03:57<vss>hi. I have an IBM xserver which has an qlogic iscsi adapter installed. I know that qla4xxx and qla3xxx start to fight with eachother and one of those modules need to be disabled. How can one accomplish that? adding "blacklist qla3xxx" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist does not help. using "alias qla3xxx off" does not do the trick either. any ides?
03:58<vss>i am using latest debian stable (5.0.4 amd64)
03:59<ffws>vss: did you try blacklist and alias off at the same time?
03:59<dpkg>In lenny, etch and squeeze, create/edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf and add a line similar to this (without quotes): "blacklist module_name". If this doesn't work, do 'echo "install modulename /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf'. IMPORTANT: ask about <blacklist-initramfs>. To blacklist a module at installation time, ask me about <installer blacklist>.
04:00<jm_>use the install .... /bin/true method
04:03<vss>ffws : no, not at the same time.
04:03<vss>jm_: bin/true is an godawful hack to be honest
04:04<vss>SUSe has a nicer solution: a kernel option named brokenmodules. eg brokenmodules=qla3xxx would do the trick
04:04<ffws>vss: for example blacklist ipv6 does only work here if I do both
04:04<jm_>vss: funny how it always works

05:19<themill>!kernel abi
05:19<dpkg>Debian kernel packages have an <ABI> to indicate when out-of-tree modules must be rebuilt; upgrading from a package with 2.6.26-1-686 to another 2.6.26-1-686 doesn't require fglrx/nvidia/etc to be rebuilt, but upgrading from 2.6.26-1-686 to 2.6.26-2-686 does. Development kernels have the ABI "trunk" to indicate the ABI is unmanaged and you probably need to rebuild out-of-tree modules every time you upgrade the kernel package.

To make sure it's read by a login shell, put "source ~/.bashrc" at the end of ~/.bash_profile, or just remove the comment that is placed before the already typed include line that Debian's ~/.bash_profile has by default. 12:29<psych787>Often, I find a makefile fails to look in the folder debian put the relevant *.h file.
12:30<psych787>Worst case, you may have to examine the make file, and create a symlink to satisfy it.
12:30<xente>that's the bug
12:30<sney>or just add an -I statement
12:30<xente>to what?
12:30<psych787>I find symlinks are better, as the makefile might require a lot of changes to get it right.
12:30<sney>CFLAGS, I think.
12:31<psych787>Plus, by using a symlink you're expanding your own environment to better match other people's.

18:58<boolean>i'm having a problem with my monitor.. the nvidia tells xorg that the monitor is bigger than it really is and causes the image to stretch beyond the monitor edges. Currently I fix this by editing my xorg.conf to include Option "UseEDID" "false", then restarting my kdm with alt+e. I now get a 460x480px display or something. Then I edit my xorg.conf again, but this time I comment out the UseEDID line. When I restart kdm now, the display is ok
18:58<boolean> until i X is started later
18:59<boolean>i also added a modeline, but xorg seems to ignore it

22:16<lantizia>Hey i've got a server with 2 identical hard disks... but no onboard raid or a raid card... can somehow do a software based raid as debian is installing?
22:17-!-streuner [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:17<adb>!software raid
22:17<dpkg>software raid is probably commonly used to describe RAID facilities in the Linux kernel. This means that you can RAID with any disks, with no need for a "special" (read winmodem) hardware controller. See also section of the <ig>. For SATA disks, ask me about <sata raid>.
