03:14<opticon>anyone around
03:14<colton>How accurate is the resolution provided by clock()?
03:14<spike>Does any one know what kind of compatability exists between Debian and windows games / software?
03:15<colton>I think that the compatibility is very low.
03:15<colton>Like, you won't find WOW for debian.
03:15-!-alephnull [~alok@] has joined #debian
03:15<colton>or excel.
03:15<spike>So really i would still need to maintain a windows pc for all my games?
03:16<colton>Or mac maybe.
03:16<spike>Planeshift is wow for linux isn't it,
03:16<opticon>u might find wow for mac
03:16<spike>i dont play wow
03:17<musca>what about wine? some apps (and even games) work with it.
03:18<opticon>i tried with wine but its to old for most new app's
03:18<spike>Can you get linux games? ive never seen one but i live in New Zealand so i don't see much that dosn't Eat grass
03:18<cahoot>if gaming is of great importance to you might consider sticking to win
03:19<opticon>for image based backups for debian what would be good?
03:19<spike>Win dosn't play the games i like anymore either
03:19<cahoot>why the opening question then?
03:20<spike>Easy answer...
03:20<spike>wanting to remove the constant need to run multiple pc's with seperate hardware due to microsoft compatability shifts
03:21-!-gianlucasnauzy [] has joined #debian
03:21<spike>i was lead to beleive linux distros are more legacy freindly
03:21<spike>ie something they once supported continues being usable
03:21<spike>could have been led astray
03:21-!-gianlucasnauzy [] has quit []
03:22<opticon>it all depends on what you want to do
03:22<spike>i want to no longer be dependent on microsoft
03:23<spike>and be able to upgrade my PC without needing to buy new OS's
03:24<cahoot>spike: FWIW linux still uppdates kernel version 2.4 (9 years since first release)
03:24<edbian>spike, With linux you can DEF upgrade your PC. You won't have to BUY new O
03:24<edbian>OS's but you will have to update the one you're using
03:24<colton>Here's what's wrong with gettimeofday: I can't instantiate the timezone structure. It's telling me: (error: 'tzp' was not declared in this scope")
03:24-!-PhrostByte [] has joined #debian
03:25-!-edbian [~ed@] has quit [Quit: Bye]
03:25-!-sukmakelana [~sukmakela@] has joined #debian
03:26<spike>And what programing language would i use in linux?
03:26<spike>im guessing i need to get away from .net since its microsoft?
03:27<Gathond>colton: and is that variable declared?
03:27<colton>I think that the kernel's mostly written in c. But you can use a panoply of languages in linux. c/++, c#, python, you name it, you can use it on linux.
03:28<colton>I'm not even calling the function and it gives me the error. All I have is: timezone *tzp = NULL;
03:28<spike>written in c huh... hmm were can i get a non compiled linux kernal?
03:29<Gathond>right so the colton thing is a bot
03:29<colton>It' slike it doesn't even kjnow that the timezone stuct exists.
03:29<Gathond>or just not making much sense
03:29<colton>a bot?
03:29<Gathond>that is wrong
03:30<Gathond>you just declare a timezone POINTER there, not an actual timezone struct
03:30<Gathond>unless you add make it point at something
03:30<colton>You can google for the sources. It should come right up.
03:30-!-phrosty [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:31<colton>I don't understand what you're saying.
03:31<Gathond>are you sure you should be programming C then:)
03:31<musca>spike: the kernel is maintained at, but _every_ linux-distribution delivers the source

