07:34<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often be able to come up with a solution where apt-get just gives up. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). Like apt-get, it can also remove or purge one package at the same time as installing others all from the command line or at the Y/n/q/? prompt using its interactive resolver, making it much easier to recover from broken dependencies.

13:38<trimordiah>so, the problem: i just installed the lxde version of debian, i modified sudoers so that my user don't need a password; the trouble is in pcmanfm: when i click on a partition on the left, it tells me that it runs 'pcmanfm -mount $hal_device' as root without asking a password (so far so good, a simple warning), but then it tells me i don't have the permission to browse that folder :/

So I installed debian and setted up postfix + dovecot everything is working I have domain, it works perfect from outside, but when i m in lan mine domain name is not accessible it points to mine modem... 17:04<fred1_>wolas, sounds like your 'modem', is really a router doing NAT.. so yes, your outside 'static' IP is assigned to the router, not to your internal machines

17:04<morph3k>hold on
17:04<fred1_>you'd need to setup inbound port mappings in the router if you want outside clients to be able to access services inside your network
17:04<james__>You can write it yourself, Zlasher.
17:04<petemc>22:01 < Zlasher> I have this perl script..
17:05<fred1_>and for internal clients, they'll need a way of accessing the services by their internal IP
17:05<wolas>fred1_ i yes i understand that outside clients are happy but not lan users :)
17:06<morph3k>that is the error i get when i try to run deluge

17:06<Zlasher>My script dosn't work (?)
17:06<morph3k>via apt-get install deluge-torrent
17:06<fred1_>wolas, perhaps you need to isolate the 'server' machines from the 'client' machines, have them on seperate internet connections
17:06<petemc>Zlasher: in case it wasnt clear, i was suggesting that you type "perl <name of your script>" in a shell, to see if it runs

21:54<MidnightAssassin>Hey guys
21:55<MidnightAssassin>Hey, I got a question. Do any fo the unstable or testing releases come with GNOME 2.28?
21:55<MidnightAssassin>any of the *
21:57<sney>judd: versions gnome
21:57<judd>gnome -- etch: 1:; lenny: 1:2.22.2~5; squeeze: 1:2.28+4; sid: 1:2.28+5
21:57<sney>MidnightAssassin: ^
21:57<MidnightAssassin>So Sid has 2.28. Alright, thanks guys
21:57<sney>and so does squeeze
21:58<MidnightAssassin>lol nice
21:58<MidnightAssassin>I just hate how Lenny is smoewhat outdated
21:58<MidnightAssassin>somewhat *
21:58<sney>we prefer the term 'well-tested'
21:58-!-doobiean [] has joined #debian
21:59<MidnightAssassin>Hey there
21:59<sney>if it's just your personal desktop, there's no reason you can't just use the testing dist. stable exists for people who *need* that stability
22:00<MidnightAssassin>Ah, okay

22:02-!-ehren [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
22:03<MidnightAssassin>sney - That figures. I just have a laptop I use for school and general stuff. And seeing as I'm pretty adeptt with Linux and BSD, a simple slip-up on the OS's behalf should be no problem. But when it comes to servers, you can't quite afford a slip-up as such
22:03<MidnightAssassin>adept *
22:05<MidnightAssassin>I was using Lenny at first, and that turned me off Debian for a while. But a mate told me that testing and unstable were more recent. Ya put two and two together, and you assume it comes with the latest GNOME
22:05<MidnightAssassin>God I hate the older GNOME releases
22:06-!-freex [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:06<sney>I don't really like gnome at all
22:06-!-unlisted [~unlisted@] has joined #debian
22:07<MidnightAssassin>KDE4 is cluttered and overdone, KDE3 is too stale, Xfce is a bit jittery, and Lxde is a blatant ripoff of GNOME that barely allows you to do anything.
22:07<MidnightAssassin>That leaves GNOME

22:08<MidnightAssassin>Besides, it's like how some grow up with Windows, others grow up with Mac or Linux. I began with GNOME, and I've grown accustomed to GNOME
22:08<sney>yeah fair enough
22:08<MidnightAssassin>But my problem with KDE4 doesn't lie in it's alien feel and operation.
22:09<sney>by default it looks very vista-y
22:09<MidnightAssassin>True that
22:09<MidnightAssassin>With a bit of config, you can have a Vista/7 lookalike
22:09<MidnightAssassin>But then again, GNOME can be made to look like Vista/7 much easier
22:10<MidnightAssassin>Emerald, GnoMenu, and some custom themes
22:11<MidnightAssassin>Hey, is there a non-netinstall disc for Squeeze?
22:12<MidnightAssassin>I haven't got a connection to netinstall Debian. :\

22:13<MidnightAssassin> - This looks right
22:13<kop>Ugh. I find that debian assumes a decent net connection to deliver security updates.
22:13<sney>apt-based distros assume a decent net connection for a lot of things
22:14<sney>I abandoned debian altogether when I was stuck on dialup for a year-ish
22:14<MidnightAssassin>Go figure
22:14<kop>sney: I didn't, but had a dedicated dialup line.
22:15<sney>you're more patient than I
22:15<kop>sney: Yes, some things would take days.
22:15<kop>It's sorta sad, because there's a whole lot of the world without decent net access.
22:15<MidnightAssassin>apt-get distros are hard to migrate from. I tried out openSuSE and Arch, and it was somewhat annoying
22:16-!-freex [] has joined #debian
22:17<MidnightAssassin>kop - When my net slows down, my computer's activity does, too. With updates and whatnot, I end up running over our download limit. So I'm stuck with 7kb/s speeds for the rest of the month.

22:18<kop>MidnightAssassin: I pay extra for a decent isp that gives me a real net connection with static ips and no restrictions. They also know the tech and you can reach someone intelligent need be. It's worth the money.

22:19<kop>MidnightAssassin: Chicago. But they're nationwide.

22:41<kop>jar: My big gripe is the lack of config files, and the choice to use "workspaces" over "virtual desktops" that one can mouse into by bumping the edge of the screen. The latter is fixable, if you try really hard. The former is not. The only way to configure gnome is with gui tools, which is so lame.
