00:42<jordanm>edbian: you can interpret sudo as "do this as root"
00:43<edbian>I learned it didn't work cause sudo only lasts for 1 command and the pipe creates 2

08:02<axius>hello, i've got a fresh install of debian squeeze (using the netinst img) and i've got a nasty flicker (I have an onboard Intel video card), in /etc/X11 there is no xorg.conf and from what i've read it's normal. I've found something about KMS and that I should disable frame buffers, some forums tell me it's being done automaticaly ... while others point me in the kernel rebuild direction. I need a few hints pls:)

21:55<edbian>Is testing less stable than stable?
21:56<edbian>Like, significantly less stable??
21:57<mcr>ml|, hmm. okay. not much of an aptitude user, usually use apt-get.
21:57<mcr>I found the aptitude UI very confusing...
21:57<jpinx-eeepc>edbian: yes
21:58<jpinx-eeepc>edbian: if you have to ask that - stick with stable and backports ;)
21:58<dr|z3d>mcr: if you run aptitude without arguments, you'll get a curses iface. You want to use it in much the same way you use apt-get.
21:58<dr|z3d>so aptitude install <package> or aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade etc.
21:59<ml|>!why aptitude
21:59<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>).
21:59<edbian>jpinx-eeepc, I'm not afraid of instability. I'm just curious. This isn't a serious work machine right now. Where in time is testing? Stable seems to be about 2 years ago now.

22:01<edbian>jpinx-eeepc, How often is the testing repos updated?
22:01<jpinx-eeepc>edbian: stable is not that old
22:01<dpkg>Lenny is the codename for the current stable release, Debian GNU/Linux 5.0, released on 2009-02-14: Ask me about <release notes>, <install debian>, <etch->lenny>, <installer firmware>. Currently <5.0.4>.
22:02<dpkg>Shiny New Shit Syndrome is a serious disorder, which usually breaks out into an epidemic every time something new is released. If you have SNS, ask me about <backports> and <ssb>; these are better options than upgrading to <testing> because it is a <moving target>.
22:02<dpkg>hmm... backport is a package from a newer Debian branch, compiled from source for an older branch to avoid dependency and ABI complications. (2.7.4 and 2.7.10), . Ask me about <> and <backport caveat>. See also <simple sid backport>.
22:02<dpkg>First: See if the package has already been backported. Ask me about <backports>. If it hasn't, 1) Add ONLY a "deb-src ..." line for sid to your sources.list. 2) apt-get update 3) apt-get install build-essential; apt-get build-dep packagename;apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. If you are just wanting to change the compilation options, ask me about <package recompile>, or see <uupdate> if sid is too old
