17:38<matt1606>hello, I'm running debian sid and I'm actually observing a strange beahaviour of some applications which are randomly segfaulting with error 4. I've discovered this problem while writing some threaded program using custom buit itpp library. after executing the program was crashing randomly with segfault error 4 in the main itpp lib. I'm also an kde user and some of kde apps like krunner plasma-desktop were crashing recently with the same error
17:38<matt1606>but either in qt lib or kde libs. I decided to debug my program using gdb and supprise: no segfault during the execution in debugger mode. so I decided to debootstrap lenny and run my program in chroot env. I've recompiled the libs and the problem doesn't occur also in lenny. is it an libc or gcc4.4 specific problem, anyone who can confirm this behaviour?

17:42<matt1606>simonrvn: I was observing the transition to eglibc
17:43<mase>matt1606 have you run memtest, just to be safe its not an hardware error (memory)
17:43<simonrvn>mase: he just said it doesn't happen in lenny.
17:43<matt1606>I've run valgrind and it segfaulted too
17:43-!-jeflui [] has joined #debian
17:44<simonrvn>just sayin'
17:44<matt1606>sorry, you were mentioning about memtest86 of course :]
17:44<matt1606>and I mistakenly written about valgrind
17:44<simonrvn>it's a good point though, eglibc might be more sensitive to h/w issues
17:45<simonrvn>(though i don't see why)
17:45<matt1606>the problem is that when I run the same program without pthreads it runs normally
17:45<matt1606>so it can be a libc/pthread problem
17:45<simonrvn>wouldn't be the first time ;)
17:46<matt1606>I don't know how or where send the bug report against it
17:46<dpkg>Bug Tracking System for Debian packages, or to go directly to the bug page for a particular package/bug, try or . aptitude install reportbug, and check out <querybts> too. Users of unstable and testing are required to check the BTS. Useful for unstable and testing: aptitude install apt-listbugs apt-listchanges
17:47<simonrvn>i had been seeing issues with "illegal insctruction" crashes, but i haven't seen any recently (last 2 weeks).
17:47<mase>matt1606 but i would also try memtest86. without pthread your aplpication is smaller and it might just be a case of random to get into a damaged region of memory
17:47<simonrvn>matt1606: you have updated recently, right?
17:47-!-gnufan [~srw@] has left #debian []
17:48<matt1606>in the very beginning I was thinking that itpp lib can be not thread-safe
17:48<matt1606>yes I'm up to date
17:48<matt1606>mase: what could I observe it were random segfaults during exec
17:49<mase>matt1606 you told other applications crashed randomly, right?
17:49<matt1606>masse: I've taken the same seps of testing either in sid and lenny, in lenny the probelm doenn't exists
17:50<matt1606>masse: It cannot be the memory corruption probelm
17:50<simonrvn>matt1606: seems you probably nailed it... check the bugs for libpth on the BTS
17:50<simonrvn>or whatever library name it is for pthreads
17:51<simonrvn>i'd check libc6 too
17:51<matt1606>main pthread functionality is in libc, to my knowledge
17:51<matt1606>I'll double-check on this
17:51<simonrvn>you're probably right
17:51<mase>its strange because signal 4 means "illegal instruction", its not a "simple" segvault
17:52<simonrvn>'segfault' =) . indeed.
17:52<mase>ups, sorry
17:52<simonrvn>np :). no need to be sorry :)
17:52<matt1606>I'll cehck the BTS tomorrow, but tell me what to report?
17:52<simonrvn>check it before you report anything
17:53<matt1606>yes off course :
17:53<simonrvn>it might already be there

18:27<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on See <smart questions><errors>.
18:28<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>I have a problem with network connection, but it my ISP fault
18:28<icebrain>what's the problem?
18:29<mase>when i suspend a computer to ram which was in terminal mode (no xserver) i have a problem after resuming; the monitor is "dead" (suspended). it does not matter what graka is used...
18:29<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>so, I am thinking about changing TTL, cuz 99% of websites can't finish loading and reading data, even if they are displayed yet
18:30<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>so, I can see a webpage, but I can see loading message still in firefox

18:33<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>and maybe in some internal network those routers don't incrase TTL :|
18:34<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>it is good idea? and if I could try in our opinion... can u tell my how can I do it?
18:34<icebrain>routers aren't supposed to increase it, they're supposed to decrease it! the packets start with, for example, 64, and each router will decrease it by 1
18:34<icebrain>bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV: maybe you're having DNS problems
18:35<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>sorry - I'm not English :P meant decrease (--TTL) ;)
18:35<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>I've installed dns cache deamon
18:37<icebrain>bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV: afaik, the linux tcp stack uses 64 for the TTL, which isn't very high
18:37<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>but it is true - I had have to install this, cuz waiting for resolving domain name was killing me
18:37<icebrain>bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV: have you tried changing the your main dns server?
18:37<icebrain>bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV: OpenDNS is nice
18:37<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>I even can't check trouceroute :| I get my router at first position and 54 stars and message "send: operation permited" at end
18:38<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>yes I've changed it to opendns - still I had problems
18:38<icebrain>well, you can test changing the TTL by echo'ing the number to /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_default_ttl
18:38<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>but if I visit cached domains it works faster, but sometimes the data transver hangs
18:38<icebrain>don't know if it'll help, soz
18:39<bKB1Bf53KaScxekjhV>thanks... checking
18:40<icebrain>if you cat it, you get the current TTL
