00:00<ken__>just a pointer or URL to something documented would be appreciated on LUKS/dm-crypt and preseed
00:00<faheem>ken__: might have more luck with an appropriate mailing list
00:00<faheem>is this debconf preseeding, or something else?
00:00<ken__>faheem: yes
00:01<faheem>ken__: i'd have thought there was somewhere more specialised then
00:01<ken__>faheem: i need to setup about 300 servers, with debian. i already have a PXE booted, full net install, with raid install alreday configured properly, but i need LUKS
00:02<faheem>ken__: sorry, i've no idea
00:02<ken__>unfortunately, the available documentation i can find through the usual channels is lacking =(
00:02<faheem>ken__: there isn't a specialist forum then?
00:02<ken__>faheem: i have no idea
00:02<faheem>a sort of general - i want to install 1000 boxen with Debian/Ubuntu
00:02<faheem>sort of forum
00:03<ken__>faheem: no idea
00:03<faheem>ken__: take a look at the Debian mailing lists
00:03<ken__>faheem: i can't imagine there's more than 10 people in the world configuring hundreds of debian servers simultaneously
00:03<ken__>faheem: yet alone with encryption ;)
00:04<faheem>ken__: on the contrary, i believe it is quite common. are you using fai or something else?
00:04<ken__>faheem: it'd be a very specialized forum, i'd imagine, and i'm probably guessing the 10 people or so who would be on that list probably wouldn't need much help on many of the tech things
00:04<faheem>even if you are not using fai, you could do worse than try thei ml
00:04<basiley>faheem - if they have SAME specs, just clone deployed OS'es image to others PCs
00:04<ken__>faheem: fai overcomplicates the process, and isn't really that great
00:04<faheem>is LUKS an encryption thing?
00:05<ken__>linux unified key system
00:05<faheem>ken__: i see. never heard of it. sounds fancy
00:06<ken__>faheem: not really -- its a standard way of storing encrypted master keys and the associated encryption parameters for crypted block devices
00:06<ken__>faheem: its specialized in that there's not a lot of people who are going for full hard drive encryption, and then also doing a large number of installs
00:07<ken__>faheem: and unfortunately, google has failed me on this one
00:07-!-firefox [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:07-!-vaporware [~vaporware@] has joined #debian
00:07<faheem>ken__: possible there is nothing out there. but for very specialized stuff, a general channel like this is simply not your best bet

00:08<ken__>faheem: er, well, -- i'm assuming there's one master level guru out there who has @ on this channel
00:09<ken__>faheem: irc is always my very very very last fallback
00:09<faheem>ken__: they have to be paying attention
00:09<faheem>ken__: i've got very good help on irc, but it is highly channel/topic specific
00:10<faheem>btw, see
00:10<basiley>ken__ they usually called "Debian mastermind[overlord]", i guess ;)

00:12<FredRoots>and do you know a way to use irssi in latin-1 ?
00:13<ken__>FredRoots: why would you want to change the charset ?
00:13<FredRoots>my vds is in latin-1 and my test server in utf-8
00:13<ken__>FredRoots: if there's a way, it would have to deal with changing the locales
00:14<FredRoots>and i use nano to edit latin-1 files threw putty
00:14<FredRoots>ken__, how can i do that ?
00:14<FredRoots>i'm on a test server i don't care to take risk of damages
00:15<ken__>FredRoots: i don't remember the precise package, but it would be done like this: dpkg-reconfigure <package_name>
00:15<ken__>FredRoots: probably locales or something like that
00:15<ken__>i don't know
00:16<ken__>too many specific names out there to remember, best to understand (and know) the abstracts of accomplishing something than the specific names involved ;)
00:17<FredRoots>dpkg-reconfigure locales works
00:17<ken__>why does anyone even use the latin1 charset ?