03:33<colton>where could I find the sys/time.h file on my pc (i.e., in what directory)?
03:33-!-rzyz [] has joined #debian
03:33<colton>(absolute path)
03:34<Gathond>no idea, whereever your system has the c library headers
03:34<Gathond>probably /usr/include
03:34<Gathond>but your build environment may override that
03:34<spike>is there like a linux newb channel?
03:35<spike>and thanks musca
03:36<cahoot>spike: you don't actuallt *need* compile anything
03:37<spike>nope but Debian hass all the software i need for microcontrollers and then someone said the kernal is in c so i figured i might be able to dump linux into my embedded applications
03:39<spike>im sure it wont be that simple otherwise there would be a lot of embedded linux
03:39<spike>but worth an attempt
03:39-!-gdb [] has joined #debian
03:39<spike>and at current download rate is going to take 3 years to download debian so meh, plenty of time to play with a kernal
03:40<cahoot>I believe there's quite a lot of embedded linux
03:40<colton>In the sys/time.h file on my pc, struct timezone is surrounded in the #ifdef __USE_BSD #endif preprocessor directives. Could this by why I can instantiate the timezone struct?
03:40<colton>*can't instantiate
03:40-!-davyg [] has joined #debian
03:41-!-allu2 [] has joined #debian
03:41<colton>There's also a comment which says that the timezone struct is obsolete and ought never be used . . . What's the alternative?
03:42<spike>I havn't seen any that hit our shores yet but ill take your word for it, and that additionaly means its possible.

11:00<jad_jay>Except the hostname file and command
11:01<themill>jad_jay: it's quite non-trivial to do. Most things should just use /etc/hostname, but they won't. "/msg dpkg hostname" ; grep -r /etc oldhostname

18:00<dpkg>Request For Package is the way to ask for a piece of software to be included in Debian. See, the section on that page "Adding new entries with "reportbug"" is a good place to start. Technically, RFP is a wishlist bug filed against "wnpp" with a title beginning "RFP: ", ask me about <wnpp>.
18:00<themill>JairunCaloth: basically, start by running the command "reportbug wnpp", but you might want to check to (a) see if it's already filed and (b) look at the normal format these things take

22:49<terr_>I'll warn - this may sound like a stupid question! I'm looking to install Linux in another machine. Now I've done this many times before. The thing is I've always made a boot disk from one of the disk images then booted up the machine from the FDD and proceeded with the install. This next machine does not have an FDD. I can go get one - but I really don't think I need one. I have a couple USB keys here. I've never used a USB key in
22:49<terr_>life. What is the general proceedue to set up booting from the USB? Now the machine in question has an OS but its windows and I sure ain't interested in that. I'll be swapping out that disk and starting fresh with a new one and this means I can install the new HDD into one of my other machines which do have FDD's then do the install there then swap the HDD. DO people here have an opinion which procedure is least likely to lead to grie
22:50<abrotman>!usb install
22:50<dpkg>Yes, it is possible to install Debian from a USB stick/thumbdrive/pen drive/key, as long as your system's BIOS can boot from USB. Details are in the Installation Guide, see . To download USB stick images, ask me about <install debian>. (Older, outdated article at BIOS can't boot from USB? Use
22:51<terr_>I have some other thoughts as well. I might want to go into a VM machine. WHat is the status of the managers? I havn't looked for a couple years but I use to run VMware for this
22:53<terr_>abrotman: this machine is on Debian but the last upgrade was botched! No way it was ready for prime time.
22:53<terr_>I'm thinking I'll get the new machine runnign then get myself another HDD and install to that and put this old HDD in a saftey deposit box

23:00<abrotman>so you're going to try it ?

23:04<jmarsden>terr_: If you need to ask, then yes, stick with stable.

23:06<terr_>abrotman: for the most part I don't need the latest and greatest. Even now I just can't install python-blender and Qcad and I want to focus on the apps not the systems admin
23:07<jmarsden>terr_: Then run stable and if you need testing or sid, run one of those in a VM, or both at once if you have the RAM :)

23:13<jmarsden>terr_: If you want a full thin hypervisor solution run xen. But that's a lot more work to set up than virtualbox-ose. The -ose version os open source, so don't complain too much about Oracle/etc, it is free software.

Went to Australia, Met a bunch on unknow buddies and stood in a circle and said - I want to rent a cheap machine and we went from there. I put Linux in, VMware, Installed Oracle, wanted to kick over the blackstrap java installer they used when this should be a tar operation. 23:18<jmarsden>vmware is free of cost for at least some versions nowadays anyway. Not sure what your licence would get you, there are multiple "vmware" products now...
23:19<jmarsden>So if you are familiar with it and like it... OK, maybe that's a good reason to use it :)
