00:57<gerzel>I have a question about using SSH to log into my home computer from the internet. I can do it when I'm behind my own router but don't know how to adress it so I can logon from outside. I was wondering if you knew how or could point me in the right direction.
00:58-!-yves [] has joined #debian
00:58<edhunter>gerzel: forward the port u use for ssh (default is 22) in ur router

01:02<apollo>Hello. :)
01:03<apollo>bit of an odd question, but can anyone point me to a mirror for the amd64 image of squeeze?
01:04-!-cahoot [~radix@] has joined #debian
01:04-!-edbian [] has joined #debian
01:05<edbian>Because my ssh server is accessible via the internet I get random login attempts all the time from random bad people. Is there anything I can / should do about this?
01:05<jmarsden>apollo: Every Debian mirror should have the amd64 version, as far as I know. So try # as an example.
01:05-!-maxtothemax [~maxtothem@] has joined #debian
01:05<jm_>edbian: there are tools to ban them, alternatively run it on a different pot
01:05<jmarsden>edbian: You can run ssh on a non-standard port. You can run various tools that try to packet filter such people, denyhosts being one of them
01:06<apollo>I tried the official list on the Deb website and the amd64 folder was empty xD
01:06<edbian>jmarsden, Is denyhosts a program? Some setting on the ssh server?
01:06<jmarsden>edbian: If you want to get really serious, you can try some sort of port knocking so you don't seem to have any ports open when people scan you.
01:06-!-maxtothemax [~maxtothem@] has left #debian []
01:06<edbian>jmarsden, I don't think I can do that. I just have a basic home use linksys router
01:07-!-mode/#debian [+l 369] by debhelper
01:07<jmarsden>edbian: denyhosts is a package in Debian, whose one line synopsis is "a utility to help sys admins thwart ssh crackers"
01:07<edbian>jmarsden, Sounds like that's for me!
01:07<jmarsden>apollo: Why are you messing with the mirrors directly anyway -- is aptitude not working for you?
01:08<jmarsden>And what "amd64 folder" are you talking about?
01:10<apollo>jmarsden, here's what I'm looking for; an .iso to burn, stick in my drive and install squeeze. Unfortunately it needs to be a full install. The "netinstall" won't work for me.
01:12<jmarsden>Oh. So not a mirror, just download for an iso. You need CD1. You looked... here: ?
01:13<apollo>yeah. empty
01:14-!-apollo [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:14<jmarsden>OK. Mirrors don't generally have the testing ISOs, so you asked the wrong question originally, I think. I suspect the ISOs on cdimage are being regenerated about now.
01:14-!-mbruins [] has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
01:14<jmarsden>Why wouldn't a netinstall work, if you can download the full 650MB ISO??
01:14<Nemoder>the i386 images are up, just no amd64 yet
01:15<jmarsden>apollo: ... Hmmm, he went away...

05:43<mjk>Hi! Anyone knows why "klipper" (tried testing (4:4.3.4-3) and unstable (4:4.3.4-4)) does not show an icon anymore? Even with --icon foobar.png. And if foobar.png doesn't exist, it doesn't even complain. I'm using fvwm only, no KDE.
05:44<mjk>The problem is that klipper now pops up an annoying action window on each selected URL, and if there's no icon, I can't configure it (properly). I found out that "IgnoreSelection=true" in ~/.kde/share/config/klipperrc fixes it, but it would be nice to fully configure klipper.

If, during the installation process you have a working Internet connection, you can install more packages straight away, otherwise, you will have a base install and more packages later. See See also <check iso image>, <dialup install>, <usb install>, <pppoe install>, <netboot>, <bf>, <installer>.

12:13<dwessell>dr|z3d: It is not.
12:13<jmarsden>dwessell: You may want to think about using a testing (aka "squeeze") CD instead of the one you have. That will include a newer kernel which is supposed to have support for that NIC. Downside: you'll be running a testing version of Debian, not stable...

12:14<dr|z3d>We can maybe get him just the newer kernel, perhaps, as a deb, with associated headers and the like, no?

12:14<dr|z3d>dwessell: lspci identifies the device?
12:15-!-scientes [] has joined #debian
12:15<dwessell>dr|z3d: I believe so. I went to the interactive shell, ran lspci, and it does show up as a Ethernet controller.

12:16<jmarsden>dwessell: Adding a second (different) NIC to that machine would also be a workable solution, if that is practical for you. If the machine is a desktop with an open PCI slot, that could be a cheap and simple way to go -- borrow an older NIC from another machine just for the install...

12:23<dwessell>So tell me if I'm wrong here. BUt barring adding new hardware. It sounds like the easiest thing to do, is do an install of the base system. Then upgrade the kernel?

12:24<dr|z3d>dwessell: Easiest is just to download a newer kernel and install that, in my view. Others may differ.
12:24<chealer>dwessell: that or to install testing directly. though I am not sure that providing the firmware during the install will install it permanently and have your card working once you have an updated kernel.
12:24<themill>kmuto claims that device requires 2.6.29+ although the kernel in lenny will claim to support it.