02:35<HardwareFreak>I just compiled a new kernel and ran lilo. It's installed, all that is good. Haven't rebooted yet though. The main reason is, linux.old points to an old kernel I don't want as my backup #2 kernel. I need to point linux.old at another kernel. I'm assuming this is a link, but I've never used the link command before, and I'd rather not screw this up learning the link command. Kernels are...
02:35<HardwareFreak>...kinda critical. ;)

02:37<Nemoder>ln -s sourcefile targetfile
02:37<HardwareFreak>I just realized that my previous 2.6.31 kernel was overwritten by the new 2.6.31 I just installed! So I guess I'm just flat stuck with the old 2.6.24 I'd rather not use as my backup kernel. Oh well..
02:38<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: thanks for the command line anyway
02:38<Nemoder>ls /boot
02:38-!-debalance_ is now known as debalance
02:38<Nemoder>oh same kernel ver, ya that will ovewrite
02:38<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: yeah, that's how i just found out the previous 2.6.31 was overwritten
02:38<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: how can I get around that?
02:38<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: for next time around?
02:39-!-KaGaMi [] has joined #debian
02:40<Nemoder>is this a custom kernel you compiled?
02:40<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: yes
02:40<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: I only use custom kernels.
02:40<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: always compile my own
02:40<Nemoder>are you using kernel-package tools to build a deb?
02:40<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: yep
02:41<Nemoder>then you know as much as i do :P
02:41<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: and with I'm using source instead of debian
02:42<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: the 2.6.24 is ok and will work. I'd rather have had my most recent previous as my backup.
02:43<Nemoder>I just keep a stock kernel as backup and the old debs i built
02:43<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: hay, I can't recall. Is the boot parameter for IDE append="ide-core.nodma=0.0 ide-core.nodma=0.1" correct for all 2.6 kernels?
02:43<Nemoder>duno, switched sata ages ago
02:44<Nemoder>hm i wonder if --append-to-version option in make-kpkg gets around the version
02:44-!-foxes [flash@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:44<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: LOL, that's why I built this new kernel. Got a SiI 3112 cheapo PCI card and 500GB WD SATA on the way, and plan to migrate from my current 40GB IDE disk to the new SATA disk. I didn't have the SATA driver in the old kernel, and I never use modules.
02:47<Nemoder>well that's why i like to keep a stock kernel installed as backup since it includes everything
02:47<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: and since I still need to boot the IDE drive for now, I need the boot options because my IDE disk has problems booting in UDMA mode. I boot it in PIO, the have a cron script change it's mode to UDMA using hdparm much later on.
02:48<HardwareFreak>Nemoder: that kinda makes sense. If not for this versioning issue I'd have no problems. Although, like I said, the old 2.6.24 I have lying around does work.
02:49<Nemoder>well you might try that option to see if you can make a custom version number too
02:49<Nemoder>that should prevent overwriting if it works

08:07<BdN3504>hi, i am using Debian lenny 2.6.26-2-486 on an old amd k6-400 based system with the gigabyte ga 5ax mainboard
08:07<BdN3504>i have to network adapters installed, but only 1 is working

08:08<BlackFate>BdN3504, is it listed in ifconfig -a?
08:08<BdN3504>serial: 00:e0:7d:de:57:75

08:12<BdN3504>i tried adding blacklist 8139cp to the modprobe.d/blacklist
08:13<BdN3504>but that didn't work
08:13<BlackFate>BdN3504, blacklist 8139cp and add to /etc/modules the 8139too driver

20:15<jon2>hey here's a question - i've lost the nm-applet daemon in my top panel in gnome. it's not in any of the menus or in the Add to Panel dialog, so i can't seem to re-add it to the panel. When I run nm-applet from the terminal, I get a warning saying that nm-applet "could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken." The odd thing is that nm-applet is listed in startup applications, but still doesn't launch, presumably
20:15<jon2> because of that error. I've tried reinstalling the network manager package, but to no avail.

20:16<isak>jon2, you can try "/etc/init.d/network-manager restart" and pray :)
20:17<jon2>isak, thanks - that did restart the connection and refresh my ip address, but it didn't quite solve the problem - i still can't get the nm-applet daemon to show up in the panel where it ought to be. it complains that something else is already using the NetworkManagerUserSettings service
20:18<isak>jon2, no idea, it pops up automatically when i start network-manager here.
20:19<jon2>nvm fixed it - turns out that nm-applet runs inside of the notification area, and that i had accidentally removed the notification area. it couldn't start, because it was already running and i just couldn't see it. thanks though
