00:23<twb>Gods, I hate grub
00:24-!-artista-frustrado [] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
00:24<sney>I kind of miss lilo in a strange way
00:24<sney>and I don't understand grub2 yet through I'm sure I'll get used to it
00:24-!-aranax [~aranax@] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
00:24<twb>update-grub doesn't want to Just Work from a rescue system, because grub-probe can't find the root device.
00:25<twb>Give me "simple and stupid" extlinux any day
00:25<kevix>twb: thanks
00:25<sney>yeah, you have to mount /dev and /proc to make that work, iirc
00:25<jagsph>snet: you can still use lilo
00:25-!-snogglethorpe [] has joined #debian
00:26<sney>I don't miss it enough to actually use it
00:26<twb>syslinux 4.0~alpha supports btrfs, so I'm gonna roll a .deb for it and try it.
00:26<twb>Haha, ^K in grub2's emacs editor causes qemu to core dumb
00:27<snogglethorpe>echo 1 > /proc/sys/fs/fingers_crossed
00:27<snogglethorpe>hm, or should that be echo crossed > /proc/sys/fs/fingers
00:28-!-kevix [] has left #debian [Leaving.]
00:28-!-anton [] has joined #debian
00:29<snogglethorpe>twb: they probably use some vastly weird processor-model-specific hack that saves 0.0001% on the time required to clear the line
00:29<twb>sig_wall: OK, inside the ramdisk, which now contains those three modules, I can manually modprobe libcrc32 and zlib_deflate, but not btrfs.
00:29<twb>FATAL: Error inserting btrfs (/lib/modules/2.6.32-2-amd64/kernel/fs/btrfs/btrfs.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
00:29<twb>...dmesg contains no info about the failure.

00:33<twb>sig_wall: did you get this working on .32, or .33, or something else?

00:37<sig_wall>i think that there are not all dependent modules are in depmod :(
00:39<twb>If I lsmod from a booted .32 system, after just mount -t btrfs /dev/hdb2 /mnt, I can see only those modules you mentioned are dependend on by btrfs.
00:40<sig_wall>yes but i think there may be some symbols that is exported by other modules, hm
00:41<sig_wall>can you add break=premount to command line & insmod btrfs.ko manually and see dmesg ?

00:42<twb>sig_wall: since I get dropped into an initramfs shell, I can just examine dmesg by hand.
00:42<sney>I just tried to read up on the differences between b-tree (as used in btrfs) and b+tree (as used in ibm jfs) data handling and I got all MEGO before I finished the first paragraph
00:42<twb>sig_wall: I did dmesg -c; modprobe btrfs; dmesg -- no output from the last one.

00:45<sig_wall>twb: modprobe may do nothing, try insmod
00:45<twb>sig_wall: modprobe made the failure message on stderr, the one I pasted above
00:45<twb>But I'll try an insmod
00:45<sig_wall>and another, system insmod, you may add it with hook :)
00:46<twb>I'm installing .33 from experimental, to try that in tandem

03:31<sid>it's a laptop
03:32<jm_>sid: you can boot from CD with grub nowadays, or you can use hd install method
03:33<twb>jm_: I think he's saying that his bios is set to boot the HDD first/only, so he can't boot the CD/USB key/whatever directly.
03:33<twb>jm_: but he CAN boot grub off the HDD, and then maybe use that to chainload the CD
03:33<jm_>twb: yeah, the above was short for chainload from cd
03:33<sid>should i comment out the lines of menu.lst in boot folder
03:34<jm_>no, just interrupt grub and type commands manually
03:34<jm_>c to get the prompt IIRC
03:34<twb>jm_: oh, sorry.
03:35<jm_>twb: naah, it was described very ambiguously

12:23<shiznatix>Hello. I am trying to install the proprietary ATI drivers as described here: but it doesn't seam to work. If I add in a section to the xconfig file as shown it has no effect and if I add driver "fglrx" it breaks x saying that it can't find this module. I have tried doing the steps twice to no avail. Where can I go to get this to work properly?

12:43<test>I'm working on a util for reading/writing images(e.g. similiar to dd). I'd like to put a front end on the app and was thinking about just using a simple CGI script to display the results in a browswer. the problem I'm hitting is the write/read operations take about 3-5 minutes and when I start the operation they block and as a result the web page isn't displayed until the operations complete. this is a nonideal solution, ideally I'd like to display a progress b
12:44<test>I don't do much GUI programming I'm more of a system level guy. What would you use to put a frontend on an app similiar to dd such that it is user freindly but doesn't have much of a learning curve?

