04:21<dhbiker>hi there
04:22<VI>hi, can someone tell me... where can I download the driver for an ethernet card? winbond electronics corp w89c940 I tought the lenny's kernel could recognized but seems not :(
04:22<valdyn>!which driver
04:22<dpkg>To work out what module you need to load for your PCI card, try pasting the output from "lspci -n" into . To determine the driver currently associated with an Ethernet interface, ask me about <which ethernet module>.
04:22<valdyn>VI: newer kernels for lenny are at
04:22<dhbiker>emm why are there 5 DVDs for debian :O
04:23<valdyn>dhbiker: because debian is the largest coherent software collection on earth
04:23<cahoot>progs + source for a large number of archs?
04:23<VI>thanks :)
04:23<dhbiker>oh ok
04:23<dhbiker>so its worth downloading
04:24<cahoot>you only need the netinstall if you want to install
04:24<valdyn>dhbiker: no, not worth downloading it all
04:24<dhbiker>btw how many disk space is required... i have one 10GB ext4 partition

04:26<valdyn>dhbiker: make it 20G if youre not an expert
04:26<valdyn>dhbiker: resizing later is some pain
04:26<dhbiker>thats problem
04:26<cahoot>dhbiker: you already have some linuxvariant installed?

04:26<dhbiker>currently mint

04:27<valdyn>dhbiker: this quarduple boot system must be painful too
04:27<valdyn>dhbiker: why dont you play with new distros in a vm?
04:27<dhbiker>indeed it is

04:33<Student>for example right now i am getting something like --> kernel panic -not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
04:33<Student>as mentioned, it is possible that it could be a hardware problem
04:34<valdyn> VFS: cannot open device sda or unknown block must be above kernel panic -not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

05:06<twb>Student: editing what?
05:07<Student>well pressing "e" at the choice of user mode and operating system
05:07<twb>Student: OK, so you're editing the entry from *within* grub, rather than after booting.
05:08<twb>Are you using GRUB 2 or GRUB Legacy?
05:08-!-Black47 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
05:09<twb>I'm pretty sure GRUB Legacy never supported saving edits you make that way
05:09<twb>The normal way of making permanent changes is to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
05:09<twb>GRUB 2 *might* be able to remember changes you make from within the bootloader itself, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.
05:10<Student>i have problem booting my OS
05:10<Student>and it was booting well for a year
05:11<Student>every time i try to boot it, it comes up with a different error message

05:12<dpkg>it is certain
05:12<twb>Student: anything is possible

05:14<Student>but the computer hangs , and it says Kernel Panic
05:14<Student>yes i booted the install CD
05:14<twb>Student: why did it say it panicked?
05:15<Student>well at one time the screen goes black and keyboard start flashing

05:16<Student>in the Graphical Rescue mode, it starts loading data from CD but get hang in
05:17<Student>well i don't know what could be the problem with the hardware when there is no message in bios
05:17<twb>Get a normal live CD, and try to boot it.
05:17<twb>That is, not the install CD.
05:17<Student>what is a normal live CD?
05:17-!-flower [] has joined #debian
05:18<twb>Debian Live, Knoppix, the Ubuntu Desktop Install CD, the CentOS5 Live CD, anything like that.
05:18<Student>ok let me check that out
05:18<twb>The Debian install CD isn't very good for booting up a purely live rescue system.
05:18<dpkg>An operating system that can boot and run directly from CD. Linux-based examples are Knoppix and Ubuntu. Useful as a rescue CD or for showing off to your geek friends. Debian has its own Live CD (, ask me about <debian live>.
05:18<Student>i should google Debian Live?
05:18<twb>!tell Student -about debian live
05:19<ml|>it seems you might have done something while mucking around in you system and did not notice
05:20-!-dr|z3d [~dr|] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
05:20<Student>yes it is possible
05:21<twb>Student: if you can't even get a live CD to boot, you should start swapping in new hardware to find out if there's a problem component.
05:21<Student>the debian live site is down for me
05:21<twb>Student: get a different live CD, then. It doesn't really matter which one.
05:21<ml|>and/or what valdyn said about static charge
05:21<Student>twb: i am not sure what to swap in , ummm let me check the HD first
05:22<twb>Student: I would check the memory first.
05:22<ml|>with a livecd ;)
05:22<twb>Well, yes, check it *after* you fail to boot a live CD
05:22<Student>umm good pointers
05:22<Student>let me check the mem first
05:23<ml|>Student: don't go into that system try livecd first is what I would do the memory and hardware last...
05:24<ml|>if you go in now you might make things worse, one thing at a time
05:24<twb>My advice is operating on the assumption that this system can't boot ANYTHING reliably. If a Live CD boots OK, then you have just fucked up your boot configuration.

09:38<dpkg>from memory, build-essential is a package designed to help you create executables and build Debian packages. If you get errors saying gcc cannot create executables or can't find header files like stdio.h, you need to "aptitude install build-essential". If you don't plan to compile things, you don't need this package. Ask me about <qotd49>.

23:27<kop>evanbd: Just the usual, ping -n against an IP number, check the routing table, use 'getent hosts foo' and 'dig foo' to diagnose dns problems. (I stick with stable to avoid such problems.)

23:28<evanbd>kop: Web browsing (iceweasel) works fine.
23:28<evanbd>kop: As does IRC, obviously :)
23:28<kop>evanbd: Is there more than one network interface?

23:29<kop>evanbd: iptables -L say anything about firewall rules?
23:30<kop>evanbd: Maybe java and pidgin are currently broken?
23:30<evanbd>kop: Nope. And unless something really weird is going on, the only firewall, NAT, etc, is a Tomato box that was working earlier.
23:31<evanbd>kop: No, I was using those packages out of testing on a mixed stable/testing install earlier.
23:31<evanbd>kop: Part of the reason I decided to go fully testing on the new install; too much out of testing already for my tastes.

23:35<dr|z3d>evanbd: you could install wicd
23:35<dr|z3d>might help, might not. worth a shot.
23:37<evanbd>dr|z3d: I'd rather not have any such program involved unless there's a good reason for it. But I'm not used to Debian installing automagic things that don't work without good reason, so I thought I'd ask before just kicking it to the curb.
23:39<icebrain>evanbd: you're using testing, breakage is expected. but I've experienced many bugs in n-m, so I prefer wicd, which has been pain-free 'till now, even in unstable
23:39<newsense>evanbd: if you want to manage a wireless interface use wpasupplicant
23:39<dr|z3d>evanbd: the good reason for wicd being that it replaces the network manager with something arguably more robust.
