLY double it.
00:06<jar>It's not like I'm asking debian to go arch and include dev in the main package.
00:06<jar>just looking for an **option** that isn't enabled.
00:06-!-arw1 [foobar@] has left #debian [Leaving.]
00:06<PovAddict>you said "aren't going to instantly double that" when I mentioned package counts, not size, anyway
00:07<PovAddict>anyway, I don't think apt even *knows* what's the corresponding -dev package for a library
00:07<jar>that's depressing.

04:15<gsimmons>Zsoci: Use aptitude, as sney advised earlier.
04:16<Rhapsody>Ugh, I can't finish setting up Opera properly. Both the Debian Wiki and Opera Knowledge Base point me to "" to get the GPG key for Opera's repository, but JUST ISN'T THERE. So I still get an error every time I run aptitude.

13:49<Titan8990>Erikinc, its not really a big deal unless you were packaging it. I am no expert but I believe the correct path is /usr/include/
13:50<dpkg>Debian follows the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. The filesystem is categorized by purpose, not application. This allows, for example, the easy and efficient deployment of a read-only /usr area across a number of thin clients. See or install the 'debian-policy' package (/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/*), or