12:50<test>hmm I was thinking about doing a periodic reload. i guess then I'd have to come up with a way to query the progress. I could catch a signal and print to stdout, but it's starting to feel like a really kludgy solution. I'm considering QT or some other graphics library, but I'm afraid I'll spend a day or two just coming up to speed on the API...

12:53<shiznatix>Hello. I have been trying in vain for a while now to get the proprietary ATI drivers to install but have only managed to mess things up. I have tried to do it via the wiki but that just gave me fglrx errors when starting x so I removed all those packages and tried to just run the installer that i downloaded from the ATI website. this worked until x froze and i had to do a hard reboot which then gave me the same errors. Now I am stuck
12:53<shiznatix>with a very strange font problem where my font is really small and hard to read but everything else is there even through the ati proprietary drivers are not working. How can I just remove everything that I have done and try from the beginning?

16:11<themill>!kernel abi
16:11<dpkg>Debian kernel packages have an <ABI> to indicate when out-of-tree modules must be rebuilt; upgrading from a package with 2.6.26-1-686 to another 2.6.26-1-686 doesn't require fglrx/nvidia/etc to be rebuilt, but upgrading from 2.6.26-1-686 to 2.6.26-2-686 does. Development kernels have the ABI "trunk" to indicate the ABI is unmanaged and you probably need to rebuild out-of-tree modules every time you upgrade the kernel package.

So I've compiled my own version of Linux 2.6.30 using "the Debian way" (ie., creating a .deb package) and installed it. So far, it seems to be running fine, except for the fact that I can't run the exploit :/ Indeed, I would need to resolve the adress of the "init_cred" symbol, but there is no such
21:52<cyril> symbol in /proc/kallsyms. I am wondering if I did something wrong when compiling, or if it is perfectly normal not to have that symbol in Debian, which seems a little bit weird to me.

22:52<psych787>2) Create a ChRoot that uses unionfs so you can effectively redo your root.
22:52<ml|>edbian: /msg dpkg lenny->squezee
22:53<psych787>The latter will let you experiment with your real system in a safe, sandboxed manner. However, it will take some technical expertise to accomplish, and not quite everything will work (ex. some KDE4 device management stuff fails in a chroot).
22:54<ml|>and yes some of use testing :)
22:55<ml|>edbian: the only way to revert would be from a backup, but not using apt
22:56<psych787>Sufficent messing with apt's preferences file and judicious use of aptitude will allow reversion of mass package pinning or outright dist-upgrade. I have used that to recover things on several occasions.
22:56<psych787>However, doing so requires extreme dilligence and expertise. A sufficiently damaging operation can take days to sort out.
22:57<ml|>you can always try, but apt is not designed for that
22:57<psych787>Aptitude is different than apt.
22:57<ml|>apt = aptitude, apt-get
22:58<psych787>Aptitude can recommend solutions to dependency problems. While sifting out which are valid for your purposes, and making your preferences clear can be challenging, it is doable.
22:58<ml|>dpkg: apt
22:58<dpkg>[APT] Advanced Packaging Tool, a package management system used by Debian and its derivatives. There is no apt program per se; APT is a C++ library of functions that are used by several command line programs for dealing with packages, notably apt-get, apt-cache, and aptitude. See also <aptitude> <apt-get>, <apt-cache>,
22:59<psych787>It should be noted that unlike Synaptic, aptitude can actually navigate downgrade paths.
23:00<psych787>If I remember correctly, one of the best ways to accomplish a downgrade is to set a preference for a lower distribution, and then dist-"upgrade".
23:00<ml|>dpkg: downgrade
23:00<dpkg>methinks downgrade is not possible with apt-get currently. No future support is anticipated. Some programs change the binary format of their files in a way that cannot be rolled back later, and package maintainer scripts provide ways to upgrade to new config file formats but not ways to downgrade. You can always try to downgrade a package using dpkg -i <olderversion.deb>. See also <partial downgrade>, <unstable->testing>, <sdo>.
23:00<sney>any downgrading is not officially supported
23:00<psych787>I didn't say apt-get. I said aptitude. And while its not officially supported, it IS possible.

23:09<psych787>A few days. After I tested a similar downgrade in a VM successfully, I used it as my safety net when upgrading from stable to unstable/experimental KDE4 stuff.
